When Playboy first started not all that playmates were actually 18 years of or older, to be exact some models during the beginning of the magazine actually posed when they were 17 years old. The average age of the playmate today is around 22 years old, but they can really come at any age. When Playboy first started there was never an official prize for the most popular playmate shown whether it would be for the month or the year. There was once a playmate that posed for the German Playboy who was actually 16 years old, she then again posed when she was 18. A few notable playmates have surfaced during the years of Playboy's history. For example Stephanie Adams was an author and gay rights advocate and officer during the November 1992 edition. During March 1987 Marina Baker was a journalist and a children's book author based out of England. During July 1998 Lisa Dergan was also doubling as the Hooters spokesperson and model. Jayne Mansfield from the February 1955 edition was a scene to remember. Actress during December 1997 Karen McDougal was a fitness model that appeared as a cheerleader in commercials during 2000. During the Playboy playmate history there was actually a few actresses that posed such as Martha Smith during July 1973, and Stella Stevens during January 1960. Marilyn Monroe was probably the most recognized playmate ever to be in Playboy's history, in the beginning they called her sweetheart of the month not playmate of the month. The actual first playmate of the month was Margie Harrison she was Miss January during 1954 which was the second issue of Playboy ever released. Under current law the age required bits are very strict and could result in court penalties today. But during the beginning stages of Playboy there has been so many different ages that they had begun with that some models were as young as 16 years old. Even though Playboy has had some problems with the courts in the past for showing underage models, today they are a very reputable company that distributes thousands of magazines a month all around the world in different languages.
