Ribeye of the Sky: Sandhill Cranes in West Texas | S5E10 | MeatEater
Steve and bird hunting aficionado Ronny Boehme join up with wildlife biologist Ed Arnett in Lubbock, Texas to hunt Sandhill cranes. The Sandhill crane offers a unique wingshooting opportunity and also carries the nickname “rib eye of the sky” because of its supposed similarities to a handsome cut of beef. It’s fast action and plenty of laughs as Steve, Ronny, and Ed explore the culinary delights of these birds with a Texas style “Crane Cookout.”

Sandhill Crane Vocalizations
Sandhill Cranes make a variety of calls, from purrs to hisses to bugles, with variations that require the context of what the cranes are doing to understand. For example, purrs are used in calling young, prior to flight or mating, or when the crane is nervous. Unison calls or guard calls are sometimes used to let other cranes know this is the pair's territory or prior to or during flight flight, as well as in other circumstances. Vocalizations are complex and not fully understood. Enjoy these purrs and unison calls.

Lyrics:
1) Back Then
my old highway exit looks so much different
but the water tower still looks the same
what if the town runs dry and no one else needs us
another power outage in the rain
I didn’t tell anyone I was coming home and I stayed for 3 months
spent the summer in South Carolina doing what I want
clouds as tall as mountains, it was humid as can be
Carolina sun was burning up everything
(everything)
2) Sidelines
I was on the field on a Friday night
3rd string, had to swallow my pride
I got thrown in on a 4th and 5
just so they could take a knee
oh I was only thinking about my 6 string
I remember coach tryna break us down
2 a days had us passin out
this week we gotta play away
home team just came from state
lost by 6, that's the worst way
damn, bus ride back had a sour taste
had a revelation bout where I wanna be
I was drained of patience and my energy
just to find out I played the wrong game
I was thinking bout my 6 string
heatwave ain't ever takin breaks
we would find shade in the cemetery
drove a couple hours to the angel oak
heavy conversation with a little smoke
mama's cookin up corn meal grains
daddy's yellin at the football game
I was upstairs tryna make a name
I was upstairs with my 6 string
3) Sandhills:
white hot sand in my socks again
fire ants aimlessly biting in
saved again by calamine
another bite
this happens time to time
I’m spotted white
maybe it's just where I’m from
I had always had guard up
but hypocrites keep strollin in
and rubbin on my shoulder
white hot sand in my socks again
4) The View:
I found an arrowhead down by the creek
bulldozer stirred up the orange clay beneath
they put in a new high school that opens next week
they say it's got new technology that cannot compete
but I doubt it
I’m sure they'll find something to blame
I doubt it'll change
they put in a new garden store down by the church
after the service we go by some dirt
it went from a plastic bag back to the earth
I’d like to think I’m nothing different
but I doubt it
I’m sure I’ll find something to blame
I doubt it'll change
(ou)
5) Said Goodbye To Rock n Roll:
said goodbye to rock n roll
baby said it made me cold
but instead, i tell myself
that it’s all just for my health
but instead, i tell myself
that it’s all just for my health
spent a decade on the road
with a suitcase for a home
better rest up for the show
so say goodbye to rock n roll
better rest up for the show
so say goodbye to rock n roll

Okay, so its morning, and we’re out here in nature, because this feels more productive than hitting the snooze button for the 14th time.
As good citizens of the universe, let’s pay the obligatory critter tax. You know, tossing out peanuts and seeds to the local wildlife like we're royalty distributing alms for the poor.
But something feels off—my soul craves more, what about you? These animals? Not cutting it right?
Their necks aren’t long enough.
Their legs? Pathetically stubby.
And let’s not even get started on the lack of a long slender beak.
Then out of the ether, comes the sandhill cranes. And it’s like they’ve been meditating on a mountaintop and have come down with some deep wisdom to drop…but they’re too cool to say it.
Just look at those knees! Look at them!
Now they start belting out these eerie, soulful calls…. it’s like some kind of cosmic karaoke… They’re totally in tune with the vibrations of the universe… (3 sec).
And while they’re chanting ancient mantras that would make a yogi weep…
I’m just gonna trying’ to make it through the day without losing my CAR KEYS.
These cranes? Total yogis. They’re all about that natural, organic, gluten-free, farm-to-beak diet. Living in the moment, not stressing about deadlines, or the fact that they forgot to unsubscribe from that free trial that’s now charging them $9.99 a month.
Now I understand why the yogis we’re always talking about spirit and nature…and now I see why Sand Hill Cranes are the poster child for spiritual retreats
Now, here's a thought—what if touching those knobby crane knees is like touching the feet of a guru?
Could it unlock the secrets of the universe? Do you want to try and see what happens?
Let’s be all zen… let’s believe in ourselves and reach out.
And for a brief moment, time has stopped.
I’m pretty sure we’re now experiencing Sandhill Samadhi—enlightenment via bird knee.
Actually ya know what? It’s probably not that at all… it’s probably just a weird effect of the expired yogurt I ate.
Then I open my eyes, and the crane is just staring at us like, "What are you doing you weirdo?”
But feeling spiritually charged after that pseudo-samadhi, let’s be like the Mother Teresa of the bird kingdom and offer some loving support in the form of nuts and seeds.
And then it happens—We feed momma crane, and she feeds Baby Beaky right in front of us. Now we’re part of some bizarre, sacred feeding triangle with modern-day pterodactyls. She could’ve gone full CRANEZILLA and hogged all the nuts, but no, she’s sharing like a saint.
Then things take an unusual turn when we toss a peanut to Crane Daddy,
The guy nearly gives himself whiplash trying to figure out what to do with it.
Meanwhile, Baby Beaky decides to get cozy with us, then gets a bit confused and starts nibbling on my shorts. I look up at Momma Crane, and she’s like, “Yep, that’s my kid.”
And just like that, I’m not so sure cranes are all that enlightened.
Regardless, cranes have the whole life balance thing down, and they don’t even need yoga pants or green smoothies to do it.
And there’s something to be said for connecting to nature in a spiritual way. As the saying goes, “Wisdom says I am nothing. Love says I am everything. Between the two, my life flows”
That might sound like an enlightened yogi thing to say, but meanwhile I’m over here acting like the world is gonna end because I can’t find my phone…
Oh wait - it’s been in my hand the whole time. Have you ever done that?
So the next time you’re stressed about relationships…just remember this FACE.
And the next time you’re stressed about money…just remember this SOUND
The next time you’re stressed about health…just remember these KNEES.
Let’s be peaceful.
Let’s be graceful.
Let’s be like cranes!
