Man charged over fatal Barkly St, West Footscray hit-run

A MAN charged and remanded over a hit-run that killed a cyclist in West Footscray yesterday afternoon has appeared in court.

Matthew Terrance O’Connor, 27, appeared briefly at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with seven offences.

They include culpable driving causing death.

O’Connor, of Heidelberg, did not apply for bail and was remanded to reappear in court on Tuesday.

The cyclist killed has been named as New Zealand national Peter McGuffie, aged 54.

The driver allegedly struck the rider from behind with his white Holden Rodeo utility as he travelled east on Barkly St about 3.15pm yesterday.

The ute then smashed into a parked car, pushing it about 85m down the road.
