Operation Stirling Castle: The Battle for Crater District | July 1967
In June 1967, unrest broke out in the Crater District of Aden, a small town on the Southern end of the Arabian Peninsula (in modern-day Yemen). The breakdown of law and order in the District led to the British Army temporarily withdrawing from the area, until early July 1967, when the men of the 1st Battalion, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, moved back in and retook Crater under the codename of Operation Stirling Castle.
This video is dedicated to the memory of the 24 British soldiers who lost their lives in Crater District between June and August 1967.

Please also see part 2 (Gold Mohur beach, car ride around Aden). Footage taken in December 2005.
There is now a seperatist movement and many would like to see Aden as the capital of South Arabia rather than a part of Yemen.

Mad Mitch and his Tribal Law, The Aden Emergency
Lieutenant-Colonel Colin Campbell Mitchell (17 November 1925 – 20 July 1996) was a British Army officer and politician. He became famous in July 1967 when he led the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the British reoccupation of the Crater district of Aden. At that time, Aden was a British colony and the Crater district had been taken over by nationalist insurgents. Mitchell became widely known as “Mad Mitch”. His reoccupation of the Crater became known as "the Last Battle of the British Empire". Although some observers questioned whether the Last Battle was ever worth fighting, the event marked the end of an era in British history and made Mitchell famous.
