Originally aired on BBC2 in 1992, 'Operation Gladio' reveals 'Gladio', the secret state-sponsored terror network operating in Europe.
This BBC series is about a far-right secret army, operated by the CIA and MI6 through NATO, which killed hundreds of innocent Europeans and attempted to blame the deaths on Baader Meinhof, Red Brigades and other left wing groups. Known as 'stay-behinds' these armies were given access to military equipment which was supposed to be used for sabotage after a Soviet invasion. Instead it was used in massacres across mainland Europe as part of a CIA Strategy of Tension. Gladio killing sprees in Belgium and Italy were carried out for the purpose of frightening the national political classes into adopting U.S. policies.

In Italien und Deutschland sterben in den 60er bis 80er Jahren zahlreiche Menschen bei Bombenanschlägen. Indizien belegen bestimmte Zusammenhänge, die Spuren führen zu einer geheimen Struktur namens "Gladio". Ursprünglich als Spionage- und Sabotageorganisation im Falle eines sowjetischen Angriffs gegründet, diente Gladio politischen Interessen und wird nun verdächtigt, im Umfeld rechtsradikaler Gruppen Gewalttaten im Auftrag politischer Interessen begangen zu haben.
In den 60er bis 80er Jahren erschüttert eine Serie von Bombenanschlägen Italien. So sterben 1969 in Mailand 16 Menschen bei einem Bombenanschlag. Im August 1980 detoniert eine Bombe im Bahnhof Central in Bologna - 85 Menschen sterben. Im September des gleichen Jahres gibt es auch in Deutschland Bombenopfer. Beim schwersten Anschlag der bundesdeutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte sterben 13 Menschen auf dem Münchner Oktoberfest. Im Lauf der Jahre häufen sich die Indizien, dass diese Anschläge in einem bestimmten Zusammenhang stehen: Alle Täter kommen aus dem Umfeld rechtsradikaler Gruppen, mehrfach wird militärischer Sprengstoff benutzt.
Die Spuren führen zu einer geheimen Struktur, koordiniert von der NATO und den nationalen Geheimdiensten - ohne parlamentarische Kontrolle. Ihr Name: "Stay behind", später auch "Gladio". Sie geht auf eine US-Initiative für "verdeckte Operationen" von 1948 zurück. Geheime Waffendepots werden angelegt und Agenten ausgebildet. Im Falle eines sowjetischen Angriffs auf Westeuropa sollten sie sich überrollen lassen und hinterrücks Sabotageakte und Guerillaoperationen durchführen. Doch der sowjetische Angriff blieb aus. Was aus den geheimen Strukturen wurde, ist weitgehend unbekannt.
Spuren von Gladio finden sich in Italien. Es gibt Anzeichen dafür, dass die Strukturen seit den 60er Jahren benutzt wurden, Regierungen an der Macht zu halten. Trotz massiver Behinderung der italienischen Justiz durch Geheimdienste und Behörden gelingt es, die Existenz von Gladio nachzuweisen. 1990 räumt der damalige italienische Ministerpräsident Giulio Andreotti öffentlich ein, dass Gladio nicht nur in Italien, sondern europaweit existierte und existiert. Es wird umfassende Aufklärung gefordert - passiert ist wenig.
So auch in der Bundesrepublik. Obwohl es Hinweise auf einen möglichen Zusammenhang zwischen Gladio und dem Attentat auf das Münchner Oktoberfest von 1980 gibt. Die Ermittlungen werden eingestellt. Die Asservate, die dank neuer, kriminaltechnischer Methoden Hinweise geben könnten, sind mittlerweile vernichtet. Haben Rechtsextremisten Gladio-Strukturen auch in Deutschland benutzt, um ihre politischen Ziele zu verfolgen? Die Frage bleibt offen. Die Wahrheit über Gladio findet sich in den Archiven - unter Verschluss. Nur deren Öffnung könnte Klarheit bringen. Aber bis heute fehlt der politische Wille zur Aufklärung.
"Man musste Zivilisten angreifen, Männer, Frauen, Kinder, unschuldige Menschen, unbekannte Menschen, die weit weg vom politischen Spiel waren. Der Grund dafür war einfach. L'organizzazione Gladio era un'organizzazione paramilitare clandestina italiana di tipo stay-behind ("stare dietro", "stare in retroscena") promossa dalla NATO nell'ambito Operazione Gladio, organizzata dalla Central Intelligence Agency per contrastare una ipotetica invasione dell'Europa occidentale da parte dell'Unione Sovietica e dei paesi aderenti al Patto di Varsavia, attraverso atti di sabotaggio, guerra psicologica e guerriglia dietro le linee nemiche, con la collaborazione dei servizi segreti e di altre strutture.
Malgrado in Italia Gladio sia propriamente utilizzato in riferimento solo alla stay-behind italiana (o, secondo alcuni, la principale e più duratura tra diverse stay-behind che operarono in Italia), il termine è stato applicato dalla stampa anche ad altre operazioni di tipo stay-behind, in quanto parte dell'Operazione Gladio. Durante la guerra fredda, quasi tutti i paesi dell'Europa occidentale organizzarono reti stay-behind sotto controllo NATO.
L'esistenza di Gladio, sospettata fin dalle rivelazioni rese nel 1984 dall'ex membro del gruppo neofascista Ordine Nuovo Vincenzo Vinciguerra[2] durante il suo processo[3], fu riconosciuta dal presidente del Consiglio italiano Giulio Andreotti il 24 ottobre 1990, che parlò di una "struttura di informazione, risposta e salvaguardia".

Operation Gladio
Operation Gladio (Italian: Operazione Gladio) is the codename for a clandestine North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) "stay-behind" operation in Italy during the Cold War. Its purpose was to prepare for, and implement, armed resistance in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion and conquest. Although Gladio specifically refers to the Italian branch of the NATO stay-behind organizations, "Operation Gladio" is used as an informal name for all of them. The name Gladio is the Italian form of gladius, a type of Roman shortsword. Stay-behind operations were prepared in many NATO member countries, and some neutral countries.
The role of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Gladio and the extent of its activities during the Cold War era, and any relationship to terrorist attacks perpetrated in Italy during the "Years of Lead" (late 1960s to early 1980s) is the subject of debate. Switzerland and Belgium have had parliamentary inquiries into the matter.

Valley of the Wolves (TV series)
Kurtlar Vadisi (The Valley of the Wolves) was a Turkish television drama which broadcast mainly on Show TV and then transferred to Kanal D, then atv for its last season. It was mostly about an agent named Polat Alemdar who leaked into the mafia (becoming the partner of the mafia gunman Süleyman Çakır) after his plastic surgery. The scenario has direct and indirect references to the Turkish politics and political history from a viewpoint of an undercover agent. Kurtlar Vadisi became one of the most successful TV programmes in Turkey (ratings reached to %40) and produced a successful feature film named Valley of the Wolves: Iraq, Valley of the Wolves: Gladio and Valley of the Wolves: Palestine.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO /ˈneɪtoʊ/; French: Organisation du traité de l'Atlantique Nord; OTAN), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's headquarters are located in Haren, Brussels, Belgium, where the Supreme Allied Commander also resides. Belgium is one of the 28 member states across North America and Europe, the newest of which, Albania and Croatia, joined in April 2009. An additional 22 countries participate in NATO's Partnership for Peace program, with 15 other countries involved in institutionalized dialogue programmes. The combined military spending of all NATO members constitutes over 70 percent of the global total. Members' defense spending is supposed to amount to 2 percent of GDP.

Necati Şaşmaz
Muhammed Necati Şaşmaz (born 15 December 1971) is a Turkish actor, best known for playing the lead role of Polat Alemdar in the popular television series Kurtlar Vadisi (Valley of the Wolves) and its movie spin-offs, including Kurtlar Vadisi Irak (Valley of the Wolves Iraq).
Necati Şaşmaz was born to a family of Zaza origin in Harput, Elazığ, Turkey, as the oldest son of Abdülkadir Şaşmaz. He studied Tourism and Hotel Management, both in Turkey and in Canada. He lived in the United States for six years before returning to Turkey for a visit to his parents. He had planned to return to the U.S. on 11 September 2001, but the September 11 attacks on that same day led him to cancel his flight and continue life in Turkey.
In Istanbul, Necati Şaşmaz met renowned Turkish director Osman Sınav, who offered him the leading role in the Valley of the Wolves. He played the fictional character Polat Alemdar in the series and in the movie. He currently plays in another spin-off of the original series titled Kurtlar Vadisi: Pusu (Valley of the Wolves: Ambush).

Gladio, II. Dünya Savaşı sonrasında Batı Avrupa'da gelecekte olması beklenen bir Varşova Paktı işgaline cephe gerisinde bir direniş başlatmak amacıyla İtalya'da NATO tarafından gizli olarak örgütlenen kontrgerilla (stay-behind) operasyonunun kod adı. Gladyo, özel olarak NATO cephe gerisi direniş organizasyonun İtalyan kolunu belirtse de bazen "Gladyo operasyonu" NATO'nun bütün cephe gerisi (stay-behind) operasyonlarının gayriresmî adı olarak kullanılır ve bazen "Süper NATO" adıyla da anılır.[1] Latince'de kılıç anlamına gelen Gladio sözcüğünü ad olarak kullanan örgüt, Amerikan ve İngiliz kontrgerilla örgütlenmesi olan Stay Behind tarafından 1952 yılında kuruldu. CIA tarafından yönetilen ve finanse edilen örgüt, 1956 yılında ABD ile işbirliği içinde, casusluk ve gerilla savaşı yapmak üzere örgütlendi. Sardunya'da örgütün ilk eğitim kampı kuruldu ve Kuzey İtalya'da 139 yerde silah ve mühimmat depoları oluşturuldu. Resmi adı Müttefik Koordinasyon Komitesi (Allied Coordination Committee) idi. 1956 sonrasında ikisi kadın 622 kişi ABD ve İngiliz gizli servisleri tarafından eğitildi. 1990 yılında Gladio'yu ortaya çıkaran soruşturmalar esnasında bu 622 kişinin grup liderleri oldukları, her bir grup liderinin belli sayıda kişiyi idare ettiği, böylece toplam sayının 15.000'e yaklaştığı ortaya çıktı. Soruşturmaların ünlü yargıcı Felice Casson, gizli servis arşivinde yaptığı incelemelerde, 1972 yılındaki bir bombalamanın kesinlikle NATO destekli bazı gizli örgütlerce yapıldığı sonucuna ulaştı. Yargıç, başbakan Andreotti'nin bilgisine başvurdu, 1972'de bu olay tespit edildiği için başbakan örgütün varlığını kabul etti, ancak 1972'de örgütün kapatıldığını söyledi. Ursprünglich als Spionage- und Sabotageorganisation im Falle eines sowjetischen Angriffs gegründet, diente Gladio politischen Interessen und wird nun verdächtigt, im Umfeld rechtsradikaler Gruppen Gewalttaten im Auftrag politischer Interessen begangen zu haben.
In den 60er bis 80er Jahren erschüttert eine Serie von Bombenanschlägen Italien. So sterben 1969 in Mailand 16 Menschen bei einem Bombenanschlag. Im August 1980 detoniert eine Bombe im Bahnhof Central in Bologna - 85 Menschen sterben. Im September des gleichen Jahres gibt es auch in Deutschland Bombenopfer. Beim schwersten Anschlag der bundesdeutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte sterben 13 Menschen auf dem Münchner Oktoberfest. Im Lauf der Jahre häufen sich die Indizien, dass diese Anschläge in einem bestimmten Zusammenhang stehen: Alle Täter kommen aus dem Umfeld rechtsradikaler Gruppen, mehrfach wird militärischer Sprengstoff benutzt.
Die Spuren führen zu einer geheimen Struktur, koordiniert von der NATO und den nationalen Geheimdiensten - ohne parlamentarische Kontrolle. Ihr Name: "Stay behind", später auch "Gladio". Sie geht auf eine US-Initiative für "verdeckte Operationen" von 1948 zurück. Geheime Waffendepots werden angelegt und Agenten ausgebildet. Im Falle eines sowjetischen Angriffs auf Westeuropa sollten sie sich überrollen lassen und hinterrücks Sabotageakte und Guerillaoperationen durchführen. Doch der sowjetische Angriff blieb aus. Was aus den geheimen Strukturen wurde, ist weitgehend unbekannt.

So auch in der Bundesrepublik. Obwohl es Hinweise auf einen möglichen Zusammenhang zwischen Gladio und dem Attentat auf das Münchner Oktoberfest von 1980 gibt. Die Ermittlungen werden eingestellt. Die Asservate, die dank neuer, kriminaltechnischer Methoden Hinweise geben könnten, sind mittlerweile vernichtet. Haben Rechtsextremisten Gladio-Strukturen auch in Deutschland benutzt, um ihre politischen Ziele zu verfolgen? Die Frage bleibt offen. Die Wahrheit über Gladio findet sich in den Archiven - unter Verschluss. Nur deren Öffnung könnte Klarheit bringen. Aber bis heute fehlt der politische Wille zur Aufklärung.

Malgrado in Italia Gladio sia propriamente utilizzato in riferimento solo alla stay-behind italiana (o, secondo alcuni, la principale e più duratura tra diverse stay-behind che operarono in Italia), il termine è stato applicato dalla stampa anche ad altre operazioni di tipo stay-behind, in quanto parte dell'Operazione Gladio. Durante la guerra fredda, quasi tutti i paesi dell'Europa occidentale organizzarono reti stay-behind sotto controllo NATO.

Gladio, II. Dünya Savaşı sonrasında Batı Avrupa'da gelecekte olması beklenen bir Varşova Paktı işgaline cephe gerisinde bir direniş başlatmak amacıyla İtalya'da NATO tarafından gizli olarak örgütlenen kontrgerilla (stay-behind) operasyonunun kod adı. Gladyo, özel olarak NATO cephe gerisi direniş organizasyonun İtalyan kolunu belirtse de bazen "Gladyo operasyonu" NATO'nun bütün cephe gerisi (stay-behind) operasyonlarının gayriresmî adı olarak kullanılır ve bazen "Süper NATO" adıyla da anılır.[1]
Latince'de kılıç anlamına gelen Gladio sözcüğünü ad olarak kullanan örgüt, Amerikan ve İngiliz kontrgerilla örgütlenmesi olan Stay Behind tarafından 1952 yılında kuruldu. CIA tarafından yönetilen ve finanse edilen örgüt, 1956 yılında ABD ile işbirliği içinde, casusluk ve gerilla savaşı yapmak üzere örgütlendi. Sardunya'da örgütün ilk eğitim kampı kuruldu ve Kuzey İtalya'da 139 yerde silah ve mühimmat depoları oluşturuldu. Resmi adı Müttefik Koordinasyon Komitesi (Allied Coordination Committee) idi.
1956 sonrasında ikisi kadın 622 kişi ABD ve İngiliz gizli servisleri tarafından eğitildi. 1990 yılında Gladio'yu ortaya çıkaran soruşturmalar esnasında bu 622 kişinin grup liderleri oldukları, her bir grup liderinin belli sayıda kişiyi idare ettiği, böylece toplam sayının 15.000'e yaklaştığı ortaya çıktı.
Soruşturmaların ünlü yargıcı Felice Casson, gizli servis arşivinde yaptığı incelemelerde, 1972 yılındaki bir bombalamanın kesinlikle NATO destekli bazı gizli örgütlerce yapıldığı sonucuna ulaştı. Yargıç, başbakan Andreotti'nin bilgisine başvurdu, 1972'de bu olay tespit edildiği için başbakan örgütün varlığını kabul etti, ancak 1972'de örgütün kapatıldığını söyledi. Araştırmalara devam edilince Gladio'nun faaliyete devam ettiği ortaya çıktı. Eylemlerin en büyüğüyse 1980 Ağustos ayında Bologna tren istasyonunda patlayan bomba ile 85 kişinin ölümü idi.
