Albert Ho

Albert Ho Chun-yan (Chinese: 何俊仁; Yale: Hòh Jeun Yàhn; Pinyin: Hé Jùnrén; born 1 December 1951) is a solicitor and politician in Hong Kong. He is the current chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China and former chairman of the Democratic Party from 2006 to 2012. He is a solicitor and a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong for District Council (Second) constituency.

In 2013, Ho grabbed international headlines after it was revealed that he had assisted Edward Snowden during the latter's stay in Hong Kong.

Early life and education

Ho was born in Hong Kong on 1 December 1951 in a big family with six children. His father worked in a shipping company by day and as a translator by night, along with two other jobs that he had. Ho earned his Bachelor of Laws with honors from the University of Hong Kong in 1974. He went on to obtain his postgraduate Certificate in Laws the following year.

During his college life, he developed his liberal ideals and actively involved in student politics and campaigned for Mak Hoi-wah who ran for the Hong Kong University Students' Union against the Maoist nationalists who dominated the student union in the 1970s.

Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km² and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.

After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

Chief executive officer

A chief executive officer (CEO in American English) or managing director (MD in British English) describes the position of the most senior corporate officer, executive, or administrator in charge of managing an organization. The CEO of a corporation or company typically reports to the board of directors and is charged with maximizing the value of the entity. Titles also often given to the holder of the CEO position include president and chief executive (CE).

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of an organization's CEO are set by the organization's board of directors or other authority, depending on the organization's legal structure. They can be far-reaching or quite limited and are typically enshrined in a formal delegation of authority.

Typically, the CEO/MD has responsibilities as a director, decision maker, leader, manager and executor. The communicator role can involve the press and the rest of the outside world, as well as the organization's management and employees; the decision-making role involves high-level decisions about policy and strategy. As a leader of the company, the CEO/MD advises the board of directors, motivates employees, and drives change within the organization. As a manager, the CEO/MD presides over the organization's day-to-day operations. The term refers to the person who takes all the decisions regarding the upliftment of the company, which includes all sectors and fields of the business like operations, marketing, business Development, finance, Human resources, etc. The CEO of a company is not necessarily the owner of the company.

Leung Chun-ying

Leung Chun-ying GBM, GBS, JP (born 12 August 1954), also known as CY Leung, is a Hong Kong politician who is the third and incumbent Chief Executive of Hong Kong. He assumed office on 1 July 2012. Prior to his tenure as Chief Executive, Leung held various political offices, including convenor of the Executive Council and member of the Provisional Legislative Council. As a relative unknown, Leung nearly failed to obtain enough votes to be nominated. However, he later won the Hong Kong Chief Executive election.

Early life

Leung Chun-ying was born in Queen Mary Hospital on 12 August 1954, to Leung Zung-Jan and Kong Sau-Zi. Leung's ancestral origin is Shandong, China. His father was a guard at Government House.

Leung earned a scholarship to study at King's College, where he was a classmate of Chinese democratic activist Lau San-Cing. After graduation, he attended Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1974, Leung undertook further studies in valuation and estate management at the Bristol Polytechnic and graduated in 1977 first in his class.
