An elderly woman suicide attempt at collectorate Deserted by husband, woman attempts suicide A woman attempted to commit suicide at the district collector's office alleging that her husband and his family members had cheated and deserted her after usurping her gold jewellery and money to the tune of 3 lakh given as part of dowry. She doused the kerosene she had brought with her and attempted to set herself on fire. However, police personnel stationed there prevented the woman from taking the extreme step and took her to the police station. The incident, which took place on Monday afternoon, created a flutter on the collectorate premises. The woman, identified as Anjalai Devi, a native of Avarangadu near Tiruppuvanam in Sivaganga district, in her petition wanted the collector's intervention to recover her money and valuables. She said that she approached police to trace her husband, but received little help from them. She had married one S Senthilpandi from Kathapatti in Madurai district around one-and-a-half years ago. During their marriage, Devi's parents gave 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery to Senthilpandi as dowry. She said he sold the jewellery and spent the money. He then started harassing her, demanding 3 lakh as dowry stating that he wanted to purchase a house. Devi's parents who came to know about it mobilized the money and gave it to Senthilpandi. Recently, Senthilpandi left Devi at her parents' house saying that he was looking for a house to buy and will call her once he finalises the purchase. However, when her wait extended endlessly, she came to Madurai to check on her husband. To her shock, she could not find him and his family in the village. Grandmother demands aid for orphaned grandchildren An elderly woman on Monday petitioned the Collector here, demanding aid for her two maternal grandchildren, whose father passed away due to alcoholism three years back and mother earlier this year due to illness. Of the two grandchildren, the girl R. Varshini (13) is studying Class 8 in an aided school while the boy R. Vignesh Kumar (3) has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. S. Panchavarnam, who works at a plastic-ware manufacturing company for a pittance, said that the boy could not walk and required someone to be around all the time. “Since my salary is the only source of income, I leave him at a relative’s house during daytime and go for work,” Ms. Panchavarnam said. She said that when she checked with some of the homes that take care of physically challenged children, they demanded at least Rs. 5,000 per month. “A few other homes demand that I give him up for adoption to them. I don’t want to do that,” she said. She said that her son-in-law was working in a TASMAC shop and died in 2013 due to overconsumption of alcohol. “My daughter had diabetes and died due to chicken pox earlier in January this year,” she said. She said that the children’s paternal grandparents had also passed away and a few of their relatives were not willing to help.
