On Aug. 2, 2016, the United States Air Force declared Initial Operational Capability for the F-35A Lightning II. F-35 Lightning II or Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is an aircraft project involving several nations, and which is still under development. Many country have joined the project and contributed both capital and technology.
The F-35A is the "normal" version: CTOL (Conventional Take-Off and Landing). It has an internal 25 mm gatlingkanon using boom and receptacle -lufttankning as a starting point. This version will be used by the US Air Force, the Canadian, Norwegian and many other air forces, including the Air Force, in the event that Denmark chose the Joint Strike Fighter.

US NAVY - F35A Ready for Combat Mission Worldwide
The US Air Force on Tuesday declared its first squadron of F-35As ready for battle. This is 15 years after Lockheed Martin won the contract to design and build the plane.
It is the most expensive weapons system ever built at a cost of $400 billion. The aircraft has significantly improved from the early days of the program; its stealth, electronic warfare and sensor fusion capabilities are urgently needed for future conflicts. It has the ability to penetrate defensive airspace and deliver precision munitions with sensor suites that fuses data from multiple information sources. It can also provide close-air support, air interdiction, and limited suppression and destruction of enemy air defense missions. Its stealth capability as well as the avionics capability allows the F35A to see the enemy and kill the enemy well before they even see it or know that it’s there.
The Air Force’s F-35A is one of three variants of the aircraft, designed to conduct conventional landings and take offs. The F-35B, used by the Marine Corps, is capable of short take-offs and vertical landings, and the Navy’s F-35C is built for use on aircraft carriers.
The Air Force now can send its first operational F-35 formation — the 34th Fighter Squadron located at Hill Air Force Base, Utah — into combat operations anywhere in the world. The service, which plans to buy 1,763 F-35As, is the single-largest customer of the joint strike fighter program, which also includes the US Marine Corps, US Navy and a host of governments worldwide.
The Air Force will operate the largest F-35 fleet in the world with more than 1,700 aircraft. General Hawk Carlisle, the commander of Air Combat Command, said "The F-35A will be the most dominant aircraft in our inventory, because it can go where our legacy aircraft cannot and provide the capabilities our commanders need on the modern battlefield.”

The F-35 does not need to be physically pointing at its target for weapons to be successful. Sensors can track and target a nearby aircraft from any orientation, provide the information to the pilot through their helmet (and therefore visible no matter which way the pilot is looking), and provide the seeker-head of a missile with sufficient information. Recent missile types provide a much greater ability to pursue a target regardless of the launch orientation, called "High Off-Boresight" capability. Sensors use combined radio frequency and infra red (SAIRST) to continually track nearby aircraft while the pilot's helmet-mounted display system (HMDS) displays and selects targets; the helmet system replaces the display-suite-mounted head-up display used in earlier fighters. Each helmet costs $400,000.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole fighters undergoing final development and testing by the United States. The fifth generation combat aircraft is designed to perform ground attack, aerial reconnaissance, and air defense missions. The F-35 has three main models: the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C carrier-based Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (CATOBAR) variant. On 31 July 2015, the first squadron was declared ready for deployment after intensive testing by the United States.
The F-35 is descended from the X-35, which was the winning design of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. It is being designed and built by an aerospace industry team led by Lockheed Martin. Other major F-35 industry partners include Northrop Grumman, Pratt & Whitney and BAE Systems. The F-35 took its first flight on 15 December 2006. The United States plans to buy 2,457 aircraft. The F-35 variants are intended to provide the bulk of the manned tactical airpower of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps over the coming decades. Deliveries of the F-35 for the U.S. military are scheduled to be completed in 2037.

US NAVY - F35A Ready for Combat Mission Worldwide
The US Air Force on Tuesday declared its first squadron of F-35As ready for battle. This is 15 years after Lockheed Martin won the contract to design and build the plane.
It is the most expensive weapons system ever built at a cost of $400 billion. The aircraft has significantly improved from the early days of the program; its stealth, electronic warfare and sensor fusion capabilities are urgently needed for future conflicts. It has the ability to penetrate defensive airspace and deliver precision munitions with sensor suites that fuses data from multiple information sources. It can also provide close-air support, air interdiction, and limited suppression and destruction of enemy air defense missions. Its stealth capability as well as the avionics capability allows the F35A to see the enemy and kill the enemy well before they even see it or know that it’s there.
The Air Force’s F-35A is one of three variants of the aircraft, designed to conduct conventional landings and take offs. The F-35B, used by the Marine Corps, is capable of short take-offs and vertical landings, and the Navy’s F-35C is built for use on aircraft carriers.
The Air Force now can send its first operational F-35 formation — the 34th Fighter Squadron located at Hill Air Force Base, Utah — into combat operations anywhere in the world. The service, which plans to buy 1,763 F-35As, is the single-largest customer of the joint strike fighter program, which also includes the US Marine Corps, US Navy and a host of governments worldwide.
The Air Force will operate the largest F-35 fleet in the world with more than 1,700 aircraft. General Hawk Carlisle, the commander of Air Combat Command, said "The F-35A will be the most dominant aircraft in our inventory, because it can go where our legacy aircraft cannot and provide the capabilities our commanders need on the modern battlefield.”

Recent missile types provide a much greater ability to pursue a target regardless of the launch orientation, called "High Off-Boresight" capability. Sensors use combined radio frequency and infra red (SAIRST) to continually track nearby aircraft while the pilot's helmet-mounted display system (HMDS) displays and selects targets; the helmet system replaces the display-suite-mounted head-up display used in earlier fighters. Each helmet costs $400,000.
