This song was written by Seán McBride in about 1955. Seán was a native of Cruit island which is in the Rosses area of Donegal (West Donegal). He was a school Teacher at St.Baithins school in the Carrigans/St.Johnston area (East Donegal) for most of his life. Seán passed away at the age of 90 in August 1996 and is buried on Cruit Island.
Seán only wrote the lyrics, the actual air itself is maybe 150 or more years old. There are many songs around using the same melody, but to my ears the closest one is a song called "The Faughan Side", This song was part of the Curriculum in national schools in East Donegal and as Seán was a Teacher in the "Laggan Valley" (South Inishowen) I'm pretty sure that is where he got his inspiration for the "Homes of Donegal".

Donegal
Donegal or Donegal Town (/ˈdʌniɡɔːl/ or /ˈdʌnᵻɡɔːl/ DUN-i-gawl; Irish: Dún na nGall, meaning "fort of the foreigners") is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. The name was historically written in English as Dunnagall or Dunagall.
Donegal gave its name to County Donegal, although Lifford is now the county town. Until the early 17th century, Donegal was the 'capital' of Tír Chonaill, a Gaelic kingdom controlled by the O'Donnell Clan of the Cenél Conaill. Donegal sits at the mouth of the River Eske and Donegal Bay, which is overshadowed by the Bluestack Mountains ('the Croaghs'). The town is bypassed by the N15 and N56 roads. The centre of the town, known as The Diamond, is a hub for music, poetic and cultural gatherings in the area.
History
There is archaeological evidence for settlements around the town dating to prehistoric times including the remains of round forts and other defensive earthworks.
St. Patrick was captured by raiders from the clans governed by Niall of the Nine Hostages, and this region is that to which Patrick returned, being familiar with the people, language, customs and lands. The first clan to convert to Christianity as the result of St Patrick's efforts was Clan Connaill (also known at one time as Clan Dálaigh: in English, this is pronounced Daley and it translates as "one in a leadership role"). Connall was a son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. As a result of their acceptance of Christianity, Patrick blessed the clan members; the sign of the cross appeared on the chieftain's shield and this became not only the heraldic device for the clan but also for County Donegal.

This song was written by Seán McBride in about 1955. Seán was a native of Cruit island which is in the Rosses area of Donegal (West Donegal). He was a school Teacher at St.Baithins school in the Carrigans/St.Johnston area (East Donegal) for most of his life. Seán passed away at the age of 90 in August 1996 and is buried on Cruit Island.
Seán only wrote the lyrics, the actual air itself is maybe 150 or more years old. There are many songs around using the same melody, but to my ears the closest one is a song called "The Faughan Side", This song was part of the Curriculum in national schools in East Donegal and as Seán was a Teacher in the "Laggan Valley" (South Inishowen) I'm pretty sure that is where he got his inspiration for the "Homes of Donegal".

With limited employment, the young men who grew up in this tiny corner of Ireland were destined for a life at sea. But it wasn't just about the money. Fishing was the common bond between communities. In places like Killybegs and Burtonport little else was talked about. RTÉ's Television Archive Unit looks at the lives of those affected by a litany of trawler disasters that hit the community hard in the mid-seventies and early eighties. This brand new documentary charts the extraordinary transformation of the Donegal team becoming champions in Croke Park this September, from their much talked about semi final defeat in 2011, to a formidable force that knocked out the legends of Gaelic football - Tyrone, Kerry, Cork and ultimately Mayo to become National heroes in 2012.
It had been 20 years since Donegal won the All Ireland and they seemed unlikely to ever reach an Ulster Final - until the enigmatic Jim McGuinness came along and changed all of that. The 22 month journey from zero to hero is recalled by Jim and his team, including his young captain, Michael Murphy - just 21 years old when he took up the position.

With limited employment, the young men who grew up in this tiny corner of Ireland were destined for a life at sea. But it wasn't just about the money. Fishing was the common bond between communities. In places like Killybegs and Burtonport little else was talked about.
RTÉ's Television Archive Unit looks at the lives of those affected by a litany of trawler disasters that hit the community hard in the mid-seventies and early eighties. It focuses on three trawler disasters in particular: the Evelyn Mari in 1975, the Carraig Una in 1976 and the Skifjord in 1981. Altogether sixteen lives lost at sea while trying to provide for their families.
