In 24 Hours, Internet Helped Change Life Of Detroit Man Who Walks 21 Miles To Work
That's what happened to James Robertson, a 56-year-old man from Detroit who walks 21 miles to and from work each day. The Detroit Free Press first covered the tale of Robertson's grueling commute, explaining that he leaves his home at 8 a.m. and does not return until around 4 a.m. Because Robertson can't afford to own and maintain a car in the Motor City on his $10.55-per-hour salary, he must rely on public transportation, rides from good samaritans and his own two feet to get him where he needs to go Monday through Friday.
Evan Leedy, a student at Detroit's Wayne State University, set up a GoFundMe account to help raise money to buy Roberts

Robertson has told the Detroit Free Press that his car broke down a decade ago and, making $10.55 an hour, he has been unable to save for a new one.

James Robertson of Detroit has walked 21 miles, five days a week, on his way to and from work. Now, thanks to a college student and donors on the internet, he's got plenty of money to buy a car, but as it turns out, that won't be necessary either.
On top of walking every day, Robertson hasn't missed a day of work in 12 years.
Once in a while he gets a ride from Blake Pollock, who shares the same route at Robertson. Otherwise, the 56-year-old man leaves his home at 8 a.m. and walks a couple miles to catch a northbound bus on Woodward Avenue to Troy's Somerset Collection.
From there, he walks another six miles to work his 2-10 shift at Schai

SENIORS STORY
Everyones favorite high school sweethearts Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez—played by
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens—still front the troupe.
Im very excited for High School Musical 3 to be on the big screen, says Efron. This
is what weve been waiting for, what weve been working towards, and it feels great because
I feel like we earned it. Were just regular kids that made High School Musical and now its
progressing.
Efron has grown up with his character. Troy is a lot of different things, he says. Hes a
very average kid going through high school, dealing with everyday choices. But the fun thing
about him is that hes got these hidden talents. So Troys got a lot to balance: his basketball
career, his newfound love of singing, and then of course, Gabriella. Whatll happen to them
after high school? You dont know. Its like typical high school drama that we get to sing
about.
According to writer Peter Barsocchini, the Troy Bolton character was inspired by the great
Pittsburgh Steelers football player Lynn Swan. Barsocchini went to high school with Swan;
they played on the same basketball team. One day we were riding on a bus to a game and he
said You know, Id really like to try ballet, says Barsocchini. Theres the character. Theres
so much pressure on kids to be cool that its tough to do something different.
Adds co-producer Don Schain, One of the big lessons from the first movie is to break
stereotypes. The power forward wants to be a pastry chef. The star basketball player wants to
be a thespian. The message to children is that you can be whatever you want to be.
Troy Bolton has always planned to go to the local university with his best friend Chad,
explains Borden. Now, because of his relationship with Gabriella and his relationship with
the stage, he has some choices to make....
Nurturing an impressive body of work that encompasses film and
television, ZAC EFRON (Troy Bolton) is positioning himself as
one of Hollywoods most promising talents as his career continues
to evolve. Efron received the coveted Teen Choice Award for Choice
Male Hottie in 2007 and the MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough
Performance for his role in Hairspray.
Efron recently wrapped production on the Richard Linklater film
Me and Orson Welles, an adapation of the period coming-of-age
novel by Robert Kaplow. He portrays a high school student who
happens upon the yet-to-open Mercury Theatre and is then noticed
by Orson Welles. Efron stars in the film alongside Ben Chapin and Claire Danes.
He stars in the upcoming film 17 Again, a Big-like dramedy in which a 36-year-old in
need of a major life do-over wakes up in the body of a high school senior. The film also stars
Matthew Perry and Leslie Mann.
In summer 2007, Efron starred alongside an all-star cast in the box office smash
Hairspray, which is about what happens when an all-white American Bandstand style TV
show gets a soul infusion. The film won the Critics Choice award for Best Ensemble and the
cast was also nominated for a Golden Globe® and SAG Award®.
Efron became the break-out star of the Emmy Award®-winning Disney Channel phenomenon High School Musical. He reprised his role in High School Musical 2, which
broke cable TV records, garnering 18.6 million viewers.
His other television credits include a recurring role on the WB series Summerland, and
guest-starring roles on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, ER, The Guardian and C.S.I. Miami.
Additionally, Efron starred on stage in the musical Gypsy and has appeared in
productions of Peter Pan, Mame, Little Shop of Horrors and The Music Man. A BlackTree Media Production Thank you for watching! James Robertson's work day starts with a stroll through his Detroit neighborhood to a bus stop on Woodward.
Then on to the Detroit Department of Transportation transit center, to a bus stop at Somerset Mall. From there he walks several miles to work to SME Schain Mold in Rochester Hills.
"I can't imagine not working," he said.
The trip home involves even more walking, because there aren't as many buses running at night.
James figures he walks about 20 miles a day, Monday through Friday.
"It doesn't set in until about Wednesday night or Thursday morning," James said. "It takes a pretty good toll on you."
This has been James' routine for the past five or six years since his car died.
A chance meeting with Blake Pollock is starting to change all that.
"I've noticed James walking up and down Crooks Road quite a bit for months," Pollock said.
Then one day about a year ago, the banker reached out to the factory worker.
"I was like, 'Aren't you the guy I always see walking up and down Crooks Road,'" Pollock said. "I said, 'Maybe one day I'll give you a ride.'
"I guess I met him, but not really."
A short time, later Blake saw James on a snow bank.
"This guy, in a black Cadillac, came up to me and asked if I wanted a ride," James said. "I was like, 'Why not.' That was the start of it all."
They have been riding together off and on, ever since. But those days may soon be over.
Since reporter Bill Laitner of the Detroit Free Press told their story last week, a reader started a fundraising campaign.
As of 7 p.m. the online account was at $87,000.
James has been overwhelmed.
"Somebody shows you love, you accept it," he said. "There's been a lot of love."
Blake said James has also gotten offers of a free car which could be a mixed blessing for their friendship.
"I guess I don't have a friend anymore," Blake said. "Maybe I don't want him to get a car."
But this friendship seems more likely to evolve - than dissolve.
FOX 2: "If you get a car are you going to pick Blake up for work?"
"I just might," James said.
James was not at work Monday due to the winter storm, but his perfect attendance record is intact - because most Schain employees have a snow day.

James Robertson's astounding 21 miles Everyday walk to work
Leaving home in Detroit at 8 a.m., James Robertson doesn't look like an endurance athlete. Pudgy of form, shod in heavy work boots, Robertson trudges almost haltingly as he starts another workday. But as he steps out into the cold, Robertson, 56, is steeled for an Olympic-sized commute. Getting to and from his factory job 23 miles away in Rochester Hills, he'll take a bus partway there and partway home. And he'll also walk an astounding 21 miles.
Five days a week. Monday through Friday.
It's the life Robertson has led for the last decade, ever since his 1988 Honda Accord quit on him. Every trip is an ordeal of mental and physical toughness for this soft-spoken man with a perfect attendance record at work. And every day is a tribute to how much he cares about his job, his boss and his coworkers. Robertson's daunting walks and bus rides, in all kinds of weather, also reflect the challenges some metro Detroiters face in getting to work in a region of limited bus service, and where car ownership is priced beyond the reach of many.
But you won't hear Robertson complain — nor his boss.
James Robertson walks toward Woodward Ave. in Detroit to catch his morning bus to Somerset Collection in Troy before walking to his job at Schain Mold & Engineering in Rochester Hills on Thursday January 29, 2015. James walks 21 miles daily round trip to his job.Robertson's roundtrip commute requires a bus ride each direction as well as nearly 21-miles of walking consuming 22 hours of his day before beginning again throughout the work week. The sheer time and effort of getting to work has ruled Robertson's life for more than a decade, ever since his car broke down. He didn't replace it because, he haven't had a chance to save for it. His job pays $10.55 an hour, well above Michigan's minimum wage of $8.15 an hour but not enough for him to buy, maintain and insure a car in Detroit.
As hard as Robertson's morning commute is, the trip home is even harder. At the end of his 2-10 p.m. shift as an injection molder at Schain Mold's squeaky-clean factory just south of M-59, and when his coworkers are climbing into their cars, Robertson sets off, on foot — in the dark — for the 23-mile trip to his home off Woodward near Holbrook. None of his coworkers lives anywhere near him, so catching a ride almost never happens.
Instead, he reverses the 7-mile walk he took earlier that day, a stretch between the factory and a bus stop behind Troy's Somerset Collection shopping mall. At Somerset, he catches the last SMART bus of the day, just before 1 a.m. He rides it into Detroit as far it goes, getting off at the State Fairgrounds on Woodward, just south of 8 Mile. By that time, the last inbound Woodward bus has left. So Robertson foots it the rest of the way — about 5 miles — in the cold or rain or the mild summer nights, to the home he shares with his girlfriend.
At the plant, coworkers feel odd seeing one of their team numbers always walking, says Charlie Hollis, 63, of Pontiac. Echoes the plant manager Wilson, "We are very much trying to get James a vehicle." But Robertson has a routine now, and he seems to like it, his coworkers say. Robertson has simple words for why he is what he is, and does what he does. He speaks with pride of his parents, including his father's military service.
This goal would help James get a nice vehicle along with a few months of insurance payments.

Evan Leedy, a student at Detroit's Wayne State University, set up a GoFundMe account to help raise money to buy Robertson a car. It began with a simple goal of $5,000 and skyrocketed to over $200,000 from thousands of people after Robertson's story was picked up my media outlets around the world.
"I am just so stunned," Robertson told People magazine Tuesday. "Who would have thought that just a simple walk would have turned into this? I would have told you that you were crazy a few days ago ... I am taking this as a sign that it's time I start driving again," he said. "And getting more than two hours of sleep a night."
Robertson's girlfriend, Tanya Fox, echoed a similar shock.
“He’s kind of a private person, doesn’t bother anybody. He’s the kind of person you can depend on. He’s a good man," she told the "Today" show about the response to Robertson's story. "We’re both elated and he’s overwhelmed. He didn’t think something like this would even happen to him.”
His work ethic and spirit are truly inspiring. Robertson doesn't complain and he manages to have perfect attendance at work.
"I set our attendance standard by this man," Todd Wilson, the plant manager at Schain Mold & Engineering, told the Detroit Free Press. "I say, if this man can get here, walking all those miles through snow and rain, well I'll tell you, I have people in Pontiac 10 minutes away and they say they can't get here — bull!"
"I do it with no excuses," Robertson told CBS News. "If you want something, you've gotta go out and get it ... You better go ahead and do it because your girlfriend don't want to hear it, your coworkers don't want to hear it and you got to get up and do it again the next day."
While the sum collected via GoFundMe can afford Robertson a luxury vehicle, he plans to keep it simple. He told the Detroit Free Press Tuesday that he likes Ford.
"I'm a Ford fan. I remember the Taurus," he said. "They look comfortable, nothing fancy. They're simple on the outside, strong on the inside — like me."

Detroit Man That Walked 21 Miles To Work Receives A New Car
A Detroit factory worker who has walked more than 20 miles (32 km) during his daily commute to work for a decade was surprised on Friday with a brand new car, donated by a suburban car dealership.
The unexpected gift is the latest in an outpouring of donations from supporters across the globe who, touched by James Robertson's plight, have raised more than $310,000 to help him buy a car.
Robertson has told the Detroit Free Press that his car broke down a decade ago and, making $10.55 an hour, he has been unable to save for a new one.
"I don't like it, I love it," said Robertson, 56, who appeared baffled as he sat behind the wheel of his 2015 red Ford Taurus. "If only my parents could see me now."
Robertson thought he was going to look at cars to purchase with Evan Leedy and Blake Pollock, who both helped coordinate the gift, worth an estimated $37,000.
Instead Robertson was greeted by reporters and a team of supporters who first learned of his marathon commute this week in a story that ran in the Sunday Detroit Free Press.
The story has since been widely shared on social media, and Robertson has been featured on national network news programs. The publicity has prompted a renewed discussion about reforming Metro Detroit's troubled public transportation system.
Leedy, 19, a student at Wayne State University, launched an online GoFundMe.com fundraiser after he read about Robertson's daily trek between his home in Detroit and the Schain Mold & Engineering factory in the suburb of Rochester Hills.
He spent part of the week negotiating a reasonable insurance rate for Robertson, who has not driven in 10 years. Leedy told Reuters he was initially quoted a $15,000-a-year premium, a quote that illustrates Detroit's notoriously high insurance rates.
The Free Press was tipped off by Pollock, a banker who had befriended Robertson two years ago when he spotted the factory worker walking by his office on his way to work.
The newspaper said Robertson takes buses to work, but has to walk more than 20 miles round trip because buses do not cover the whole route. He starts his commute at 8 a.m. for his 2-10 p.m. shift, and does not get home until 4 a.m.

From there, he walks another six miles to work his 2-10 shift at Schain Mold & Engineering.
After work, it's a six-mile walk back to the collection center where he catches the last bus of the day just before 1 a.m. He takes that as far as he can into Detroit and then walks the last five miles home.
When Evan Leedy heard Robertson's story, he set up a GoFundMe account for the walker to raise enough money for a car. The initial goal was set at $5,000 but after just two days, there is more than a quarter-million dollars waiting for Robertson.
And, a local car dealership has offered to give him a car but with that kind of cash, Robertson could buy a new house, or 10 in Detroit.

From 9/11, 7/7, ISIS, to Pakistani Taliban, whenever muslims do something horrible on the world stage (or even when Muslim individuals just happen to take a stance on any particular issue that is at odds with the majority popular opinion among Muslims; ie Irshad Manji, Maajid Nawaz, Malala Yusofzai, the Shi'a, etc) there will be those voices from within the Muslim community that go full denial and deflection mode and claim that it wasn't muslims that did it at all but rather Israeli Jews because "No true Muslim could do this" (See 'No true Scotsmen' fallacy) or "Have a good opinion of your fellow Muslims" (I guess at the expense of everyone else?). I have heard this kind of bull shit from ulama/scholars even. I am very disgusted by this sheer stupidity and intellectual negligence of this, so I decided to write a satirical song and sing about it instead of cry :)
Adam Sandler I love you, I don't own the melody, and Jewish people please do have a happy Hanukkah, I mean zero disrespect to your religious traditions or holy days. Muslims, please, we have to do better than this and actually own our problems and freaks rather than try to dump them on to other communities. I know every muslim that is involved in the community to any degree has heard this shit. We have to do better.
LYRICS
Put on your yamaka, here comes hanukkah,
So much fun-aka, to celebrate hanukkah.
The ummah it is glorious but its has problems too
Social, economic, and of course there is the jews
So if you feel misrepresented in papers and on TV
Here's a list of people who are really Jewish
According to Muslim conspiracies:
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi he spins the dreidel,
He was saying mazal tov before he left the cradle
All the boys in ISIS they're saying shabat shalom,
They are as Israeli as Ariel Sharon
Al-Qaida they all are Jews,
They all are Zionists don't let bin Ladden fool you
Irshad Manji and Maajid Nawaz,
They both get all their bills paid for by the Mossad
Boko Haram all light the menorah,
Pakistani Taliban all head bang to the torah
Everyone knows the shia began with jews,
Their first imam was Benjamin Netenyahu
Malala Yusafzai just a puppet of the west,
And Israel owns the west so that makes her Zionist
So many Jews in masjids,
Hamza Yusuf isnt but Anjem Chaudry is
So put on your yamaka, here comes Hanukkah
So much fun-aka, its time to celebrate hanukkah
Tell your friend Osamaka to put down his kalashnakovaka
If you really really wannaka have a
Happy happy happy happy hanukkah.

High School Musical 3: Zac Efron & Corbin Bleu, Exclusive Interview!
High School Musical 3: Zac Efron & Corbin Bleu, Exclusive Interview!
Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique
Coleman return to the roles they created in the international smash hit High School Musical
and the record-breaking High School Musical 2, that catapulted them to the center of the
worldwide HSM phenomenon.
One of the untold stories of the High School Musical franchise is how talented the cast
really is, says Barsocchini. Yes, theyve all become teen idols. But theyre good young
actors. Our principal cast has molded those characters into something that kids love. Thats the
secret.
Ortega adds, The chemistry the kids have with each other elevates it and makes it
something more than just telling a fun story. They are the most generous lot you could ever
hope to work with. They really come to work with the right things on their minds.
11
Its like typical high school drama that we get to sing
about.
According to writer Peter Barsocchini, the Troy Bolton character was inspired by the great
Pittsburgh Steelers football player Lynn Swan. Barsocchini went to high school with Swan;
they played on the same basketball team.
Detroit man walks 21 miles to work and back each day
Detroit man walks 21 miles to work and back each day
James Robertson's work day starts with a stroll through his Detroit neighborhood to a bus stop on Woodward.

James Robertson's astounding 21 miles Everyday walk to work
James Robertson's astounding 21 miles Everyday walk to work
Leaving home in Detroit at 8 a.m., James Robertson doesn't look like an endurance athlete.

In 24 Hours, Internet Helped Change Life Of Detroit Man Who Walks 21 Miles To Work
In 24 Hours, Internet Helped Change Life Of Detroit Man Who Walks 21 Miles To Work
That's what happened to James Robertson, a 56-year-old man from Detroit who walks 21 miles to and from work each day.

Hardest working people: Walking 21 miles a day is Detroit man James Robertson's life
James Robertson of Detroit has walked 21 miles, five days a week, on his way to and from work.
Here's the link if you'd like to donate to Robertson's fund: http://bit.ly/16gj5VC

Man James Robertson's Who Walks 21 MILES To Work And Back Every Day Because He Can’t Afford A Car.
A Detroit factory worker who has walked more than 20 miles during his daily commute to work for a decade was surprised on Friday with a brand new car, donated by a suburban car dealership.
The unexpected gift is the latest in an outpouring of donations from supporters across the globe who, touched by James Robertson's plight, have raised more than $320,000 in an online campaign to help him buy a car.
Robertson had told the Detroit Free Press that his car broke down a decade ago and, making $10.55 an hour, he has been unable to save for a new one.'I don't like it, I love it,' said Robertson, who appeared baffled as he sat behind the wheel of his 2015 red Ford Taurus. 'If only my parents could see me now.'
Robertson thought he was going to look at cars to purchase with Evan Leedy and Blake Pollock, who both helped coordinate the gift, worth an estimated $37,000.Instead Robertson was greeted by reporters and a team of supporters who first learned of his marathon commute this week in a story that ran in the Sunday Detroit Free Press. The story has since been widely shared on social media, and Robertson has been featured on national network news programs. The publicity has prompted a renewed discussion about reforming Metro Detroit's troubled public transportation system.Leedy, a student at Wayne State University, launched an online GoFundMe.com fundraiser after he read about Robertson's daily trek between his home in Detroit and the Schain Mold & Engineering factory in the suburb of Rochester Hills.
