Thermal Simulation of Uncooled Prototype Bipropellant Rocket
This is a finite element simulation of heat transfer in the uncooled first prototype of a whisky/nitrous oxide bipropellant liquid rocket. The gas in the combustion chamber can reach temperatures up to 2000° Celsius, but thanks to the thick copper walls acting as a heatsink and the short firing duration the copper parts should never get hotter than 400° or so. Higher temperatures are seen around the throat region, but as the throat is made from graphite it can easily withstand this. This simulation is for the engine being fired at 55% of its highest nominal thrust, which is probably the lowest it can be throttled without danger of flow separation.- published: 15 Aug 2013
