Arianespace has successfully launched two satellites for operators in the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region: EchoStar XVIII for the operator DISH Network L.L.C and BRIsat for the Indonesian bank PT. Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk.
The fifth launch of the year for Arianespace, and the third in 2016 using an Ariane 5, took place on Wednesday, June 18 at 18:38 pm local time from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. This mission was the heavy-lift launcher’s 72nd consecutive success. It set a payload lift record to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) for the Ariane 5 ECA by lofting a total mass of 10,730 kg.
It was also the 230th launch of an Ariane rocket overall, and marked two other mile-stones, as Arianespace launched two SSL-built (Space Systems Loral) satellites for the first time on a single mission, and also orbited a spacecraft wholly dedicated to a finan-cial institution.

A European Ariane 5 rocket launched this evening at 20:30 UTC from the launch base in Kourou, French Guiana. The rocket carried the Australian Sky Muster satellite into orbit which will provide broadband to rural parts of Australia via it's 80-100 KA Band spot beams. ARSAT-2 was the second passenger for Argentina and has 16 Ku-band transponders and 4 C-band transponders for television broadcasting.

Another of Europe's super launch rocket, the Ariane 5, successfully lifted off from it's launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana today at 21:16 UTC, 18:16 Local time carrying the DirecTV-15 and Sky Mexico-1 satellites.
This was the 79th Ariane 5 to launch on mission VA-223, DirecTV-15 for the American DirecTV operator will be positioned at 103 degrees West and weighs 6,300kg. It will provide television to the United States, Canada, Alaska and Puerto Rico through it's 30 Ku-Band and 24 Ka-Band transponders. Sky Mexico-1 for Mexico will be positioned at 79 degrees West and weighs 1,250kg. It will provide television to Mexico, Central America and Caribbean through it's 24 Ku-Band and 2 R-Band transponders.

The launch of a rocket is the crowning moment, the culmination of a long process of careful machining and construction. What comes out of a rocket factory is a unique blend of power, scale and engineering skill.
"To give you an idea of scale, the thrust at lift-off of a rocket like Ariane is like the power of two units of a nuclear power station, and the turbo pump that feeds the rocket engine has the power of a TGV," says Michel Freuchet, Head of Launchers at Astrium, near Paris, where the Ariane 5 launcher was born.
Piece by piece, it is hewn from solid aluminium and brought to life. The central structure of Ariane 5 is made from huge sheets of top grade aluminium. Aluminium is used as it is best suited to withstand the extremely low temperatures of the liquid hydrogen and oxygen fuel. One by one, the panels are machined into shape - with many areas as thin as two millimeters thick. Over ninety percent of the aluminium is removed and recycled, leaving behind the purest and most perfect central part of each panel.
There are currently three main European launchers ready to rocket into space.
Ariane 5 is the biggest, capable of lifting 10 tonnes into orbit. Soyuz is the Russian workhorse with a three tonne payload, while Vega is the European Space Agency's new rocket, designed to take one and a half tonne satellites into low Earth orbit.
Faced with increased competition from the Far East and private companies in the US, the European Space Agency is currently treating Ariane to a make-over. The Ariane 5ME, or Midlife Evolution, will be able to combine the launch of communication satellites and scientific missions.
Looking ahead a decade, some of the new technology in Ariane 5ME will be included in its successor Ariane 6. The European Space Agency sees the evolution as a strategic move to meet the demands of both commercial and science customers.

Ariane 5 is, as a part of Ariane rocket family, an expendable launch system used to deliver payloads into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) or low Earth orbit (LEO). Ariane 5 rockets are manufactured under the authority of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). Astrium, an EADS company, is the prime contractor for the vehicles, leading a consortium of sub-contractors. Ariane 5 is operated and marketed by Arianespace as part of the Ariane programme. Astrium builds the rockets in Europe and Arianespace launches them from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana.
Ariane 5 succeeded Ariane 4, but was not derived from it directly. Ariane 5 has been refined since the first launch in successive versions, "G", "G+", "GS", "ECA", and most recently, "ES". ESA originally designed Ariane 5 to launch the manned mini shuttle Hermes, and thus intended it to be "human rated" from the beginning.
Two satellites can be mounted using a SYLDA carrier (SYstème de Lancement Double Ariane). Three main satellites are possible depending on size using SPELTRA (Structure Porteuse Externe Lancement TRiple Ariane). Up to eight secondary payloads, usually small experiment packages or minisatellites, can be carried with an ASAP (Ariane Structure for Auxiliary Payloads) platform.

A European Ariane 5 rocket launched this evening at 20:30 UTC from the launch base in Kourou, French Guiana. The rocket carried the Australian Sky Muster satellite into orbit which will provide broadband to rural parts of Australia via it's 80-100 KA Band spot beams. ARSAT-2 was the second passenger for Argentina and has 16 Ku-band transponders and 4 C-band transponders for television broadcasting. -

Ariane 5 is the biggest, capable of lifting 10 tonnes into orbit. Soyuz is the Russian workhorse with a three tonne payload, while Vega is the European Space Agency's new rocket, designed to take one and a half tonne satellites into low Earth orbit.
Faced with increased competition from the Far East and private companies in the US, the European Space Agency is currently treating Ariane to a make-over. The Ariane 5ME, or Midlife Evolution, will be able to combine the launch of communication satellites and scientific missions.
Looking ahead a decade, some of the new technology in Ariane 5ME will be included in its successor Ariane 6. The European Space Agency sees the evolution as a strategic move to meet the demands of both commercial and science customers.

Faced with increased competition from the Far East and private companies in the US, the European Space Agency is currently treating Ariane to a make-over. The Ariane 5ME, or Midlife Evolution, will be able to combine the launch of communication satellites and scientific missions.
Looking ahead a decade, some of the new technology in Ariane 5ME will be included in its successor Ariane 6. The European Space Agency sees the evolution as a strategic move to meet the demands of both commercial and science customers.
