Lucknow division is an administrative geographical unit of Uttar Pradesh state of India. Lucknow is the administrative headquarters of the division. As of 2005, the division consists of Lucknow, Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri, Raebareli, Sitapur, and Unnao.

It is the 2nd largest city in north, east and central India after Delhi. It is also the largest city in Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow has always been known as a multicultural city that flourished as a North Indian cultural and artistic hub and seat of Nawab power in the 18th and 19th centuries. It continues to be an important centre of government, education, commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, culture, tourism, music and poetry.
The city stands at an elevation of approximately 123 metres (404 ft) above sea level and covers an area of 2,528 square kilometres (976 sq mi). Bounded on the east by the Barabanki District, on the west by Unnao District, on the south by Raebareli and in the north by Sitapur and Hardoi, Lucknow sits on the northwestern shore of the Gomti River. Hindi is the main language of the city and Urdu is also widely spoken. Lucknow is the centre of Shia Islam in India with highest Shia Muslims population in India. It is accessible from every part of India by air, rail and road.
Lucknow railway station officials will have a new job besides operating trains and managing passenger rush—of counting dead rats or even just the tails. Under Centre's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Charbagh is one of the 50 railway stations of the Indian Railways to be made thoroughly clean and rodent-proof. Lucknow division of Northern Railways has floated a tender to outsource the job of shooing away rats from the station. The bids have come from four agencies and the one that quotes the minimum price will bag the one-year contract.
Popularly known as "Chhoti Line ka station" here in Lucknow, the Lucknow junction comes under the North-Eastern Railway (NER) division which has its headquarters at Gorakhpur. Besides Izzatnagar division near Bareilly, the Lucknow division runs some very important trains from this junction that connects distant towns of south India and eastern India. Places like Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Gorakhpur, Kathgodam, Howrah, Okha, etc are directly connected by express and superfast trains from this junction.
