Phil Silvers (May 11, 1911 – November 1, 1985) was an American entertainer and comedy actor, known as "The King of Chutzpah". He is best known for starring in The Phil Silvers Show, a 1950s sitcom set on a U.S. Army post in which he played Master Sergeant Ernest (Ernie) Bilko.
Born Philip Silver on Thursday, May 11, 1911, in Brooklyn, New York, in the working-class Brownsville section, he was the eighth and youngest child of Russian Jewish immigrants, Saul and Sarah (née Handler) Silver. His siblings were Lillian, Harry, Jack, Saul, Pearl, Michael, and Reuben Silver. His father, a sheet metal worker, helped build the early New York skyscrapers.
Silvers started entertaining at age 11, when he would sing in theaters when the projector broke down (a common occurrence in those days), to the point where he was allowed to keep attending the same movie theater free of charge, to sing through any future breakdowns. By age 13, he was working as a singer in the Gus Edwards Revue, and then worked in vaudeville and as a burlesque comic.

NOTE: Though it was tried as an experiment earlier, this is the show where it's permanently established that the panelists will be introduced before entering the set. This was supposedly done because of the letters received from women wanting to see the gowns worn by the female panelists. MYSTERY GUEST: Phil Silvers (film, theater and TV comic, best known for his role as Sergeant Bilko-- he's in his Bilko costume for this episode) PANEL: Dorothy Kilgallen, Fred Allen, Arlene Francis, Bennett Cerf
Stay tuned as Phil Silvers guest stars on The Beverly Hillbillies! I believe this is Phil's last appearance of the show, one of the few bright spots in what's considered to be a dismal season even among die-hard fans. Continuing in his con-man style perfected as Sgt. Bilko on The Phil Silvers Show, he cons the Clampetts into buying multiple Washington landmarks from him. You can't look at his performance as Shifty Shafer/Honest John and not see shades of Bilko there. In the end, in classic Silvers style, he becomes soft hearted, giving the Clampetts their money back. On a personal note, I truly wish Phil's performance had not been buried in such a dismal season. He was a wonderful actor, and I just wish he would have been afforded a guest spot before the show had went downhill. He sti...
Sit right back fer a spell as the Clampetts visit New York! Manhattan will never be the same after Clampett and company visit. Phil Silvers appears in a flashback scene, and Sammy Davis, Jr. makes a cameo as a police officer. This is the original night of broadcast episode, sans commercials. The last two seasons were rarely syndicated unedited, so this has not been shown in this form in decades. There is no copyright infringement intended. Constantly Being Stalled has flagged these as being copyrighted, but they're "graciously" allowing them to stay on here. It's mighty hard to infringe on something they refuse to release! When CBS/Paramount does the right thing and releases these unedited without any music replacements, I will happily remove these.
Dinah Shore salutes Broadway in this rare 1975 show with Ethel Merman, Phil Silvers, Jack Cassidy, Robert Morse, and Michele Lee.
