This exhibition is organized, and toured by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature (NCCIL). Garth Williams: Illustrator of the Century is by far the largest retrospective of the artist’s work ever assembled. Located in Abilene, Texas, the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature collaborates with award-winning artists to produce high-quality exhibitions of their artwork that are distinctive and appealing to museum visitors of all ages. In addition to this unique artistic partnership, following its debut at the NCCIL gallery, each exhibition travels to museums, public libraries, and galleries nationwide. Most everyone has fallen under the magnetic spell of the American illustrator Garth Williams (1912-1996) at one time or another: as childhood readers, as parents or grandparents, or as professionals concerned with young people and their books. Charlotte’s Web? The Little House on the Prairie? Bedtime for Frances? The Cricket in Times Square? Williams, who was born in New York City and raised in London, illustrated them all--and dozens more children’s classics in a career that spanned nearly 50 years and brought a new level of virtuosity and fun to American children’s books and their illustration. Garth Williams: Illustrator of the Century is by far the largest retrospective of the artist’s work ever assembled. Curated by Leonard S. Marcus, on display are ninety-four original illustrations in pen & ink, watercolor, gouache and carbon pencil from 28 of Williams’ most beloved books. The exhibition features original art from books such as Margaret Wise Brown’s iconic Mister Dog, Sailor Dog and Home for the Bunny; E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little; and Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” series. This exhibition also explores lesser-known facets of the artist’s career such as Williams’ journeyman efforts as a London portrait artist, a New Yorker cartoonist, and his occasional forays into advertising. Finished and preliminary drawings in this exhibition offer rare glimpses into Williams work. Following its debut at the NCCIL, this exhibition will tour nationwide.
