WAR AND ATROCITY : 1641 DEPOSITIONS [2] ● Prof. Jane Ohlmeyer
THE 1641 DEPOSITIONS PROJECT
Prof.
Jane Ohlmeyer,
Trinity College Dublin.
One of the most exciting initiatives that I have led is the 1641 Depositions project, a three year (2007-2010) inter-institutional and multi-disciplinary collaboration involving over 50 researchers. This project was delivered on time, within budget and over specification.
In all I helped to secure nearly €5M (from the IRCHSS, the
AHRC,
FP7 and
Trinity College) for the digitization, online publication and scholarly analysis of the 1641 Depositions, despite limited funding opportunities. The next phase of the 1641 Depositions project involves developing modules around the
1641 Rebellion for school children in
Northern Ireland.
The Department of
Foreign Affairs funded this initiative which is currently underway. In Febraury
2011 we will begin a major FP7 funded project, called CULTURA, which centres on the 1641 Depositions. CULTURA (CULTivating
Understanding and
Research through Adaptivity) is a three year project with a budget of €3.9M.
Computer scientists and historians from
Trinity are leading this and will work in partnership with
IBM (
Dublin and
Haifa) and Commetric (a
Bulgarian SME), together with scholars from
Sofia University, the
University of Padua and the
Technical University of Graz.
The 1641 Depositions are freely available on line at see
http://1641.tcd.ie/. An exhibition, entitled '
Ireland in
Turmoil' which features the Depositions and related material is on display in the
Long Room until April. For a virtual tour of the exhibition see http://www.tcd.ie/

TCD/. I brought IBM on board as our industrial partners and thanks to this the 1641 Depositions project has become a flagship technological initiative.
On
22 October 2010 President Mary McAleese opened the exhibition and launched the website, together with
Ian Paisley,
Lord Bannside. Prior to the opening the 9th
Lewis Glucksman Memorial Symposium focused on the 1641 Depositions, War and
Atrocity.
