M Scott Peck was born in New York City, the son of Elizabeth and David Warner Peck, an attorney and judge. Peck was raised a Protestant (his paternal grandmother was from a Jewish family, but Peck's father did not identify himself as a Jew). His parents sent him to the prestigious boarding school Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, when he was 13. In his book, The Road Less Traveled, he confides the story of his brief stay at Exeter, and admits that it was a most miserable time. Finally, at age 15, during the spring holiday of his third year, he came home and refused to return to the school, whereupon his parents sought psychiatric help for him and he was (much to his amusement in later life) diagnosed with depression and recommended for a month's stay in a psychiatric hospital (unless he chose to return to school). He graduated from Friends Seminary in 1954, after which he received a BA from Harvard in 1958, and an MD degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1963. He served in administrative posts in the government during his career as a psychiatrist. He also served in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. His Army assignments included stints as chief of psychology at the Army Medical Center in Okinawa, Japan, and assistant chief of psychiatry and neurology in the office of the surgeon general in Washington, D.C. He was the Medical Director of the New Milford Hospital Mental Health Clinic and a psychiatrist in private practice in New Milford, Connecticut. His first and best-known book,The Road Less Traveled, has sold more than ten million copies. (Source: Wikipedia)

According to M. Scott Peck, an evil person:
1. Is consistently self deceiving, with the intent of avoiding guilt and maintaining a self image of perfection
2. Deceives others as a consequence of their own self deception
3. Projects his or her evils and sins onto very specific targets while being apparently normal with everyone else.
4. Commonly hates with the pretense of love, for the purposes of self deception as much as deception of others
5. Abuses political & emotional power ("the imposition of one's will upon others by overt or covert coercion".)
6. Maintains a high level of respectability, and lies incessantly in order to do so
7. Is consistent in his or her sins. Evil persons are characterized not so much by the magnitude of their sins, but by their consistency of destructiveness.
8. Is unable to think from the viewpoint of their victim
9. Has a covert intolerance to criticism and other forms of narcissistic injury
10. Most evil people realize the evil deep within themselves but are unable to tolerate the pain of introspection or admit to themselves that they are evil. Thus, they constantly run away from their evil by putting themselves in a position of moral superiority and putting the focus of evil on others.
Evil is an extreme form of a character disorder.

Dave Schmelzer (born August 16, 1962) is an American author, playwright, and pastor in the Association of Vineyard Churches. He is best known for his non-fiction book, Not The Religious Type, Confessions of a Turncoat Atheist, which details his movement away from atheism and towards the Christian faith, and for founding the Blue Ocean Summit, which gathers ministers and lay leaders interested in addressing matters of faith to a secular world.
At 18, Schmelzer entered Stanford University as a devout atheist. His conversion experience, chronicled in Not Religious, led to a growing involvement with his on-campus ministry and ongoing confusion; without a religious background, Schmelzer had to reconcile his secular upbringing with matters of faith. This interest with addressing God to a secular and Western audience has been a fundamental theme of his pastoral and authorial work. (See Published Works below)
In the late 1990s, Schmelzer and his wife, Grace, moved to Boston to help found the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Cambridge Massachusetts, since renamed the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Greater Boston. At the time, Cambridge (and the Boston area) had a less than 2% of church attendees on any given Sunday. Their goal was to meaningfully the rate of Sunday church-goers in Cambridge, then 2%. Since the founding, the Boston Vineyard has grown to approximately 1,000 visitors on any given Sunday. The Boston Vineyard is the site for the annual Blue Ocean Summit.

My message today is titled Life is hard" and it's about how to live a great life despite the fact that life is difficult. One of my favourite books is titled "The Road Less Travelled" by M. Scott Peck. The first sentence in the book is: "Life is difficult." Now, if you pick up a book and the first thing it tells you is "life is difficult" you may just think "is this book going to get reassuring and encouraging after such a start? But, as Peck goes on to explain, once you accept that life is hard, it no longer becomes an issue that it's difficult. He says You see, there are two sides to this story. There is another side to this coin. On the one side of the coin is where you have the words "life is hard" inscribed, but if you turn that coin over you will five very small but powerful words... -

M Scott Peck was born in New York City, the son of Elizabeth and David Warner Peck, an attorney and judge. Peck was raised a Protestant (his paternal grandmother was from a Jewish family, but Peck's father did not identify himself as a Jew). His parents sent him to the prestigious boarding school Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, when he was 13. In his book, The Road Less Traveled, he confides the story of his brief stay at Exeter, and admits that it was a most miserable time. Finally, at age 15, during the spring holiday of his third year, he came home and refused to return to the school, whereupon his parents sought psychiatric help for him and he was (much to his amusement in later life) diagnosed with depression and recommended for a month's stay in a psychiatric hospital (unless he chose to return to school). He graduated from Friends Seminary in 1954, after which he received a BA from Harvard in 1958, and an MD degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1963. He served in administrative posts in the government during his career as a psychiatrist. He also served in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. His Army assignments included stints as chief of psychology at the Army Medical Center in Okinawa, Japan, and assistant chief of psychiatry and neurology in the office of the surgeon general in Washington, D.C. He was the Medical Director of the New Milford Hospital Mental Health Clinic and a psychiatrist in private practice in New Milford, Connecticut. My message today is titled Life is hard" and it's about how to live a great life despite the fact that life is difficult.
One of my favourite books is titled "The Road Less Travelled" by M. Scott Peck. The first sentence in the book is:
"Life is difficult."
Now, if you pick up a book and the first thing it tells you is "life is difficult" you may just think "is this book going to get reassuring and encouraging after such a start?
But, as Peck goes on to explain, once you accept that life is hard, it no longer becomes an issue that it's difficult. He says
You see, there are two sides to this story. There is another side to this coin. On the one side of the coin is where you have the words "life is hard" inscribed, but if you turn that coin over you will five very small but powerful words. They read:
"You can make it better"
"If life hands you lemons, make lemonade."
Accepting that life is hard comes with accepting that you have the responsibility to make it better. Not only do you have the responsibility to make it better, you have the ability and the power to make it better.
Whatever the case may be, this example illustrates one other important fact about teh fact that life is hard and taking responsibility. That is:
"You always have choices"
A lot of times you will actually find that the choices are not as hard as you thought they were. You may just have shut off your mind from seeing those choices and possibilities because you thought you had no choice. Once you become open to the idea that you are responsible for your life and that you have choices, you will find that you are no longer stuck just because life is hard.
At that point, life is still hard, but you have the final say. Your life becomes more meaningful and purposeful.

As an atheist, Dave Schmelzer never thought of himself as the religious type--and he still doesn't, even though he now believes in God and leads a large Boston church in the shadow of some of the nation's most impressive universities. Religion is usually about rules and codes, about "being good," about what will get you embraced and what will get you shunned. But God, according to Dave, is all about how you can become a closer friend with him, with others, and with yourself.
In the tradition of C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity and G. K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy comes this illuminating collection of thoughts on faith in a postmodern world. The choreographer David Hernandez and his dancers will perform 'For movement's sake' in Monty, on February 14th and 15th. Monty spoke with Hernandez about dance, music and his creation 'For movement's sake'.
David Hernandez can draw from years of experience as a choreographer and impressive artistic collaborations. He started dancing for the Trisha Brown Dance company, worked with Meg Stuart in the early years of Damaged Goods and co-choreographed with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The physical theatricality he developed with Damaged Goods and his approach of music and movement that led to a collaboration with Rosas give his movement research a very particular starting point.
In For movement's sake, Hernandez continues his research of pure movement and its relation with music. Baroque composer Buxtehude's music is combined with Hernandez' choreography for three dancers. The title For movement's sake refers to Merce Cunningham's declaration that dance lets itself be read. There is no other reason for movement than the actual, pure movement.
For movement's sake is a project that explores the line between when movement is considered abstract and when it starts to have meaning and context. Hernandez creates a unique language of movement, shifting between gesture and aesthetics, showcasing the ability to communicate. Hernandez exposes the ability for movement to communicate and exposes the fact that a human being dancing is difficult to be abstract.
Expect pure dance in a peculiar scenographic setting that shows the performers in a perpetual metamorphosis.
In short while being interested in beautiful writing of material and context in dialog with the music we want to weave a sort of non linear story for three physical characters. To create spectacle where there is both the sophistication of movement vocabulary and of image oriented storytelling which are rarely seen together.

He apprenticed with Trisha Brown Company in New York, then came to Europe with Meg Stuart to start the Damaged Goods company. He has also joined the vocal group Graindelavoix under the direction of Bjorn Smelzer. As a pedagogue he has taught at PARTS for more than 15 years. David has been making his own work for over 20 years in the form of installations, dance performances and events. Last season he created the succesfull productions Thirst and Unisono.

AA daily reflections suggest that spiritual growth is with God as I understand him. I am happy that Gandhi expressed God, to be truth and to be love. And spiritual is everything in the moment of now and being able to cope with reality. Truth, love, all in the moment of now and being able to cope. On my own, I only have one view, and through prayer and meditation and asking for help, I get a bigger picture and inclusion in the possibilities today. Truth and love, a philosophy, a spiritual connection to now, a belief, which feels right inside me. Simply progress day by day, learning, truth and love in the moment. There will also always be the opposite of truth and love in the moment and fifty shades of grey may make the difference to wisdom today...

Self-awareness, prayer and meditation, when we are in step seven frame of mind: new patterns, new feelings, leading to new thinking and new actions can lead into very open, honest and willing approaches to the world and reality as it is right now... Of course, there may be not only fifty shades of grey in between, there may be many versions and shades of grey today...
How am I feeling this morning? Emotionally: as I hear the crash of empty wine bottles in the background as the restaurants are emptying out for the waste disposal engineers, I feel happy to be throwing out my empty plastic bottles which contained mineral water. In other words, I'm happy to be sober today, it is early though and a bit of prayer and meditation around steps 1 to 3, and asking myself, am I likely to have an old behaviour day? The old ways, selfishness and self obsession caused by disease. Or am I more likely to have a step seven sort of day, new feelings, new attitudes and new behaviour? In the past, I was any shade of grey you wanted, today I am me, black and white, colour, three-dimensional, omnidirectional, finding out who I am simply moment by moment, today...
