Archaeological discovery causes experts to rethink Christian theory
(11 Apr 2014) LEADIN
The exact location where Jesus Christ was sentenced to death has remained a mystery for thousands of years.
Many Christians place the trial near Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City.
But - with the discovery of an ancient palace near Mount Zion - some experts are beginning to rethink long-held theories.
STORY LINE
When Israeli archaeologists began to excavate The Kishle prison in Jerusalem's Old City in 1999, they were unaware of what they were about to find.
Little did they know, the ground of this Ottoman-era jail hid the remains of Herod's palace - a Jewish monarch who ruled Jerusalem and the Holy Land two millennia ago.
Jerusalem's successive Turkish, British and Jordanian rulers stationed garrisons here at The Kishle before the Israeli conquest of Jerusale...

(5 Jul 2019) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus119888
It's quiet in the middle of the day on the streets of this residential neighborhood in New York City's borough of Queens — except for the steady stream of visitors coming in and out of one particular small converted house next to a cemetery.
The men and women, young and old, have made their way from around the city, the country and the world to this unassuming site, the burial place of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, to pay their respects to the leader of Judaism's Chabad-Lubavitch movement who died 25 years ago.
While visitors come year-round, the crowds grow tremendously around the anniversary of his passing, which according to the Hebrew calendar falls this year on July 6, with people sometimes waiting a few hours to spend even a couple of moments at his mausoleum, where they pray and leave notes.
Odela Shagalov traveled with her boyfriend from Los Angeles to get engaged at the gravesite.
"We've come to the rabbi to first of all thank him for all the brachos (Hebrew term for blessings) that he's helped facilitate for us from Hashem (Hebrew term for God). And then to request more blessings for our future marriage," Shagalov said.
A follower of Schneerson, Rabbi Avraham Berkowitz, called the mausoleum "a gathering of souls." A place Berkowitz describes as "a gathering of people who are coming to bear their most personal precious issues in their personal lives."
Schneerson led Chabad-Lubavitch for more than four decades as the seventh rebbe, or spiritual leader, following the death of his father-in-law, whom he is buried next to at the Montefiore Cemetery in Cambria Heights in eastern Queens. His wife's and mother-in-law's graves are a short distance away.
In those years, he was one of the most influential global leaders in Judaism, reinvigorating a small community that had been devastated by the Holocaust and pushing for all Jews to become more deeply connected to their faith and do more good in their everyday lives. He sent Chabad representatives to live all over the world.
The 25th anniversary of his passing has been widely noted, especially on Israeli social media, which is filled with tributes from politicians and commentators.
Fariba Balakame met Schneerson in the late 1980's after she arrived in the United Sates from Iran. This year, she brought her husband and daughter to visit the gravesite.
Balakame says she gets "emotional" with every visit.
Following Schneerson's death, a member of the community bought the home next to the cemetery, assuming it would become well visited, which it has been. Chabad-Lubavitch representatives estimate there are now about 400,000 visitors a year, with about 50,000 in the period surrounding the anniversary. The majority are Jewish, both Lubavitchers and not.
The facility is simple — the home's backyard and driveway were enclosed with a white corrugated metal roof and turned into a climate-controlled space where visitors can sit on benches and write notes. From there, they can walk outside to the rabbi's mausoleum, a small structure built out of gray stone walls surrounding two stone markers and a white stone pit where people can leave their notes for the rabbi. The notes are periodically collected and burned.
Around the time of the anniversary, white tents with fans and video screens are erected in the cemetery roadway next to the mausoleum, where men and women can wait their turn during busy times.

The Wise Men travel far to meet Jesus Christ and present Him with gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh. After their visit, Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt to protect Christ from the wicked King Herod, who wants to have Him killed.
Matthew 2:1-2, 11-15
1) Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2) Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
11) And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
12) And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
13) And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
14) When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15) And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

In the darkness of night, Jesus teaches Nicodemus about the necessity of every person being born again.
John 3: 1-36
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus , a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again , he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit , he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit .
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness .
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 ¶And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 ¶For God so loved the world , that he gave his only begotten Son , that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life .
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved .
18 ¶He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light , that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
22 ¶After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized .
23 ¶And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much
24 For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.
26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth,
27 John answered and said, A man can
28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth ; and no man receiveth his testimony.
33 He that hath received his testi mony hath set to his seal that God is true.
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35 The Father loveth the Son , and hath given all things into his hand.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Jerusalem's successive Turkish, British and Jordanian rulers stationed garrisons here at The Kishle before the Israeli conquest of Jerusalem in 1967.
One part of The Kishle is now a police station, where Israeli officers manage the volatile religious and ethnic brew that is now Jerusalem's Old City.
In another part of the jail, experts from Israel's Antiquities Authority found a surprise.
While excavating there in 1999, they uncovered the retaining walls of a palace which they say was built by Herod the Great.
Excavation at The Kishle ended in 2000, with the location remaining sealed.
Now, the Tower of David - an ancient fortress to whose compound the Kishle belongs - plans to open it to the public in June and eventually transform it into a visitor centre.
Amit Re'em is an archaeologist for Israel's Antiquities Authority and was part of the team that excavated The Kishle.
He vividly remembers the moment it became clear the massive structure at the bottom of the prison couldn't be anything else but the foundations of Herod's palace.
Israeli archaeologists found two parallel walls, a sophisticated sewage system, coins and ceramics dating back to that period.
The two retaining walls included rectangular-shaped cut blocks - or 'ashlar' stones as they're known - which correspond to a description given by Jewish historian Flavius Josephus.
Re'em is convinced only someone like Herod, could order the construction of such a structure.
"The archaeological remains that we found in the excavation points to that this ground is the actual palace of Herod the Great," he says.
"We have the retaining walls, it was a massive engineering project, and we see it in the excavation. We even found an enormous underground sewage that could only belong to the palace of Herod."
Herod the Great - who died in 4BC and was succeeded by his son Herod Antipas - was vilified in the New Testament as a bloodthirsty tyrant who massacred Bethlehem's male children to prevent the prophesised birth of Jesus.
Perhaps it was at this palace near the Old City's Mount Zion that the trial of Jesus occurred.
"Where exactly the sentence of Jesus took place there are two major candidates," says Re'em.
"First is the Antonia barracks fortress in the north-western corner of the Temple Mount and the other is the palace of Herod. Now, when we excavated the foundations of Herod's palace it made this description of the Bible more vivid."
The theory that the trial of Jesus took place in Herod's palace is also supported by some Christian historians
It's based on the idea that Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator who according to the Bible sentenced Jesus, lived inside the palace.
In Flavius Josephus' account, Roman procurators lived in King Herod's palace, meaning Pilate may have stayed there as well.
"After Herod's death, a few decades longer ahead, the Roman procurator, the Roman government sit probably, maybe, sat inside the palace," says Re'em.
