A leading Russian journalist whose murder shocked the nation has been given an emotional funeral befitting a national hero.
Vladislav Listyev, head of state-run television, was gunned down in what Russian police are calling a contract killing. His death has highlighted the growing power of organised crime.
Police today released identikit pictures of two men suspected of being involved in the murder but few expect those who ordered the killing to be found.
The whole nation has been plunged into grief at the murder of Vladislav Listyev.
Thousands of people queued since early morning to pay their last respects to a man who symbolised all their hopes for a better future. Members of the public, members of the government and the nation's journalists stood side by side in remembrance of their friend and colleague.
Not since the death of Andrei Sakharov have the Russian people
united to show their grief in such a public fashion. And many are
blaming the government for allowing the situation in the country to
get to a stage when contract killings are commonplace.

The country has started to be gripped by complete
lawlessness. And I repeat that until the structures of power have
been completely reorganised we will achieve nothing and the worst
thing is that we are turning away from democracy to dictatorship.

Thousands pay last respects to TV reformer Listyev
Thousands of mourners paid their last respects on Saturday (4/3)
to Vladislav Listyev, the television personality and executive
whose murder on Wednesday left the Russian nation in shock.
Huge crowds lined the streets around Vladislav Listyev's apartment
building and the church where a private memorial service was held.
More than 5,000 others filed to the Vagankovskoye cemetery, the
final resting place of many prominent cultural figures. The
38-year-old Listyev, shot to death outside his home, is presumed
to have been targeted by gangsters for his influential new role as
executive director of state-run Ostankino television, in which he
was mandated to reorganise the network's valuable advertising
revenues. Most of the mourners remembered him as the anchorman of
several popular current affairs and talk shows, a charismatic
journalist who championed reforms in groundbreaking shows in the
early days of perestroika.

All Russian television channels suspended broadcasting Thursday in
response to the murder of prominent journalist Vladislav Listyev.
Meanwhile, at the television center headquarters, as Russian
president Boris Yeltsin met with Ostankino officials and staff,
journalists and citizens outside protested Russia's seemingly
growing inability to fight crime. Several government officials
and journalists also reacted thursday morning calling the killing
an indication of the Yeltsin administration failure to control the
country. At a press conference, the journalists union called for a
boycott of government reporting until the crime situation is
brought under control. The State Duma speaker Ivan Rybkin
expressed condolences to both Listiev's family and his colleguages
of Ostankino TV, urging careful and completely legal investigation
of the murder.

Vladislav Listyev
Vladislav (Vlad) Nikolayevich Listyev (Russian: Владисла́в Никола́евич Листьев; May 10, 1956 – March 1, 1995) was a Russian journalist and head of the ORT TV Channel (now government-owned Channel One).
Career
Vlad Listyev was arguably the most popular journalist and TV anchor in Russia (he remains well remembered years after his death), and was a key force in bringing the voice of democracy to Russian television. Listyev first appeared on television as one of the hosts of a highly progressive and successful show Vzglyad (Glance or Outlook) in the late 1980s, a satirical program watched weekly by as many as 100 million people. The other anchors were Artyom Borovik, Evgeny Dodolev, Alexander Lyubimov, Alexander Politkovsky and Dmitry Zaharov.
He was also the first host of the Russian version of Wheel of Fortune, which became very popular. Following the success of Vzglyad, Listyev and his colleagues founded a TV company VID (Vzglyad i Drugiye—The View and the Others) that would produce programming for the First Channel of Central Television, the main TV channel in the Soviet Union (later called Ostankino and ORT). With VID, Listyev started a number of new TV projects —Pole Chudes ("A Field of Wonders", the Russian version of Wheel of Fortune), Ugadai melodiu ("Guess the melody", the Russian version of Name That Tune), Tema ("The Theme"), and Chas Pik ("The Rush Hour"). In 1995, Listyev moved from VID to ORT, where he was appointed director of the channel. One of Listyev's very first moves as director was to order a temporary stop to all advertising, in effect excluding all unauthorized middlemen out of the lucrative advertising business, and consolidating future ad sales in the hands of the channel.

A leading Russian journalist whose murder shocked the nation has been given an emotional funeral befitting a national hero.
Vladislav Listyev, head of state-run television, was gunned down in what Russian police are calling a contract killing. His death has highlighted the growing power of organised crime.
Police today released identikit pictures of two men suspected of being involved in the murder but few expect those who ordered the killing to be found.
The whole nation has been plunged into grief at the murder of Vladislav Listyev.
Thousands of people queued since early morning to pay their last respects to a man who symbolised all their hopes for a better future. Members of the public, members of the government and the nation's journalists stood side by side in remembrance of their friend and colleague.
Not since the death of Andrei Sakharov have the Russian people
united to show their grief in such a public fashion. And many are
blaming the government for allowing the situation in the country to
get to a stage when contract killings are commonplace.

lawlessness. And I repeat that until the structures of power have
been completely reorganised we will achieve nothing and the worst
thing is that we are turning away from democracy to dictatorship.

The college takes boys from age 12 to 18 and many are children of
serving policemen who hope to follow in their father's footsteps.

He took control of equal rights issues from the Irish appointee Padraig Flynn, who had run into a storm of criticism from women's groups for alleged sexism.
As if to underline the growing influence of Parliament over the previously all-powerful Commission, Danish Environment Commissioner Britt Bjerregaard was attacked by MEPs for reportedly belittling the assembly.
SOUNDBITE:
"Mrs. Bjerregaard says she has been misquoted. But she does not deny explicitly having said that this is not a real parliament. Could I ask the future president in office therefore to clarify two points. First: whether Mrs. Bjerregaard has meanwhile discovered that this is very much a real parliament. And secondly, whether Mrs. Bjerregaard accepts, just as every other member of the commission should accept, that under Article 144 of the treaty, the Commission is responsible before the European Parliament?."
