The Blitz (shortened from German Blitzkrieg, "lightning war") was the period of strategic bombing of the United Kingdom by Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
Between 7 September 1940 and 21 May 1941 there were big aerial raids (attacks in which more than 100 long tons (100 t) of high explosives were dropped) on 16 British cities. Over a period of 267 days (almost 37 weeks), London was attacked 71 times, Birmingham, Liverpool and Plymouth eight times, Bristol six, Glasgow five, Southampton four, Portsmouth and Hull three and a minimum of one large raid on eight other cities. This was a result of a rapid escalation starting on 24 August 1940, when night bombers aiming for RAF airfields, drifted off course and accidentally destroyed several London homes, killing civilians, combined with the UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill's retaliatory bombing of Berlin on the following night.
Archive footage and first-hand accounts provide an insight into the terror London faced on September 7, 1940 when the Nazis began the first of many attacks from the air.
The first episode in the series focuses on the outbreak of the Blitz in September 1940. The first bombs used against Blitz Street, a row of terraced houses specially built on a remote military base and subjected to a frightening range of large-scale bombs and incendiaries similar to those dropped by the Luftwaffe - are the SC50 (25kg of TNT), the most common bomb dropped on the first day of bombing in London, and the SC500 bombs, which contained 250kg of TNT. The programme features emotional eye witness testimonies, giving a fantastic insight into day-to-day life on the home front and the immense psychological damage caused by the bombardment. The amateur footage includes images of bombed-out landmarks such as the John Lewis department store - on Oxford Street. The 20 minute film was shot by the wartime mayor of Marylebone in west London, Alfred Coucher. The film was used as part of a US government propaganda film entitled "Why We Are At War"

'Bout the danger comin' your way
She'll tear you up at midnight
Killer on the loose get out of her way
Sex machine terrorizin' dream
Lock the door tonight
She's got it all she can walk through a wall
Better run for your life
And in the light of day
In hidin' she will stay
Watch out at midnight
Feel her shadow on your face
Midnite maniac: she's a killer at large
Midnite maniac: lock your door
Cause she can't be far
Did you hear it on the radio
