East Dulwich is a district of south London, England in the London Borough of Southwark. It forms the eastern part of Dulwich, with the Dulwich Wood area, Dulwich Village and West Dulwich to its south and west. The South London suburb dates back to the nineteenth century when the land was sold by Alleyn's College and redeveloped with the help of Sir Charles Barry.
It is a residential area which has undergone gentrification in recent years. There is a shopping area along Lordship Lane which, in addition to several independent shops, has a variety of restaurants, butcher, fishmonger and a greengrocer specialising in organic produce. On Fridays and Saturdays there is a small market on North Cross Road with antiques, crafts and specialist food stalls. Some of the pubs in the area have been converted to gastropubs. East Dulwich station is located on Grove Vale. It is not only further east than North Dulwich Station (on the same line) but also further north.

Dulwich (/ˈdʌlᵻtʃ/) is an area of south London, England. The settlement is mostly in the London Borough of Southwark, with parts in the London Borough of Lambeth. Dulwich, consists of East Dulwich, West Dulwich and Dulwich Village and lies in a valley between the neighbouring districts of Camberwell, Crystal Palace, Denmark Hill, Forest Hill, Gipsy Hill, Knights Hill, Herne Hill, Honor Oak, Peckham, Penge, Sydenham Hill, Tulse Hill and West Norwood. Dulwich was in Surrey until 1889, when the County of London was created. The modern western boundary with the neighbouring Borough of Lambeth, Croxted Road, derives its name from a very old pilgrim way, Croke (crooked) Street.. Dulwich is also known as the location of the Dulwich Picture Gallery and Dulwich College.
The first documented evidence of Dulwich is as a hamlet outside London in 967AD, granted by King Edgar to one of his thanes Earl Aelfheah. The name of Dulwich has been spelt in various ways, Dilwihs, Dylways, Dullag, and may come from two old English words, Dill, a white flower, and wihs, meaning a damp meadow, giving a meaning of "the meadow where dill grows".
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.

A quick trip up Lordship Lane in East Dulwich
A gray Sunday in the hamlet where I had my sons brought back the memories. East Dulwich, is of course, what Nunhead will become: No more electrical supply place, hardware store (DIY shop), stationery shop , locksmith or Nazi war memorabilia shop. Only poncy cafe's and estate agents. Some places were the same, though. The horrible builder's cafe where I spent hours eating eggs on toast with my sons is unchanged. Then again, it was only 10 years ago. Ah, well. Subscribe. And come see me at the Museum of Comedy in December. http://museumofcomedy.ticketsolve.com/shows/873540363/events

I headed down to the market in North Cross Road in East Dulwich on Saturday morning to hang out with my camcorder and see what shots I could grab. I had such a great time chatting with the local traders and their mates - everyone as so friendly and seemed to enjoy mugging for the camera. What was really distracting throughout was the wonderful smell of the hog roast you see at the start of the film. I couldn't wait to finish shooting and get some take-home boxes for lunch. And I can tell you - it was as yummy as it looked.... The soundtrack is "Hotcake Syrup" by Derek K. Miller from the Podsafe Music Network at http://music.podshow.com

It is also a large recreational and pedestrian precinct that is situated on western outskirts of the Sydney central business district. The locality extends northwards from Chinatown, along both sides of Cockle Bay to King Street Wharf on the east, and to the suburb of Pyrmont on the west. Cockle Bay is just one of the waterways that makes up Darling Harbour, which opens north into the much larger Port Jackson. The precinct and its immediate surroundings are administered independently of the...
