All works uploaded in this channel belong to their rightful owners and is only uploaded for educational purposes. --- 🎬 Film Credits: Title: The New Adventures of Pinocchio, 1960 Directed By: Tadahito Mochinaga Produced By: MOM Film Studio 🔎 Brief Overview The New Adventures of Pinocchio was the first ‘Animagic’ animation deal struck between the Amercan animators Arthur Rankin Jr and Jules Bass, and the Japanese animator Tadahito Mochinaga. It was conceived as a series of 25-minute adventures, although each was shot and originally broadcast in 5-minute episode. The series is rather obscure, not the least because it was often shown as an interior segment of other umbrella shows, both in America and its native Japan. As a result, it has often been confined to the shadows and footnotes of TV histories, despite its remarkable achievement (Clements & McCarthy, 2015). Animagic shares a similar technique with Pal’s Puppetoons. It involves the creation of three-dimensional puppets that are then moved and filmed frame by frame (Crump, 2017). It was marketed by the Rankin-Bass studio as “Animagic” as a way to introduced a specially-made form of puppet animation through their collaboration with a Japanese Animation studio. The fact that the animation was done in Japan makes their productions a unique cross-cultural phenomenon. While the stories and designs originated in America, the style of the animation is very much Japanese, in that the characters’ movements are expressed through a pantomime-like style with limited lip sync (Priebe, 2007). Animagic style was best seen and known throughout the world in the adaptation of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” (1964). 👤 About the Creator ‎Tadahito Mochinaga was a pioneering Japanese animator who also worked in China. His innovations include developing Japan’s first multiplane camera, establishing the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, and introducing stop-motion animation to japan. It was his work on the adaptation of “Little Black Sambo” that gave him international recognition. It won the Grand Prize in the Best films for Children category at the first Vancouver International Film Festival – which called the attention of Arthur J. Rankin to work on a number of U.S-Japanese co-productions with the American company Rankin-Bass (Sharp, 2011). Mochinaga continued his career balancing work in Japan and China, working in news film production for Beijing Central Television from 1967 to 1978, and lecturing at Beijing University from 1985 to 1986. He played a critical role in the establishment Hiroshima Animated Film Festival in 1985 and directed his final work “The Boy and the Little Raccoon” in 1992 (Sharp, 2011). 📝 Editor’s Notes The New Adventures of Pinocchio is featured here as the Exceptional Work of Japanese 'Animagic' Animation.
