Space/orbital debris/junk/waste is the collection of defunct man-made objects in space – old satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments from disintegration, erosion, and collisions – including those caused by debris itself.
As of July 2013, there are over 170 million debris smaller than 1 cm (0.4 in). From one to ten cm at ~670,000, larger debris at 29,000.As of 2009, 19,000 debris over 5 cm (2 in) are tracked. Below 2000 km debris are denser than meteoroids; mostly dust from solid rocket motors, surface erosion debris like paint flakes, and frozen coolant from RORSAT nuclear-powered satellites. They cause damage akin to sandblasting, especially to solar panels and optics like telescopes or star trackers that can not be covered with a ballistic Whipple shield (unless it is transparent).
For comparison, the International Space Station orbits in the 300–400 kilometres (190–250 mi) range and the 2009 satellite collision and 2007 antisat test occurred at 800 to 900 kilometres (500 to 560 mi). The ISS has Whipple shielding, however known debris with a collision chance over 1/10000 are avoided by maneuvering the spacecraft.

What happens to all the 'disposables' when we send up humans, satellites and monkeys up into to space? Turns out it usually goes into orbit in the lower atmosphere which is around 600 miles above ground. Henceforth Earth has its own un-majestic versions of rings as embodied by the gas giants. But as well all know what goes up, must come down; and when it comes down...it comes DOWN. Experts have estimated that there are 29,000 objects 10 cm or larger orbiting Earth. Only 7 percent are working satellites. The European Space Agency is looking at ways to mitigate the threat.

Almost 20,000 pieces of space debris are currently orbiting the Earth. This visualisation, created by Dr Stuart Grey, lecturer at University College London and part of the Space Geodesy and Navigation Laboratory, shows how the amount of space debris increased from 1957 to 2015, using data on the precise location of each piece of junk ( from https://www.space-track.org ). UPDATE: This event was caused by debris from a Chinese rocket. For more information, see our updated story at http://bnonews.com/news/index.php/news/id4969 A meteor or space debris has been seen breaking up in the sky all over the western part of the United States, with witnesses reporting a "ball of fire" over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and other states. There was no immediate confirmation on whether it was a meteor or space junk, though some experts said they believe it is space debris. (BNO NEWS)
Large pieces of space debris could potentially cause severe damage to the ISS. When a collision is possible, astronauts have special "Soyuz lifeboats" they can retreat to. The Expedition 30 crews sheltered in their respective Soyuz spacecraft today, 24th March 2012 at 06:38 UTC. As a piece of Cosmos satellite debris made it's closest approach to the station. After the debris successfully passed the station without incident the crews began procedures to enter back into the orbiting complex. This is the 3rd time in Station history a crew has had to shelter in their Soyuz spacecraft. Crews do this so they can undock from the station, if it is hit.
The story of space debris highlighting how the unintended consequences of intense spaceflight activity during the past 60 years has resulted in a growing population of debris objects that pose hazards to safe space navigation. In 2013, experts estimate that 29 000 objects larger than 10 cm are orbiting Earth. The video also highlights the current state of debris mitigation measures and presents several concepts for removing defunct satellites from economically vital orbits now being studied by space agencies and industry across Europe. Produced for the 6th European Conference on Space Debris, 22-25 April 2013.
Fact 1 - A massive piece of space debris is on a collision course with earth and due to hit November 13th, 2015. Currently, experts are baffled by what the piece of junk heading our way is, but its named WT1190F. (Rather apt when you remove the numbers - WTF). It will enter the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean at 06:19 GMT. Some of it will burn up as it speeds towards Earth but it's thought some parts will survive and could smash into the ground. Fact 2 - The oldest surviving piece of man-made space debris still in orbit is the Vanguard 1 satellite. Launched in 1958, it is expected to remain in orbit for for well over 200 years. Fact 3 - The upper-stage rocket for a GPS satellite launched in 1993, crashed back to earth on 12 January 2001, in the Saudi Arabian desert. Fact 4 - As ther...
Hey everyone! So I've actually got a very nostalgic backstory to go with this one :) I loved Super Mario Galaxy growing up; to this day it's still got to be one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time. Back in 2007 when Super Mario Galaxy came out, I wanted to see if there were piano renditions of the tracks from the game, and that was when I found the most amazing piano cover of Space Junk Galaxy. I listened to it on repeat, wondering how the girl who was playing it had been able to transcribe and play the piece so perfectly. Fast forward to nearly a decade later: After many remixes under my belt, I decided I wanted to make remixes of my favorite Super Mario Galaxy tracks, and then I reminded myself of that one piano cover of Space Junk Galaxy I'd seen so long ago. I decided t...

Another year, another Call of Duty! I'm taking a look at the Infinite Warfare beta for PS4, and for the first time ever, I'm showing the matches completely uncut so that I can properly show you everything there is to see in this beta. Is Infinite Warfare far out, or space junk? Strap in for the long haul! 3..2..1..mark! *Apologies also for the drop of sync right at the end. It's inexplicable, and I'm afraid this is the only source material I have. Please forgive me, and let me make it right in the next video. Thanks! Please let me know if you are enjoying this series, and please do let me know if there is another game you would like to watch me suck at, I mean play. I'm open to suggestions/requests! Asteroid that 'could end human life' is heading for Earth, scientists say Scientists have moved closer to being able to stop a huge asteroid colliding with the Earth and potentially wiping out human life Researchers at the University of Tennessee have discovered that blowing the space rock up could make the collision worse by causing several devastating impacts. Instead, small changes could be made to its surface to disrupt the forces keeping it together and cause it to break up in outer space. They were studying asteroid 1950 DA, which first became infamous in 2002 when astronomers estimated it had a one in 300 chance of hitting the planet on 16 March, 2880. However, the odds of a collision were later revised to a more reassuring one in 4,000. Also watch these interesting V...

(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) Space junk - thousands of debris objects are hurtling around the earth with the potential of crashing into one another. As we launch more satellites, the risk of a satellite colliding with another satellite or a piece of space junk increases, threatening those satellite services we depend on. John Henderson, remote sensing scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory reviews the many ways we use satellites, how space collisions happen, how much of a danger space collisions are, and what can be done to prevent space collisions. A small piece of Cosmos 2251 satellite debris safely passed by the International Space Station at 2:38a.m. EDT, Saturday March 24 allowing the six Expedition 30 crew members onboard the orbiting complex to exit their Soyuz spacecraft and resume normal activities. The crew sheltered in the two Soyuz spacecraft as a precaution, the third time in station history that a crew has had to shelter in place due to the possibility of a conjunction with orbital debris and the first since June 2011. NASA's Expedition 30 Commander Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin were in their Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft attached to the Poisk module on the space-facing side of the Zvezda service module, while cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA's Don Pettit and Andre Kuipers of the Eu...
Yeah
Drifting on the space-way
By the Betelgeuse Hotel
Mapping out constellations
Of the place I know so well
Sifting through the system
For the piece that knows my name
Endlessly I listen
In the master game
Welcome to my world
(Welcome to my world)
Welcome to my only world
(Welcome to my only world)
It is full of space junk
But your words are coming through
I'm riding on the space junk
And it's bringing me to you
Bringing me to you
Through the tenth dimension
To the certainties beyond
Dreamily in attention
And the sub-atomic bomb
Machine that spins within me
And the spirit that drives me on
Searching for an answer
Welcome to my world
(Welcome to my world)
Welcome to my only world
(Welcome to my only world)
My head is full of space junk
But your words are getting through
I'm riding on the space junk
And it's bringing me to you
Bringing me to you, yeah
It's bringing me to you, yeah, yeah oh
Sitting on the space junk
What am I to do?
I'm riding on the space junk
And it's bringing me to you
My head is full of space junk
But your words are getting through
I'm riding on the space junk
And it's bringing me to you
It's bringing me to you
It's bringing me to you
