Durante más de doscientos años una maldición parece haber caído sobre la aristocrática familia de los Baskerville. The plot is loosely based on the novel by Victor Hugo. Quasimodo, the hunchback bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris sees the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda at the Paris Festival of Fools and is fascinated by her. Esmeralda falls in love with the handsome Captain Phoebus, but also the unscrupulous Judge Frollo falls in love with the beauty. Frollo can kidnap Esmeralda by Quasimodo. But Captain Phoebus and the Royal Guard can liberate her. Quasimodo is captured, but Frollo escapes. On the next chance he kills Captain Phoebus, but Esmeralda is under suspicion. She is captured and she is about to be executed. Quasimodo frees and brings her into the church of Notre Dame. From now on the plot diverges from the novel in substance. In the novel, Esmeralda and Quasimodo die. In this silent movie version, where also Phoebus remains alive and gets happy with Esmeralda, only Quasimodo dies.

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce became synonymous with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson after appearing in 14 film versions of various stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Yet at the start, neither of them got top billing. Yet now, Rathbone’s look as the famous detective is the iconic look for him. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up this year’s series of films from 1939, commonly called the greatest year of cinema, with Sidney Lanfield’s 1939 version of the famous story.
We talk about the various versions of this story brought to the screen – from 1914 to 2016 – and contrast its popularity with what our sense is of the actual story from the book (a fairly lame way to commit a crime). We chat about Rathbone and Bruce and what they bring to the table, along with Richard Greene, Wendy Barrie, Lionel Atwill, John Carradine and Barlowe Borland. We discuss problems we have with the detective story and how that compares with what is provided by this film. We chat about the look of the film and how the production crew brought it to life, from costumes to sets, from casting to effects, from music (or lack thereof) to screenwriting. And we touch on the controversial last line and why it was so problematic when first released.
It’s a film that tells a mediocre detective story without much panache, but does at least introduce the world to Rathbone and Bruce as the iconic pair. Is it worth seeing? That’s up to you, but either way, make sure you tune in to our show!

Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes (/ˈʃɜːrlɒk ˈhoʊmz/) is a fictional character created by British author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A London-based "consulting detective" whose abilities border on the fantastic, Holmes is known for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to adopt almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science to solve difficult cases. The character first appeared in print in 1887, and was featured in four novels and 56 short stories by Conan Doyle, as well as later works by other authors. The first novel, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character's popularity grew with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891; additional short-story series and two novels (published in serial form) appeared from then to 1927. The events in the stories take place from about 1880 to 1914.
All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson. Two are narrated by Holmes himself ("The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" and "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane"), and two others are written in the third person ("The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and "His Last Bow"). In two stories ("The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" and "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott"), Holmes tells Watson the story from memory, with Watson narrating the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, include long passages of omniscient narrative of events unknown to either Holmes or Watson.

Natalia Dicenta Herrera (6 July 1962, Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish actress. She is the daughter of Spanish actors Lola Herrera and Daniel Dicenta.

Dicenta was born Natalia Dicenta Herrera in Madrid on 6 July 1962. She is the first child of Spanish actors Lola Herrera and Daniel Dicenta. Natalia also has a younger brother, named Daniel. Her parents married in 1960 and divorced in 1967. She has worked with her mother Lola in many occasions.

Esmeralda falls in love with the handsome Captain Phoebus, but also the unscrupulous Judge Frollo falls in love with the beauty. Frollo can kidnap Esmeralda by Quasimodo. But Captain Phoebus and the Royal Guard can liberate her. Quasimodo is captured, but Frollo escapes. On the next chance he kills Captain Phoebus, but Esmeralda is under suspicion. She is captured and she is about to be executed. Quasimodo frees and brings her into the church of Notre Dame. From now on the plot diverges from the novel in substance. In the novel, Esmeralda and Quasimodo die. In this silent movie version, where also Phoebus remains alive and gets happy with Esmeralda, only Quasimodo dies.
