Loom

A loom is a device used to weave cloth and tapestry. The basic purpose of any loom is to hold the warp threads under tension to facilitate the interweaving of the weft threads. The precise shape of the loom and its mechanics may vary, but the basic function is the same.

Etymology

The word "loom" is derived from the Old English "geloma" formed from ge-(perfective prefix) and loma, a root of unknown origin; this meant utensil or tool or machine of any kind. In 1404 it was used to mean a machine to enable weaving thread into cloth. By 1838 it had gained the meaning of a machine for interlacing thread.

Weaving

Weaving is done by intersecting the longitudinal threads, the warp, i.e. "that which is thrown across", with the transverse threads, the weft, i.e. "that which is woven".

The major components of the loom are the warp beam, heddles, harnesses or shafts (as few as two, four is common, sixteen not unheard of), shuttle, reed and takeup roll. In the loom, yarn processing includes shedding, picking, battening and taking-up operations. These are the principal motions.

Loom (band)

Loom (often styled as LOOM) is an English rock band formed in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 2012 and based in London. The band consists of vocalist Tarik Badwan, lead guitarist Joshua Fitzgerald, rhythm guitarist Matt Marsh, bassist Harry Badwan (Tarik's brother), and drummer Samuel Lister. Harry Badwan and Lister joined the band in 2015.

Tarik Badwan has been called "the angriest man to stalk a stage in ages and the owner of the best death stare [sic: in] London." He is commonly noted as to having a malevolent stage presence: staring, jumping into the crowd, and other confrontational mischief.

History

Loom released their first single on 3 December 2012, a three-track cassette-only single through the label Heart/throb, including the tracks "Bleed on Me", "Lizard", and a cover of the Misfits' "She". The cassette sold out in hours.

On 25 March 2013 the band released a 7" single "I Get A Taste" with a B-side cover of the Zombies' "She's Not There". Later that year they released a limited edition cassette of only 200 copies containing five covers of songs that have influenced them, including Bad Brains, Warsaw / Joy Division, the Pixies, GG Allin, and the Jesus Lizard's "Seasick".

Emerald

Emerald is a gemstone and a variety of the mineral beryl (Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆) colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Beryl has a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale. Most emeralds are highly included, so their toughness (resistance to breakage) is classified as generally poor. It is a cyclosilicate.

Etymology

The word "Emerald" is derived (via Old French: Esmeraude and Middle English: Emeraude), from Vulgar Latin: Esmaralda/Esmaraldus, a variant of Latin Smaragdus, which originated in Greek: σμάραγδος (smaragdos; "green gem").

Properties determining value

Emeralds, like all colored gemstones, are graded using four basic parameters–the four Cs of Connoisseurship: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat weight. Before the 20th century, jewelers used the term water, as in "a gem of the finest water", to express the combination of two qualities: color and clarity. Normally, in the grading of colored gemstones, color is by far the most important criterion. However, in the grading of emeralds, clarity is considered a close second. Both are necessary conditions. A fine emerald must possess not only a pure verdant green hue as described below, but also a high degree of transparency to be considered a top gem.

USS Emerald (PYc-1)

The third USS Emerald (PYC-1), was a yacht built in 1922 as Savitar by the Consolidated Shipbuilding Company in Morris Heights, New York. She was acquired by the US Navy on 25 October 1940 and commissioned 27 December 1940, with Lieutenant (junior grade) Robert W. Graham in command.

After calling at Norfolk, Virginia Emerald arrived at Jacksonville, Florida, 13 February 1941 for patrol duty off the Florida coast, and served as harbor entrance control station in Saint Johns River between December 1941 and March 1942. Her last service was as examination ship at Key West, and on 31 May Emerald arrived at Miami, where she lay until decommissioned 11 August 1942. She was transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal 13 November 1945.

Red

Red (レッド, Reddo) is a Trainer who starts off in Pallet Town as an aspiring trainer with a Poliwhirl, believing himself to be superior to his peers. He is sent on a journey to better himself as a trainer and a person, displaying amazing feats of courage and a strong sense of justice. He starts his Pokémon journey with a Bulbasaur he received from Professor Oak, which evolved into Ivysaur and later Venusaur. He is rivals with Professor Oak's grandson, Blue.

In the first arc, Red suffered his first overwhelming defeat when he failed to capture the mysterious Mew, leading him to Professor Oak for advice on becoming a better Pokémon trainer. This led him to a long journey all across Kanto, crossing paths with Blue and Green along the way. During his journey, he became entangled in many plots by the nefarious Team Rocket, effectively foiling them each time. Together with Blue and Green, Red ultimately defeated Team Rocket when they tried to take control of Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. He later defeated the Team Rocket leader Giovanni in a one-on-one Pokémon battle and captured Team Rocket's ultimate weapon, the genetically created Pokémon Mewtwo. Finally, Red participated in the Indigo Plateau Pokémon League Tournament, defeating his rival Blue in the final match and becoming the Pokémon Champion.
