Postmodernism became the leading intellectual movement in the late twentieth century. It has replaced modernism, the philosophy of the Enlightenment. For modernism’s principles of objective reality, reason, and individualism, it has substituted its own precepts of relative feeling, social construction, and groupism. This substitution has now spread to major cultural institutions such as education, journalism, and the law, where it manifests itself as race and gender politics, advocacy journalism, political correctness, multiculturalism, and the rejection of science and technology. At the 1998 Summer Seminar of the Institute for Objectivist Studies (now called The Atlas Society), Dr. Hicks offered a systematic analysis and dissection of the Postmodernist movement and outlined the core Objectivist tenets needed to rejuvenate the Enlightenment spirit. ABOUT STEPHEN HICKS: Stephen Hicks is a Canadian-American philosopher who teaches at Rockford University, where he also directs the Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship. Hicks earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Guelph, Canada, and his Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington. His doctoral thesis was a defense of foundationalism. Hicks is the author of two books and a documentary. "Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault." He argues that postmodernism is best understood as a rhetorical strategy of intellectuals and academics on the far-Left of the political spectrum to the failure of socialism and communism. His documentary and book "Nietzsche and the Nazis" is an examination of the ideological and philosophical roots of National Socialism, particularly how Friedrich Nietzsche's ideas were used, and in some cases misused, by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis to justify their beliefs and practices. This was released in 2006 as a video documentary and then in 2010 as a book. Additionally, Hicks has published articles and essays on a range of subjects, including free speech in academia, the history and development of modern art, Ayn Rand's Objectivism, business ethics, and the philosophy of education, including a series of YouTube lectures. Hicks is also the co-editor, with David Kelley, of a critical thinking textbook, "The Art of Reasoning: Readings for Logical Analysis."

In this presentation on ‘Postmodernism as Counter-Enlightenment’, Mohamed Nazeer, a journalist based in Kerala, India, shows how postmodernism as well as its relativist epistemology serves as counter-modernity. Postmodernism as a cluster of theories, he argues, is incompatible with the spirit of the post-Enlightenment modernity. As a European intellectual movement, 18 th century Enlightenment triggered a spirit of questioning and of humanism which ultimately led to the toppling of the authorities of religion, monarchy and aristocracy and the installation of the principles of universality, equality and democracy. At the heart of the Enlightenment project is the application of reason and the use of scientific experiments to unravel the truth. Postmodernism, Mohamed Nazeer argues, is a rejection of all the principles of Enlightenment. For postmodernists no meaningful conclusions about truth and reality is possible because they are constructed in culture and language. If what we can know is only different versions of truth, all equally valid, a religious or mythical story of the origin of the universe, for example, is no different from the scientific explanations based on experiments and evidence, the presentation demonstrates. In other words, postmodernism believes that science cannot claim any epistemic privilege that it claims today. Explaining the fashionable theories of Lyotard, Foucault, Derrida and Thomas Kuhn, Mohamed Nazeer shows in this presentation that the questioning of the epistemic privilege of science as a method of arriving at truth is central to postmodernism as Counter-Enlightenment thought. He also shows in this presentation how postmodernism and its offshoot relativism lead to self-refutation and nihilism. Postmodernist relativist’s claim that truth is relative is equivalent to saying that ‘It is true that there is no absolute truth.’ If postmodernism celebrates differences because it is tolerant towards differences, that amounts to saying that some virtues such as tolerance is universal and acceptable because it is just. The presentation concludes by emphasising that human beings cannot bypass the questions 'What is true? What is false'.

In addition, Wen is a member of the State Consultant Committee of Environmental Protection. Currently, he is leading China's grassroots movement to revive rural economies and communities. Zhihe Wang, born in Beijing, China, is di-rector of the Institute for Postmodern De-velopment of China, the executive director of the China Project, Center for Process Studies, Claremont. He is also director of Center for Constructive Postmodern Studies and professor of philosophy at Harbin Institute of Technology. His areas of specialty include process philosophy, constructive postmodernism, ecological civilization, and second enlightenment. His recent publications include: "Green Development and Innovation From Glob-al Perspective" (with Jianjun Zhao,2013); "Process and Pluralism: Chinese Thought on the Harmony of Diversity" (2012); "Second Enlightenment" (with Meijun Fan, 2011). CSUSB Modern China Lecture Series Friday, April 18, 2014, 12-2pm, PL-4005, Dr. Zhihe Wang Lecture Title: "Constructive Postmodernism in China Today" "Constructive Postmodernism" based on Alfred North Whitehead's process philosophy refers to a pluralistic but integrative thinking, worldview, and practice. Eighteen years ago, almost no Chinese had heard the term "Constructive Postmodernism," which was coined by David Ray Griffin. The only kind of postmodernism with which they were familiar was the deconstructive postmodernism of French philosophers such as Derrida and Foucault. But today "Constructive Postmodernism" has become an influential movement in China, which is gaining a following among intellectuals and politicians alike. Why has Constructive Postmodernism been so well received in China recently, and what is the deep convergence between Constructive Postmodernism and Chinese tradition? What is its impact on China today, and what kinds of challenge is it facing? This lecture will address these questions and explore China's current shift toward an ecological civilization. Speaker Bio: Zhihe Wang, born in Beijing, China, is director of the Institute for Postmodern Development of China, and the executive director of the China Project, Center for Process Studies, Claremont. Have the new atheists won the battle of ideas by proving that religion isn't true? Scientists and philosophers such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and Lawrence Krauss have brought a new fire to debates on religion and belief by using the tools of logic and scientific method to dismantle the 'God Hypothesis.' But the response of 'new religion' is that theology cannot necessarily be understood by evidence or facts. As with the belief in equality or the belief that torture is wrong, defending religious belief in this misses the point. According to Peter Rollins, "faith is not placed into danger by being exposed as counter-factual," and to try and defend it in this way is to undermine its very nature. Can these contemporary views of religion open a new front in the atheism vs. religion battle? Or are they just a strategy to co-opt the middle ground for the religious? The Man of the Medieval and Postmodern

As spirits they belong to the eternal world but as animals they inhabit time. ' C. S. LewisMedieval WorldViewThe medieval man believed that the world was set up in a way that inverted our natural experience. He believed that the universe was a chain or set of graded planes the top of which was the highest Heaven in which God dwelt in timeless undeviating unity. The second link of the chain was the high angels gradually grading down in an intricate theology of numbers to the lower angels who dwelt in the realm of Aether. The Aether was described as the means through which God communicated with the Earth. It consisted of all living intelligence beyond the moon. Rather than being Space as we term it today the Aether was a dazzling world of light filled to overflowing with miraculous planets stars and spiritual beings. The medieval man believed the darkness with which we see it was only a shadow cast by the earth in the light of the moon and that in reality outside the shadow it was a sphere of glorious light. Aether and the high Heaven were at the top of the chain and the medieval man praised them for their very unchangeable quality their fixedness. Below the moon there came Air through which the Aether communicated with the Earth. The Air in the medieval mind was directly influenced by the warfare that went on in the Aether and the highest Heaven. Thus birth death sickness health were all contributed to events taking place in the spiritual realm. Therefore doctors would blame sicknesses on what they named 'Influence' which in the Italian is 'Influenza. ' Thus the beginning of the term. Below the Air there came the Earth on which Man with his supposedly disgusting inconstancy and fickle purpose dwelt. Man and Earth were distorted mirrors of the Heavenly realm. Thus the medieval man's fetish with creating as much beauty on Earth as possible in order that he might come closest to the vast glory above the moon thus the medieval man's staunch belief in the spiritual properties of the stuff of Earth and his loyalty to magiclore. For where the Astrology of the planets and the Aether forced upon man a changeless Fate Magic was developed as a means to cast off the icy clutches of serendipity. Beneath Man came the Animal world which the medieval man viewed as a grotesque shadow of himself through which he could learn spiritual lessons. For example the ant was a lesson for the sluggard the rule of the queen bee a lesson for the monarch. Lower than the Animal was the Plant filled with life and yet inanimate. And below the Plant at the very outskirts of the medieval worldview lay Hell and the daemonic world as far away from God as was possible in the intricate planing of the spheres. PostModern WorldviewInterestingly the postmodern man has a fully different view of the world. In fact it is inverted. Where the medieval man believed in a world of utter order absolute truth the postmodern man believes there is no truth and that each person's absolute is made up only of his mysterious experiences. Rather than God being at the center of the universe with the sinful Earth being at the very outskirts of the Heavenly Realm the postmodern man believes that the sinful world is the center of the universe. As time goes by the postmodern worldview becomes more and more obsessed with what to the medieval man was the low rung on the ladder the Plant. Thus the Green movement. The postmodern man has intellectually negated the possibility of either a Hell or a Heaven and instead has endowed the realms of Plant Animal and Air with a strange godlike authority which must control the actions of Man. On the next link of the postmodern chain is Man which with the Animal as his god is seeking to become more and more like an Animal himself. Just as the medieval man sought to become like his Creator so the postmodern man seeks to become like his supposed predecessor the Animal. Thus the postmodern man has negated meaning in the universe. There is no spiritual realm there is no truth there is no creativity there is no intelligence except to prove intelligence nonexistent for the Animal is not in the image of the Divine the Animal has no reason or emotion the Animal has no creativity the Animal has no intelligence.
