The concept of genius, in literary theory and literary history, derives from the later 18th century, when it began to be distinguished from ingenium in a discussion of the genius loci, or "spirit of the place." It was a way of discussing essence, in that each place was supposed to have its own unique and immutable nature, but this essence was determinant, in that all persons of a place would be infused or inspired by that nature. In the early nationalistic literary theories of the Augustan era, each nation was supposed to have a nature determined by its climate, air, and fauna that made a nation's poetry, manners, and art singular. It created national character.
T.V.F. Brogan argues that "genius" is a middle term in the evolution of the idea of inspiration and poetic ability from a belief in an external source (afflatus, or divine infection, and poetic phrenzy, or divine madness) and an internal source (imagination and the subconscious). However, the concept became nearly identical with poetic madness and divine madness in later Romanticism. The word itself was conflated with the Latin ingenium (natural ability) by the time of the Renaissance, and it thereby becomes a natural spirit or natural essence unique to the individual and yet derived from the place. In this sense, it is still a term synonymous with skill.
A genius is someone embodying exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of unprecedented insight.
There is no scientifically precise definition of genius, and indeed the question of whether the notion itself has any real meaning has long been a subject of debate. The term is used in various ways: to refer to a particular aspect of an individual, or the individual in their entirety; to a scholar in many subjects (e.g. Isaac Newton or Leonardo da Vinci) or a scholar in a single subject (e.g. Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking). Research into what causes genius and mastery is still in its early stages, but psychology already offers relevant insights.
In ancient Rome, the genius (plural in Latin genii) was the guiding spirit or tutelary deity of a person, family (gens), or place (genius loci). The noun is related to the Latin verbgigno, genui, genitus, "to bring into being, create, produce." Because the achievements of exceptional individuals seemed to indicate the presence of a particularly powerful genius, by the time of Augustus the word began to acquire its secondary meaning of "inspiration, talent."
William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry has led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". Although he lived in London his entire life except for three years spent in Felpham he produced a diverse and symbolically rich corpus, which embraced the imagination as "the body of God", or "Human existence itself".
Considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterised as part of both the Romantic movement and "Pre-Romantic", for its large appearance in the 18th century. Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England – indeed, to all forms of organised religion – Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American revolutions, as well as by such thinkers as Jakob Böhme and Emanuel Swedenborg. Despite these known influences, the singularity of Blake's work makes him difficult to classify. The 19th-century scholar William Rossetti characterised Blake as a "glorious luminary," and as "a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors".

Tiger tiger burning bright. . . did He Who made the lamb make TheeThe genius and simple mad great nature in William Blake was there in a study in fourth year tutorial about how Blake and his thoughts were carried forward from his lifetime 17571827 that saw him through the worst horrors of the Industrial Revolution when children were virtually chained to tables to produce mass goods practices we now denounce through the third world but have really been around since time immemorial. But when Blake described the naked reality of a small boy stuck in a chimney and abandoned by his chimney sweep because he had had a growth spurt or eaten too much greedy boy. In the time of the American revolution while Colonists were fighting against taxation without representation Blake was speaking of children chained to their wheels or abandoned in a sooty chimney until his cries died down and the fires burned out his skeletal remains. His soot would filter out over the neighbors for some time and then be forgotten an abandoned orphan anyway. So while mad William Blake stoke the fires of indignation which set the way for another victim of the rough life of a father who was too much a borrower and so came to know the Poor House Charles Dickens. And all those words of horror and indignation from the heart of Dickens pushed a change that had already begun and a life of decency became a standard for all. It took mad William Blake who said in his later years the first thing is You work up your imagination and allow it to become a vision and then the thing is done. The Wise Men from the East could not have said it better.

Is Eating Babies Really So Terrible? The Dark Genius of Jonathan Swift
UW Professor of English, Thomas Lockwood, explores the dark genius of Jonathan Swift, one of the greatest satirists in world literature. Regarded as an intensely controversial figure, a brilliant political combatant in British history, a national hero in Ireland, and arguably the greatest satirist in world literature, Swift's contemporaries loved him for his comic genius, ranking him with Rabelais and Cervantes. The Victorians of the next century thought he must have been mad. To those who lived through the nightmare of twentieth-century world warfare, Swift seemed not only sane but a prophet.
Lockwood’s talk is part of the Katz Distinguished Lectures in the Humanities, a series named in memory of Solomon Katz, who served for 53 years at the UW in many capacities, including as Chair of the Department of History and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Organized by the Simpson Center for the Humanities, Katz Lectures honor the role of the humanities in liberal education.

Ann Jefferson is professor of French literature at the University of Oxford and fellow and tutor in French at New College, Oxford. Her books include Reading Realism in Stendhal and Biography and the Question of

Encyclopedia Britannica lists Nikola Tesla as one of the top ten most fascinating people in history. So why is he virtually unknown to the general public? This program is a penetrating study of the life and mind of a scientific superman who, against all odds, dedicated his life to the task of designing and improving technology for the service and advancement of humanity.

Ancient Religious Literature - William Blake as Inspired Genius
Ancient Religious Literature - William Blake as Inspired Genius
William Blake first came to me in third year university English and I was utterly amazed. It was 1969 and so much was happening that we talk about and here was this ancient philosopher who by his nature would be walking today against any war and the system as it was abusing the common man. That was Blake and yet he spoke created crafted his expressions to humanity in ways that he is recognized as one of the greatest English creative minds ever.

Child Prodigies and the Performance of Genius: from Pascal to Minou Drouet
April 9, 2015, a talk by Ann Jefferson
Ann Jefferson discussed her recent work on genius in France. Child prodigies are a recurrent feature of the literature on genius, which records the many occasions on which the exceptional talents of children have been held up for exhibition. When the prodigy is incited to become a performer, the effect is both to confirm and to question the assumptions we hold about the nature of genius itself.
Ann Jefferson is professor of French literature at the University of Oxford and fellow and tutor in French at New College, Oxford. Her books include Reading Realism in Stendhal and Biography and the Question of Literature in France and most recently, Genius in France: An Idea and its Uses (Princeton UP, 2014).

NIKOLA TESLA - The Genius Who Lit the World - FEATURE - Cat# K375Y
This program reveals the discoveries of a forgotten genius, many of which went virtually unnoticed for nearly a century. Nikola Tesla is considered the father of our modern technological age and one of the most mysterious and controversial scientists in history. How did this obscure visionary from what is now Croatia, lay the foundation for modern communications and energy research?
Nikola Tesla's contributions to science and technology include the invention of radio, television, radio-astronomy, remote control and robotics, radar, medical x-ray and the wireless transmission of electricity. Many of Nikola Tesla's inventions were and in some cases still are considered too revolutionary by government agencies and the power brokers of the time and are discussed in detail in this program.
