This tutorial is inspired by Tippi's make-up in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. The make-up changes subtly throughout the movie, which as I say in the video, may have been deliberate but may also have been a result of the Techicolour film, lighting etc.
For The Birds and Marnie (Hitchcock's second an last fim with Hedren), Hitchcock dictated every aspect of Tippi's look on and off screen. Hitchcocks vision was meticulously carried out by legendary costume designer Edith Head, Howard Smit on Make-up and Hairdresser Virginia Darcy.
It's a great 'vintage-chic' look for a party! X
This look can be re-created using any brands of make-up you currently own.

Actress Melanie Griffith had no ordinary childhood.
She is the daughter of famed starlet and Hitchcock muse Tippi Hedren, began acting when she was just a toddler, and started dating Hollywood heartthrob Don Johnson was she was just 14-years-old - and he was 22.
Also, her family had a giant pet lion named Neil.
In a new set of photos that have recently been released, we get a look into the life of Griffith and her family, and see just what it is like to have one of the most fearsome creatures in the wild as a pet.
Turns out, not much different than having any other kind of domesticated pet.
Neil is seen lounging on the floor as the maid steps over him, chilling with Griffith in her bed and mostly just horsing, or rather lioning, around with his human family.
The majestic beast was adopted by the family after they took a trip to Africa and decided to make a movie about lions, Roar.
Sadly, the movie was a box office flop, and some of the lions got a bit rough on set.
Griffith required 50 stitches at one point after being bit by one of the cats, and cinematographer Jan de Bont had to have his scalp sewn back on after being attacked.
In the end, 70 people wound up being injured by the film’s cast of 150 large predatory cats.
But hey, hakuna matata.

Nathalie Kay "Tippi" Hedren (born January 19, 1930) is an American actress and former fashion model. She is primarily known for her roles in two Alfred Hitchcock films, The Birds and Marnie (in which she played the title role), and her extensive efforts in animal rescue at Shambala Preserve, an 80-acre (320,000 m2) wildlife habitat which she founded in 1983.
Hedren is the mother of actress Melanie Griffith, with whom she shares credits on several productions, notably Pacific Heights (1990).
Hedren was born in New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1930, the daughter of Dorothea Henrietta née Eckhardt) and Bernard Carl Hedren. Her paternal grandparents were immigrants from Sweden, and her maternal ancestry is German and Norwegian. Her father ran a small general store in the small town of Lafayette, Minnesota and gave her the nickname "Tippi." "My father thought Nathalie was a little bit much for a brand new baby," Hedren explained at a 2004 screening of The Birds.
As a teenager, Hedren took part in department store fashion shows. Her parents relocated to California while she was still a high school student. When she reached her 18th birthday, she bought a ticket to New York and began a professional modeling career. Within a year she made her film debut (minus dialogue) as a Petty Girl model in The Petty Girl (1950) musical comedy, although in interviews she refers to The Birds (1963) as her first film.

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, KBE (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) was an English film director and producer. He pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. After a successful career in British cinema in both silent films and early talkies, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood. On 19 April 1955, he became an American citizen while remaining a British subject.
Over a career spanning more than half a century, Hitchcock fashioned for himself a distinctive and recognisable directorial style. He pioneered the use of a camera made to move in a way that mimics a person's gaze, forcing viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism. He framed shots to maximise anxiety, fear, or empathy, and used innovative film editing. His stories frequently feature fugitives on the run from the law alongside "icy blonde" female characters. Many of Hitchcock's films have twist endings and thrilling plots featuring depictions of violence, murder, and crime, although many of the mysteries function as decoys or "MacGuffins" meant only to serve thematic elements in the film and the extremely complex psychological examinations of the characters. Hitchcock's films also borrow many themes from psychoanalysis and feature strong sexual undertones. Through his cameo appearances in his own films, interviews, film trailers, and the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents, he became a cultural icon. Hitchocks reputation as a filmmaker is offset by claims that he engaged in obsessive and controlling behaviour towards many of his leading ladies, and that in some cases this extended to physical abuse and sexual harrassment.

Plot: When Grace Kelly retires from films to marry Prince Rainier Alfred Hitchcock looks for a similar blonde and finds her in TV model,the little known Tippi Hedren,who will star in his film adaptation of horror story 'The Birds'. Hitchcock is obsessed with Tippi sexually and,when she rebuffs his advances,sadistically puts her through five days of filming where she is attacked and injured by real birds. Hitchcock's wife Alma and his assistant Peggy are appalled but can do nothing. Tippi is resolved that she will not give in to Hitchcock despite the situation giving her nightmares. Hitchcock and Tippi make a second film,'Marnie'. Having admitted that Alma is the only woman he has ever had sex with and that he now finds her cold Hitchcock continues to pursue Tippi, bombarding her with phone calls declaring his love for her yet reminding her that he alone made her famous and she owes him. At this stage Tippi demands that her contract be terminated and an end title states that they never worked together again.

This tutorial is inspired by Tippi's make-up in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. The make-up changes subtly throughout the movie, which as I say in the video, may have been deliberate but may also have been a result of the Techicolour film, lighting etc.
For The Birds and Marnie (Hitchcock's second an last fim with Hedren), Hitchcock dictated every aspect of Tippi's look on and off screen. Hitchcocks vision was meticulously carried out by legendary costume designer Edith Head, Howard Smit on Make-up and Hairdresser Virginia Darcy.

This tutorial is inspired by Tippi's make-up in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. The make-up changes subtly throughout the movie, which as I say in the video, may have been deliberate but may also have been a result of the Techicolour film, lighting etc.
For The Birds and Marnie (Hitchcock's second an last fim with Hedren), Hitchcock dictated every aspect of Tippi's look on and off screen. Hitchcocks vision was meticulously carried out by legendary costume designer Edith Head, Howard Smit on Make-up and Hairdresser Virginia Darcy.
It's a great 'vintage-chic' look for a party! X
This look can be re-created using any brands of make-up you currently own.

Actress Melanie Griffith had no ordinary childhood.
She is the daughter of famed starlet and Hitchcock muse Tippi Hedren, began acting when she was just a toddler, and started dating Hollywood heartthrob Don Johnson was she was just 14-years-old - and he was 22.
Also, her family had a giant pet lion named Neil.
In a new set of photos that have recently been released, we get a look into the life of Griffith and her family, and see just what it is like to have one of the most fearsome creatures in the wild as a pet.
Turns out, not much different than having any other kind of domesticated pet.
Neil is seen lounging on the floor as the maid steps over him, chilling with Griffith in her bed and mostly just horsing, or rather lioning, around with his human family.
The majestic beast was adopted by the family after they took a trip to Africa and decided to make a movie about lions, Roar.
Sadly, the movie was a box office flop, and some of the lions got a bit rough on set.
Griffith required 50 stitches at one point after being bit by one of the cats, and cinematographer Jan de Bont had to have his scalp sewn back on after being attacked.
In the end, 70 people wound up being injured by the film’s cast of 150 large predatory cats.
But hey, hakuna matata.

Legendary Hollywood actress Tippi Hedren (The Birds, Marni) is back in the headlines -- and on the small screen -- with the upcoming release on HBO of The Girl, a made-for-TV movie about her strained relationship with Hitchcock. Sienna Miller plays Hedren and Toby Jones plays the director in the film, which debuts in October.
The story is about a young actress fighting off the hands and sexual demands of a controlling cinematic legend unaccustomed to taking no for an answer. It has taken Miss Hedren 50 years to get even with Hitchcock but her moment is approaching.
In addition to being portrayed in The Girl, Miss Hedren is also shooting an upcoming episode of the Fox sitcom "Raising Hope," in which she is typecast as Melanie Griffith's mother.
Where does Hollywood get these crazy ideas?

It’s the circus — Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey — and Kenneth Feld. I think when God needs money, he calls Kenneth Feld. This man controls Washington, whatever he wants. He has made noises that he doesn’t like this bill. I have written an open letter to Congress: ‘Will anyone stand beside me against Kenneth Feld?’ He’s got to be stopped.”
Hedren's philanthropic commitment to abandoned exotic felines -- lions, tigers, cougars, black and spotted leopards, servals, bobcats, and Asian leopard cats -- showed the public another side of her when she founded The Roar Foundation and Shambala Preserve on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 1983.
The Preserve is home to 50 retired big cats and she will appear before Congress on September 20th to speak on behalf of the "Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act".
