Sir Walter Raleigh (/ˈrɔːli/, /ˈræli/, or /ˈrɑːli/;circa 1554 – 29 October 1618) was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy, and explorer. He was cousin to Sir Richard Grenville and younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England.
Raleigh was born to a Protestant family in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. Little is known of his early life, though he spent some time in Ireland, in Killua Castle, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, taking part in the suppression of rebellions and participating in the Siege of Smerwick. Later, he became a landlord of property confiscated from the native Irish. He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. Instrumental in the English colonisation of North America, Raleigh was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, which paved the way for future English settlements. In 1591, he secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting, without the Queen's permission, for which he and his wife were sent to the Tower of London. After his release, they retired to his estate at Sherborne, Dorset.

The Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, established on Roanoke Island, in what is today's Dare County, North Carolina, United States, was a late 16th-century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement. The colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh.
The colonists disappeared during the Anglo-Spanish War, three years after the last shipment of supplies from England. Their disappearance gave rise to the nickname "The Lost Colony." To this day there has been no conclusive evidence as to what happened to the colonists.
The enterprise was originally financed and organized by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who drowned in 1583 during an aborted attempt to colonize St. John's, Newfoundland. Sir Humphrey Gilbert's half-brother, Sir Walter Raleigh, later gained his brother's charter from the Queen and subsequently executed the details of the charter through his delegates Ralph Lane and Richard Grenville, Raleigh's distant cousin.

A presentation on the esteemed English figure, Sir Walter Raleigh. Music Credits to: Jon Legend All of Me Avril Lavigne Imagine by John Lennon Made with Video Scribe Project.
Like his contemporary Sir Francis Drake, Raleigh held a contempt and loathing for the Spanish that he possessed from an early age. Unlike Drake however, Raleigh found himself deeply embroiled in court and royal politics that would ultimately restrict his ability for travel, exploration and adventure. A believer in the legend of El Dorado, Raleigh repeatedly travelled to South America in a bid for colonisation for his queen, trade routes for his country, and untold riches and fame for himself. Dramatised 'eye-witness' accounts, reconstructions and period imagery help to convey the tale of one of England's greatest heroes. I am the Raleigh is a drama of Sir Walter's trial, when he strove with Edward Coke, the great accuser, to exonerate himself.
I had the great pleasure of filming this little video for musician Ben Kitching. I'll let Ben's music speak for itself, but I must say it was such a lovely feeling to sit and listen to him play his tunes on this sunny afternoon down a little alleyway in Brighton. Peace

A clue uncovered in a long-forgotten, centuries-old map of the area called "La Virginea Pars"—drawn by the colony's governor John White—kicked off a reexamination of the fate of the lost colonists. An artist and employee of explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, White was later appointed governor of the new lands; he was also the grandfather of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World.
