The Olentangy River /oʊlənˈtændʒi/ is a 97-mile-long (156 km)tributary of the Scioto River in Ohio.
It was originally called keenhongsheconsepung, a Delaware word literally translated as "stone for your knife stream", based on the shale found along its shores. Early settlers to the region translated this into "Whetstone River". In 1833, the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation intending to restore the original Native American names to some Ohio waterways, but mistakenly gave Whetstone River the name "Olentangy"—Delaware for "river of the red face paint"—which had actually belonged to what is now known as Big Darby Creek.
The Olentangy River rises in Crawford County approximately 2 mi (3.2 km) northeast of Galion, flowing through Galion and northwest towards Bucyrus, where it then turns south and flows through Eastern Marion County, Ohio (where it is still locally known as the Whetstone River) before flowing south into Delaware County. The river continues southward towards the communities of Delaware, Powell, Worthington, and the village of Riverlea, before reaching Columbus and the campus of the Ohio State University, before joining with the Scioto River in downtown Columbus.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
The Ohio State University, commonly referred to as Ohio State or OSU, is a public research university in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870, as a land-grant university and ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college began with a focus on training students in various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but was developed into a comprehensive university under the direction of Governor Rutherford B. Hayes and in 1878 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law changing the name to "The Ohio State University". It has since grown into the third largest university campus in the United States. Along with its main campus in Columbus, Ohio State also operates a regional campus system with regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.
The university is also home to an extensive student life program, with over 1,000 student organizations; intercollegiate, club and recreational sports programs; student media organizations and publications, fraternities and sororities; and three active student governments. Ohio State athletic teams compete in Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision for football) of the NCAA and are known as the Ohio State Buckeyes. The university is a member of the Big Ten Conference for the majority of sports. The Ohio State Buckeyes men's ice hockey program competes in the Big Ten Conference, while its women's hockey program competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. In addition, the OSU men's volleyball team is a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA). OSU is one of only fourteen universities in the nation that plays Division I FBS football and Division I ice hockey. Alumni and former students have gone on to prominent careers in government, business, science, medicine, education, sports, and entertainment.
The Ohio River, which streams westward from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Cairo, Illinois, is the largest tributary, by volume, of the Mississippi River in the United States. At the confluence, the Ohio is considerably bigger than the Mississippi (Ohio at Cairo: 281,500 cu ft/s (7,960 m3/s); Mississippi at Thebes: 208,200 cu ft/s (5,897 m3/s)) and, thus, is hydrologically the main stream of the whole river system, including the Allegheny River further upstream.
The 981-mile (1,579 km) river flows through or along the border of six states, and its drainage basin includes parts of 15 states. Through its largest tributary, the Tennessee River, the basin includes many of the states of the southeastern U.S. It is the source of drinking water for three million people.
It is named in Iroquoian or Seneca: Ohi:yó, lit. "Good River" or Shawnee: Pelewathiipi and Spelewathiipi. The river had great significance in the history of the Native Americans, as numerous civilizations formed along its valley. For thousands of years, Native Americans used the river as a major transportation and trading route. Its waters connected communities. In the five centuries before European conquest, the Mississippian culture built numerous regional chiefdoms and major earthwork mounds in the Ohio Valley, such as Angel Mounds near Evansville, Indiana, as well as in the Mississippi Valley and the Southeast. The Osage, Omaha, Ponca and Kaw lived in the Ohio Valley, but under pressure from the Iroquois to the northeast, migrated west of the Mississippi River to Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma in the 17th century.
A state university system in the United States is a group of public universities supported by an individual state, or a similar entity such as the District of Columbia. These systems constitute the majority of public-funded universities in the country. Each state supports at least one such system.
State university systems should not be confused with federally funded colleges and universities, at which attendance is limited to military personnel and government employees. Members of foreign militaries and governments also attend some schools. These schools include the United States military academies, Naval Postgraduate School, and military staff colleges.
A state university system normally means a single legal entity and administration, but may consist of several institutions, each with its own identity as a university. Some states—such as California and Texas—support more than one such system.
State universities get subsidies from their states. The amount of the subsidy varies from university to university and state to state, but the effect is to lower tuition costs below that of private universities for students from that state or district. As more and more Americans attend college, and private tuition rates increase well beyond the rate of inflation, admission to state universities is becoming more and more competitive.

This is a video I put together of various shots around the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on July 14th, 2008. The geese were filmed right on the bank of the Olentangy River directly across from Ohio Stadium. Video was filmed on a Canon Vixia HF10, shot in 1920x1080 in 30p @ 17Mbps . Audio is unaltered. Song at the end is part of 'La Javanaise' by Madeleine Peyroux. Thanks for watching.

This is one of the more amusing interviews from "Try Your Luck." Kristi is into celebrity gossip and, naturally, aspires to become an entertainment reporter. The amusing part of this interview, however, is her story about her attempt to save a lobster from certain death in the kitchen.... The Olentangy River? Really?

Environmental tea leaves? Studying riverbed sediment, plant life in a wetland area, or uncovering artifacts of past civilizations give scientists a glimpse of the past to predict our ecologist future. Sharing their knowledge at the July 9 forum will be William (Bill) Mitsch, eminent scholar and director, Everglades Wetland Research Park, Florida Gulf Coast University, professor emeritus at The Ohio State University, and Brad Lepper, curator of Archaeology, Ohio History Connection (formerly the Ohio Historical Society). "Climate change is going to be a big factor in our future. Learning the lessons of the past might help us respond appropriately to the challenges and opportunities we will face in the coming decades," wrote Brad Lepper in his June 15 article in The Columbus Dispatch." Wetlands provide more value to humans and nature alike per unit area than any other part of our landscape. They control floods, clean up water polluted by fertilizers and other contaminants, and serve as the best carbon sequestration ecosystems on the planet. Studies by Dr. William Mitsch and his students at Ohio State's Olentangy River Wetland Research Park over the past 20 years, as well as his studies at Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve in Ohio, the Florida Everglades, the Louisiana Delta, Botswana's Okavango Delta, and all over the world have illustrated the "how" of wetlands providing important ecosystem services, including those to mitigate climate change. Recent studies have illustrated that methane emissions from most wetlands do not matter because of their abil...
On Monday, January 12, 2015, at 4:51am, two unidentified males entered the Walmart store located at 2700 Bethel Road, and stole multiple “Apple” I-Pads. Investigation revealed both suspects were picked up by cab, from the Varsity Inn at 3246 Olentangy River Rd., using the name “John Lewis,” and transported to the Walmart store, where they asked the driver to wait for them. Upon entering the store, both suspects walked to the electronics section located in the rear of the store. Suspect #1, finding the display case locked, produced a hammer and smashed the glass of the display case. He then removed a total of ten I-Pads, placing them on a shelf nearby while suspect #2 acted as a “look-out.” Both suspects walked around the store for a couple of minutes, retrieved the electronics, placed them...
