David (/ˈdeɪvɪd/; Hebrew: דָּוִד, Modern David, Tiberian Dāwîḏ;ISO 259-3 Dawid; Arabic: داوُد Dāwūd; Syriac: ܕܘܝܕ Dawid; Ancient Greek: Δαυίδ; Latin: Davidus, David; Strong's: Daveed) was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 – 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010–970 BCE.
The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only Old Testament sources of information on David, although the Tel Dan Stele (dated c. 850–835 BCE) contains the phrase בית דוד (bytdwd), read as "House of David", which many scholars confirm to be a likely plausible match to the existence in the mid-9th century BCE of a Judean royal dynasty called the House of David.
Depicted as a valorous warrior of great renown, and a poet and musician credited for composing much of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms, King David is widely viewed as a righteous and effective king in battle and civil justice. He is described as a man after God's own heart in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22.

Plot: Journalist Mark Templeton interviews some of the players in a bizarre true story. On a Bolton housing estate reticent, middle-aged Shaun Greenhalgh created fake paintings and antiques which his elderly parents George and Olive passed off as the real thing, duping the art world out of hundreds of thousands of pounds with their seemingly innocent provenances. After the local museum has paid £400,000 for a fake statue George - despite Shaun's protests that they were getting too ambitious - decided to hit the British Museum with phony Assyrian reliefs. But a spelling mistake on one of them proved to be the family's undoing and Shaun was imprisoned for four and a half years, his parents receiving suspended sentences. Templeton feels sorry for Shaun, an unrecognized talent who figured in a victimless crime, and it is apparent that the author also regards Shaun, with his philosophical observations, in the same light.

Plot: Ling Min becomes the manager of Haier Factory when the factory is almost bankrupted. He has had no formal education, but on his own, he systematically studies Western theories of industrial management and such classical Chinese philosophies as Confucianism, Taoism, and Suntzu. His first challenge is from the Chinese workers, technicians, and officers, who have been trained to work under the old system and unable to function sufficiently in the new era of international competition. Once his products become good enough, he has to face severe competition, and, in some cases, humiliations, from well-established foreign companies. He and his company succeed in becoming the first Chinese private company to enter the international market, because of hard work, scientific management, and the combination of Western and Eastern philosophy.

Plot: Five cops work and get on each other's nerves during a hot summer. Tak is a gambler, too much so for his girlfriend to risk marriage. Daddy, a single father, is harsh with his son who reminds him of the woman who abandoned them. Monk is mercurial, talkative, a show-off. Kong, a steady family man, keeps the peace. Sam is new, hoping to fit in and make it as a cop. Three brutal and murderous robbers are on the loose, and so is a former soldier, embittered over the loss of his pension, using very real bombs to extort what's due him. It's a dangerous job, and the cops must watch each other's back, regardless of their personal problems.

Plot: Dr. Warren Chapin is a pathologist who regularly conducts autopsies on executed prisoners at the State prison. He has a theory that fear is the result of a creature that inhabits all of us. His theory is that the creature is suppressed by our ability to scream when fear strikes us. He gets a chance to test his theories when he meets Ollie and Martha Higgins, who own and operate a second-run movie theater. Martha is deaf and mute and if she is unable to scream, extreme fear should make the creature, which Chapin has called the Tingler, come to life and grow. Using LSD to induce nightmares, he begins his experiment.
