11 years after Jim O'Brien died, WPVI TV 6 featured a show about the Famous 56 Boss Jock DJ and WPVI TV 6 weatherman. He will live forever in the lives of people who knew him. His daughter, Peri Gilpin, is interviewed in this segment. She is the famous actress on the tv show Frazier. I was in high school when he was the weatherman on channel 6 and everyone at the school cafeteria lunch table would comment how great and entertaining he was the night before giving the weather forcast. One night Jim was telling us to look out for the ENNIE winds! He called the ENE (East North East) winds the ENNIE winds. He would also draw funny cartoon characters or slogans to sum up the next days weather. His delivery was not like a professional meteorologist but he could really communicate. You definitely remembered the weather forcast after he told it and smiled when you remembered his delivery.

ABC O&O; WPVI holds the record as the station with the longest running news theme in the country. Other than an attempt to update their music in 1996 (which only stuck for a few days), the Philly station has kept their "marching band" for 44 years! "Move Closer To Your World" echoes sounds of a bygone era but is undeniably unique and memorable... two qualities that make the best news themes! Just for fun, here are some mainstream choices that fit the station's energetic image and we sure didn't forget the bongos! Voiceover by Remington Hernandez. Selections include:

WPVI-TV, 6ABC Philadelphia Presents "Fever - 1793"
----
With a population of approximately 55,000 in 1793, Philadelphia was America's largest city, its capital and its busiest port. The summer of that year was unusually dry and hot. The water levels of streams and wells were dangerously reduced, providing an excellent breeding ground for insects. By July the city's inhabitants were remarking on the extraordinary number of flies and mosquitoes that swarmed around the dock area. That same month, a trickle of refugees escaping political turmoil in the Caribbean Islands became a torrent of thousands as ship after ship unloaded its human cargo on Philadelphia's docks. Unbeknownst to the city's inhabitants, all the necessary ingredients for an unprecedented health disaster were now in place.
With them, the Caribbean refuges brought Yellow Fever. Philadelphia's ravenous mosquitoes provided the perfect vehicle for spreading the disease by first lunching on an infected victim and then biting a healthy one. The first fatalities appeared in July and the numbers grew steadily.
Unaware of the link between the mosquito and the disease's progress, Philadelphia's medical community was dumbfounded. Dr. Benjamin Rush, the city's leading physician and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, advised citizens to flee the city.
A good portion of the population, along with members of Congress, President George Washington and his Cabinet, abandoned the city and moved to Maryland (Now Washington DC). The disease subsided and finally disappeared with the arrival of cold weather in November. It is estimated over 2,000 died.

This is the Action News 11pm broadcast on the eve of Hurricane Gloria. This was supposed to be one of the biggest hurricanes to ever hit the Philadelphia area. It was pretty bad (especially for those around the Jersey Shore), but not the monster that was being predicted during this broadcast. With Jim Garner, Cathy Gandolfo, Phyllis Burke, Vernon Odom, Harry Martin, Dave Roberts, and Eliott Rodriguez.

I met and became good friends with Betty Carter in 1975 while she was appearing at "The Empty Foxhole Cafe" in Philadelphia. In 1980, I produced a documentary on the career of Betty Carter which also included filming her concert performance for Philadelphia station WPVI-TV. During a 1989 segment on my "Bebop City" program titled "The Bebop Singers", Betty Carter told me this incredible story about her early career and the Lionel Hampton Orchestra.
It was my great pleasure to have Betty Carter as a music family friend. It is with this hope that young Jazz Vocalists will take some instruction from a master vocal teacher who can help you find your own original style.
