Visual radio is a generic term for adding visuals to normal audio radio broadcasts. Visual Radio is also a trademark for a Nokia solution for interactive radio with FM radio over a data connection.
Visual Radio is a technology developed by Nokia to make it easier for audiences to interact with radio programs. Visual Radio is built-in functionality available in an increasing number of phones that are already equipped with analog FM radio.
Nokia's Visual Radio is not radio streaming – the audio is received via a regular analog FM radio embedded in the phone. A presentation of graphics and text, synchronized to the audio programming, is being streamed to the phone over a data connection; the FM transmission chain is unaffected by the addition of Visual Radio.
On phones with built-in Wi-Fi (tested on Nokia E51, E63, E66, E71, and N95 8GB), the Nokia application does not allow a Wi-Fi access point to be used for the data connection, only GPRS access points are allowed, allowing the possibility of revenue sharing between Nokia, the Radio stations and GPRS network operators.

Lawo debuts Visual Radio at NAB Show 2015 Visual radio adds entertaining and compelling video content to today’s radio shows. Live camera feeds increase listener engagement with more time spent listening and more interaction with broadcaster’s websites. In Las Vegas, Lawo debuted a new approach to visual radio by combining Lawo radio consoles and video products. Video signals can be attached to certain live audio sources and by audio detection the video naturally follows the voices of the people using microphones, enabling a video production to be created without any extra effort beyond simply speaking. In addition to visual radio, the same concept can be used to provide fully-automated audio and video coverage of sporting events, parliamentary meetings and for surveillance applications....
In September 2015, the ‘Radio Télévision Belge Francophone’ (RTBF) unveiled a new, custom-made visual radio studio. In total, there are nine AW-HE120 cameras in the studio that are controlled by an AW-RP120 remote operation panel as well as 36 TH-47LFV5W screens that form four 3x3 video walls. The "Visual Radio Studio" project won the gold medal in the New Technologies category and silver medal in the Media & Entertainment category at the Online Video Awards 2016.
