Matilda is a 1996 American fantasy comedy film directed by Danny DeVito. The screenplay by Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord is based on Roald Dahl's novel of the same name. The film was released by TriStar Pictures on August 2, 1996 and stars Mara Wilson, DeVito (who also serves as the narrator), Rhea Perlman, Embeth Davidtz, and Pam Ferris.
Matilda Wormwood is a genius, but her parents, Harry and Zinnia (Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, respectively), neglect and mistreat her. At the age of four, she discovers the local library and walks there every day to read while her father is at work, her mother is playing bingo, and her older brother, Michael (Brian Levinson), is at school.
At age six-and-a-half, Matilda begins to lose patience with her parents, expressing a desire to go to school. In retaliation for her father constantly berating her, she adds hydrogen peroxide to his hair tonic, turning his hair an unhealthy blonde. He takes his children to his workshop, where he reveals that the cars he sells are faulty. Matilda accuses him of being dishonest and he belittles her, so she responds by putting super-super-glue on his hat, forcing Zinnia to cut it off of his head. She reads a borrowed library copy of Moby-Dick, which Harry rips up while her family watches television. When he forces her to watch with them, she grows increasingly angry and the television set suddenly explodes.

Plot: A former English boxing champion, Billy Baker, arrives in America with a kangaroo with an unusual talent for boxing. Needing to support himself, he reluctantly joins up with a small time talent agent featuring the kangaroo, Matilda (who's a male kangaroo despite the feminine name) as a carnival act. But when the world heavyweight boxing champion, Lee Dockerty, offers to take Matilda on at the carnival to impress a girlfriend, and Matilda KO's Dockerty into the middle of next week with a single punch, Billy and his marsupial friend are catapulted into the big time, with Matilda now headlining main boxing events, and soon ready to challenge Dockerty for his championship title. This attracts the notice of a mob boss who wants control of Matilda and his growing fame and fortune, and an activist determined to see Billy and Bernie stopped for promoting cruelty to animals. It will take all of Bernie's wits, Billy's wisdom, and Matilda's punching speed and power to get themselves all through in one piece, as Dockerty prepares to defend his title in the ring!

First a finger then a thumb
Matilda started disappearing
In front of everyone
No one noticed how translucent she become
As one by one
It started softly
First a fumble then a kiss
In all his dreams he'd never seen
Perfection like this
No one noticed her hand tug at his
As one by one
The walkers left the park
And one by one
The electric lights went dark
And one by one
He buried her down in this hole
I've got nothing to fear
Somebody knows that I m hiding down here
If I wriggle my toes
They're gonna come find me
If I wiggle my toes
I'm gonna get free
It started slowly
Like a joining up of dots
A dolly on a doorstep
And an empty cardboard box
The choir yawning as the final penny drops
As one by one
We called her name out loud
And one by one
We strained to hear a sound
And one by one
Our torch beam shown
Down in this hole
I've got nothing to fear
Somebody knows that I m hiding down here
If I wiggle my toes
They gonna come find me
Somebody knows that I m under these stones
