Tribute to Bollywood's legendary music director Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar on his 17th death anniversary today.
Starting out as a child artiste in the film 'Aankhen', Laxmikant went on to become a music arranger for composers and later an assistant to music director duo of Kalyanji-Anandji.
Teaming up with Pyarelal in 1963, the duo scored a hit with numbers like "Hasta Hua Noorani Chehra" and "Woh Jab Yaad Aaye" in Parasmani in 1963. The Laxmikant-Pyarelal combo went on to rule the roost in Bollywood for over three decades composing films for a record of nearly 480 films.
Taking on other music directors like RD Burman and Kalyanji-Anandji through the '60s and '70s, they were the last of the old guard who withstood the withering competition from young guns like Anu Malik and Nadeem-Shravan in the 90s.
They became familiar names on all the big banners, from Raj Kapoor to Subhash Ghai. Their stunning music success ensured film makers repeated them.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal also known as LP or Laxmi-Pyare, were a popular Indian composer duo, consisting of Laxmikant Kudalkar (1937--1998) and Pyarelal Sharma (born 1940). They composed music for about 635 Hindi movies from 1963 to 1998, working for almost all notable filmmakers including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand,Feroze Khan, B.R. Chopra, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai, Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai, Manoj Kumar, Rajashri Productions, J. Om Prakash, Raj Khosla, Ramamand Sagar, Mohan Sahagal, V.Shantaram
Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, was born on the day of Laxmi Pujan, onHis father died when he was child. Because of the poor financial conditions of the family he also could not even complete his academic education. Laxmikant's father's friend, a musician himself advised him and his elder brother to learn music. Laxmikant learnt to play the mandolin and his elder brother learnt to play the tabla. he mastered this art on his own. He began organising and performing in Indian Classical Instrumental Music concerts in order to earn some money. Later Laxmi did get the opportunity to learn the mandolin from known player Bal Mukund Indorker and also to learn the violin from Husnalal of the popular music duo Husanlal Bhagatram, especially in the 1940s.
Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, was born in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, on 3 September in 1940. He started learning violin at the age of 8 and practised it 8 to 12 hours daily. He learnt to play violin from a Goan musician named Anthony Gonsalves. The song "My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves" of the movie Amar Akbar Anthony is regarded as a tribute to Mr. Gonsalves. By the age of 12, his family's financial condition had deteriorated, which in turn forced him to earn money by playing in studios. Pyarelal then used to frequent visiting and playing the violin in studios such as Ranjit Studios, to earn money for his family.
Laxmikant and Pyarelal met at Sureel Kala Kendra, a music academy for children, run by the Mangeshkar family. After she came to know about their financially poor backgrounds, Lata recommended their names to music directors like Naushad, S. D. Burman and C. Ramchandra.
Laxmi-Pyare hit the big time with Rajshri Productions' 1964 film Dosti. The film had two newcomer heroes who never became popular, and the film was a success due to its music.
In 1966 LP started cementing their place in Hindi Film Music. Non star cast film Farz was LP's first golden jubilee musical hit followed by big star cast films like Anita, Shagird, yet another Golden Jubilee hit, Patthar Ke Sanam, Night In London, Jaal and another evergreen musical hit Milan.
The combo composed songs for more than 250 movies. Laxmi-Pyare composed Indian classical music as well as Western music. The film Karz is worth specially mentioning here where LP successfully, gave disco-like music, in this film they had experimented with a ghazal "Dard-e-dil Dard-e- jigar" by westernizing it.
Lata Mangeshkar played a major role in shaping up the careers of LP. She sang the maximum numbers of songs for them. She sounded extremely melodious under LP. Lata Mangeshkar and Laxmikant-Pyarelal shared a long, close and rewarding association.

Laxmikant Pyarelal is the name adopted by the Indian film composing duo of mandolin player Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar (born 1937; died May 25, 1998) and violinist Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (born 1940), who met at Lata Mangeshkar's music academy. Starting as studio musicians, they had their first credit as a music directing team with the 1963 film Parasmani and gained significant recognition the following year with Dosti. From there, the two were responsible for the music used in hundreds of Bollywood films starting running through the '90s. (They actually wrote both separately and together, but always credited their work jointly as Laxmikant Pyarelal.) After Kudalkar's death ended the duo, Sharma went into semi-retirement.

Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, was born on the day of Laxmi Pujan, on 3 November in 1937. Probably, because of the day of his birth, his parents named him as Laxmikant, after the goddess Laxmi. He spent his childhood amidst dire poverty in the slums of Vile Parle (East) in Mumbai. His father died when he was a child. Because of the poor financial condition of the family he could not complete his academic education either. Laxmikant's father's friend, a musician himself, advised Laxmikant and his elder brother to learn music. Accordingly, Laxmikant learned to play the mandolin and his elder brother learned to play the tabla. He spent two years in the company of the well-known mandolin player Hussain Ali. He began organising and performing in Indian Classical Instrumental Music concerts to earn some money. Later, in the 1940s, he also learned mandolin from Bal Mukund Indorker and violin from Husnalal (of the Husanlal Bhagatram fame). Laxmikant began his film career as a child actor in the films Bhakt Pundalik (1949 film) and Aankhen (1950 film). He also acted in some Gujarati films.

Pyarelal Nayyar
Pyarelal Nayyar (1899–1982) was the personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi in his later years. His sister Dr. Sushila Nayyar was the personal physician to Mahatma Gandhi.
He received his B. A. from University of Punjab and quit his M.A. studies during the Non-cooperation movement of 1920.
Freedom Struggle
Pyarelal was active in the freedom struggle, in the footsteps of Gandhi. He participated in the Salt March to Dandi in 1930.
Pyarelal was portrayed by Pankaj Kapur in the Richard Attenborough film Gandhi (1982).
Post Gandhi
Pyarelal continued his literary work on Gandhi until his last days.

Anand Bakshi (21 July 1930 – 30 March 2002) was a popular Indian poet and lyricist.
Biography
Early life
Anand Bakshi (Bakhshi Anand Prakash Vaid) was born in Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan, in 1930. His ancestors were Mohyal Brahmin from Kurree, near Rawalpindi, and had origins in Kashmir. His mother, Sumitra, died 1940, when he was 10. Bakshi's family migrated to India (Delhi) on 2 October 1947, in the aftermath of the partition, when he was 17 years old. The family arrived in Lucknow and later they traveled to Delhi and settled there.
Success
Anand Bakshi came to Hindi films to make a name for himself in writing and singing but ended up becoming more successful in writing lyrics. He got his break writing songs in a Brij Mohan's film titled, "Bhala Aadmi", 1958, acted by Bhagwan Dada. He wrote 4 songs in this film. His first song in this film was "Dharti Ke Laal Na Kar Itna Malaal" which was recorded on 9 Nov 1956.
He first found success with the film Mehendi Lagi Mere Haath, which was produced by (LimeLight), Music Kalyanji & Anandji Music Pub-HMV/Saregama 1962. Then he found big success in 1965 (Jab Jab Phool Khile) produced by Limelight and Music by Kalyanji Anandji and went on to work as a lyricist of over 3500 songs and 638 films in his career. He got his first time singing in a film was in Mom Ki Gudiya(1972). The first song he sang was a duet “Baaghon mein bahaar aayi hothon pe pukaar aayi”, along with Lata Mangeshkar for music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. He also sang the solo " Main dhoondh raha tha sapnon mein" from the same film. He also sang songs in 4 other films: Sholay (1975) where he sang the quawwali "Chand Sa Koi Chehera" along with Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Bhupinder; Maha Chor (1976); Charas (1976); and, Balika Badhu (1976).

Lata Mangeshkar (
pronunciation ) (born 28 September 1929) is an Indian playback singer, and occasional music-composer. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades. She has recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, though primarily in Marathi and Hindi. She is the elder sister of singers Asha Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. She is the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to have ever been awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
India's highest award in cinema the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was bestowed her in 1989 by the Government of India.

By the age of 12, his family's financial condition had deteriorated, which in turn forced him to earn money by playing in studios. Pyarelal then used to frequent visiting and playing the violin in studios such as Ranjit Studios, to earn money for his family. Laxmikant and Pyarelal met at Sureel Kala Kendra, a music academy for children, run by the Mangeshkar family. After she came to know about their financially poor backgrounds, Lata recommended their names to music directors like Naushad, S. D. Burman and C. Ramchandra. Laxmi-Pyare hit the big time with Rajshri Productions' 1964 film Dosti. The film had two newcomer heroes who never became popular, and the film was a success due to its music. In 1966 LP started cementing their place in Hindi Film Music. Non star cast film Farz was LP's first golden jubilee musical hit followed by big star cast films like Anita, Shagird, yet another Golden Jubilee hit, Patthar Ke Sanam, Night In London, Jaal and another evergreen musical hit Milan. The combo composed songs for more than 250 movies. Laxmi-Pyare composed Indian classical music as well as Western music. The film Karz is worth specially mentioning here where LP successfully, gave disco-like music, in this film they had experimented with a ghazal "Dard-e-dil Dard-e- jigar" by westernizing it. Lata Mangeshkar played a major role in shaping up the careers of LP. She sang the maximum numbers of songs for them. She sounded extremely melodious under LP. Lata Mangeshkar and Laxmikant-Pyarelal shared a long, close and rewarding association. -

Laxmikant Pyarelal is the name adopted by the Indian film composing duo of mandolin player Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar (born 1937; died May 25, 1998) and violinist Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (born 1940), who met at Lata Mangeshkar's music academy. Starting as studio musicians, they had their first credit as a music directing team with the 1963 film Parasmani and gained significant recognition the following year with Dosti. From there, the two were responsible for the music used in hundreds of Bollywood films starting running through the '90s. (They actually wrote both separately and together, but always credited their work jointly as Laxmikant Pyarelal.) After Kudalkar's death ended the duo, Sharma went into semi-retirement. -

Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, was born on the day of Laxmi Pujan, onHis father died when he was child. Laxmikant learnt to play the mandolin and his elder brother learnt to play the tabla. he mastered this art on his own. He began organising and performing in Indian Classical Instrumental Music concerts in order to earn some money. Later Laxmi did get the opportunity to learn the mandolin from known player Bal Mukund Indorker and also to learn the violin from Husnalal of the popular music duo Husanlal Bhagatram, especially in the 1940s.
Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, was born in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, on 3 September in 1940. He started learning violin at the age of 8 and practised it 8 to 12 hours daily. He learnt to play violin from a Goan musician named Anthony Gonsalves. The song "My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves" of the movie Amar Akbar Anthony is regarded as a tribute to Mr. Gonsalves. Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, was born on the day of Laxmi Pujan, onHis father died when he was child. Because of the poor financial conditions of the family he also could not even complete his academic education. Laxmikant's father's friend, a musician himself advised him and his elder brother to learn music. Laxmikant learnt to play the mandolin and his elder brother learnt to play the tabla. he mastered this art on his own. He began organising and performing in Indian Classical Instrumental Music concerts in order to earn some money. Later Laxmi did get the opportunity to learn the mandolin from known player Bal Mukund Indorker and also to learn the violin from Husnalal of the popular music duo Husanlal Bhagatram, especially in the 1940s.
Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, was born in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, on 3 September in 1940. He started learning violin at the age of 8 and practised it 8 to 12 hours daily. He learnt to play violin from a Goan musician named Anthony Gonsalves. The song "My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves" of the movie Amar Akbar Anthony is regarded as a tribute to Mr. Gonsalves. By the age of 12, his family's financial condition had deteriorated, which in turn forced him to earn money by playing in studios. Pyarelal then used to frequent visiting and playing the violin in studios such as Ranjit Studios, to earn money for his family.
Laxmikant and Pyarelal met at Sureel Kala Kendra, a music academy for children, run by the Mangeshkar family. After she came to know about their financially poor backgrounds, Lata recommended their names to music directors like Naushad, S. D. Burman and C. Ramchandra.
Laxmi-Pyare hit the big time with Rajshri Productions' 1964 film Dosti. The film had two newcomer heroes who never became popular, and the film was a success due to its music.

Starting as studio musicians, they had their first credit as a music directing team with the 1963 film Parasmani and gained significant recognition the following year with Dosti. From there, the two were responsible for the music used in hundreds of Bollywood films starting running through the '90s. (They actually wrote both separately and together, but always credited their work jointly as Laxmikant Pyarelal.) After Kudalkar's death ended the duo, Sharma went into semi-retirement.

More than 100 musicians rejuvenated the golden era of 60s and 70s by playing live, to the evergreen compositions of the legendary musical duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, at Maestros 2011 on Saturday, 6th May 2011 in Mumbai.
The concert was a dream come true for music lovers, as the Legendary music director Pyarelal of the music duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal performed live after twenty years on 80 evergreen songs with Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sudesh Bhosle, Shail Hada, Srikant Kulkarni and Vabhavari Joshi and more than 100 musicians with 60 chorus singers on stage. The musical night recreated the magic of Laxmikant- Pyarela's Unprecedented compositions as it included musicians who had composed the original song with the duo in the 70s playing live on stage.
