Khumbu (also known as the Everest Region) is a region of northeastern Nepal on the Nepalese side of Mount Everest. It is part of the Solukhumbu District, which in turn is part of the Sagarmatha Zone. Khumbu is one of three subregions of the main Khambu (specially Thulung) and Sherpa settlement of the Himalaya, the other two being Solu and Pharak. It includes the town of Namche Bazaar as well as the villages of Thame, Khumjung, Pangboche, Pheriche and Kunde. The famous Buddhist monastery at Tengboche is also located in the Khumbu.
The Khumbu's elevation ranges from 3,300 metres (11,000 feet) to the 8,848 m (29,029 ft) summit of Mount Everest, the highest place on Earth. The Khumbu region includes both Sagarmatha National Park (above Monju) and the Sagarmatha National Park Buffer Zone, between Lukla and Monju.
The Khumbu is a glacier believed to be the result of the last great Ice Age, ~500,000 years ago.
Lonely Planet has ranked Khumbu region in sixth best region in the world to travel.

At 6.45am on 18 April 2014, a chunk of ice broke off Everest's West Shoulder, triggering a huge avalanche that swept across the entire width of the Khumbu Icefall. 16 Sherpas and other Nepalis were killed. Protests followed over compensation and a week later all expeditions were cancelled. This eyewitness film includes footage of the icefall in the immediate aftermath, the poignant rescue operation and helicopter evacuations, and the protests and meetings that followed. Kenton Cool talks about the very real dangers of the Khumbu Icefall of Mount Everest
Visit us at www.whittakermountaineering.com. The Khumbu Icefall is one of the most dangerous parts of an Everest climb. Dave Hahn, who has been on 20 expeditions to 8000 meter peaks, takes us "through the popcorn" on his way to the top of the world.
For those who've heard about Khumbu Icefall but never been here. This is a small portion of the route set by icefall doctors. Taken on the way down on a training run.

Every step matters. The ice and snow beneath your feet could collapse at any moment. This is the location of the 2014 avalanche that killed 16 Nepalese guides. It's one of the most deadly parts of the Everest climb.

One of Nepal's most challenging treks (along with Sherpani Col), the Rolwaling to Khumbu trek over 5760m Tesi Lapsa La is seldom attempted and success is far from guaranteed. In September, 2016, the monsoon lingered for several extra weeks, complicating the passage. Nine days, 6,000 feet elevation gained, 17 monasteries viewed. And a bunch of other amazing things. We were there for NGO work in Solu and Chitwan, but added this trek from Phaplu to Tengboche for sightseeing and to spend time in the culture. It was fantastic. Route, planning and guides courtesy of International Sherpa Guides.
When my father first experienced the landscape of the Khumbu, Nepal, he penned the poem "Himalaya Downhill", which was published in 1978. This film combines his first expression of that place with mine, in the form of the timelapse photography I captured while on trek in 2011 and 2012. Thanks to Bethany Kwoka for the beautiful reading and Gingerr Shankar for the lovely music. Happy Father's Day!
