Kairana is a historical city and a municipal board in Prabudh Nagar district, that was created in September 2011. Prior to that Kairana was a tehsil of Muzaffarnagar district. Both the districts are located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Kairana is located at 29°24′N 77°12′E / 29.4°N 77.2°E / 29.4; 77.2.^[1] It has an average elevation of 242 metres (793 feet). It is also near of river Yamuna. This town is the birth place of a renowned School of Indian Classical Music called Kirana Gharana.

Kairana is a permanent seat of parliament of India and legislative assembly of Uttar Pradesh. Kairana is also having 6 courts (4 Regular and 2 fast track). Kairana is also a Tehsil of district Prabuddha Nagar and a municipal board. This Town is also having offices of all important government bodies like PWD office and guest house, LIC office, Block office, post office, police station, police circle office, two govt hospitals, Five nationalised banks etc.

Vijay Singh Pathik Rajkiya Mahavidyalaya is a Post Graduate Degree College in Kairana. The college was established by the great efforts of Chaudhary Hukum Singh, then Cabinet Minister, Uttar Pradesh in the year 1999. There is one more Degree College in Kairana "J.P Degree College of Commerce". This town also has four Intermediate Colleges which provide education up to senior secondary level and there are more than 20 schools for primary education. "Roorkee Engineering & Management Technology Institute" is proud of Kairana, situated on Kairana-Shamli Road (Part of Panipat-Khatima National Highway).^[2]

Kairana is also known for Musical education. "Kirana Gharana" is world famous for its "Khayal" singing. Ustad Kale Khan was the founder of Kirana Gharana. His son Ustad Abdul Karim Khan was also a great musician and "Khayal" singer of India and he has done great work for Indian classical music with Utsad Rahamat Khan of Gwalior Gharana. Great classical singer Pandit Bhim Sen Joshi took his basic music education from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan for 6 years in Kairana.

Monogram of HMV (Dog listening the gramophone) is also given by Kairana Musical Gharana. This was actually a painting created in 1899 by Francis Barraud when pet dog (Nipper) of Ustad Kale Khan used to listen the gramophone for hours.

During Ancient period, Kairana or " Karna Nagri" was the capital of Danveer Raja Karna's Anga Pradesh in Mahabharata. Some believers believe that Kairana name made from "Kai and Rana " means place of Rana Chauhan Gurjars. Rana Kalsa Raj Chauhan came with two brothers Rana Dev Raj Chauhan and Rana Deep Raj Chauhan from Ajmer, Rajasthan to village Panjeet near Kairana and founded the city Kairana. Descedent of Rana Kalsa Raj Chauhan called Kalshyan Gurjars.There are 84 villages of Kalshyan Chauhan Gautra of Gurjars near Kairana.

During Medieval period, Mughal Emperor Jahangir visited this place and has given a vibrant description in his autobiography, Tuzuk-e-jahangiri. The Emperor says On, Sunday, the 16th, I marched from Delhi, and on Friday the 21st, halted in the pargana of Kairana, This pargana is the native place of Muqarrab Khan. Its climate is equable and its soil good. . Muqarrab had made buildings and gardens there. As I had 'often heard praise of his garden, I wished much to see it. On Saturday, the 22nd, I and my ladies were much pleased in going round it Truly, it is a very fine and enjoyable garden. Within a masonry (pukhta, pucca) wall, flower-beds have been laid out to the extent of 140 bighas. In the middle of the garden he has constructed a pond, in length 220 yards, and in breadth 200 yards. In the middle of the pond is a miih-tiib terrace (for use in moonlight) 22 yards square.There is no kind of tree belonging to a warm or cold climate that is not to be found in it. Of fruit-bearing trees belonging to Persia I saw green pistachio-trees, and cypresses of graceful form, such as I have never seen before. I ordered the cypresses to be counted, and they came to 300. All round the pond suitable buildings have been begun and are in progress.^[3]

Demographics & People[link]

As of 2001^[update] India census,^[4] Kairana had a population of 73,046. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Kairana has an average literacy rate of 29%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 36%, and female literacy is 22%. In Kairana, 22% of the population is under 6 years of age. In terms of faith, 70% population is Muslim and 30% are Hindus.

This town is the birth place of famous freedom fighter Maulana Rahmatullah Kairanvi who participated in first freedom mutiny of India in 1857.^[5] In terms of culture, famous personalities of Kairana are Ustad Abdul Karim Khan & Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan of Kirana Gharana.^[6] In terms of literature, this town has produced many urdu poets. The most famous are Khawaja Aadil Husain, Safi Kairanvi, Master Tausif Alvi Aasi, Aashiq Kairanvi, Dr Tanvir Alvi, Jalil Ahmad Alvi, Muzaffar Razmi, Kausar Ali Zaidi, Dr Aiwaz Ali aiwaz. In Arabic literature, Maulana Wahiduzzaman Kairanvi has written Al-qamoos Al-jadeed, which is an Arabic-Urdu and Urdu-Arabic dictionary.^[7] In science, this town is the native place of Mohammad Faisal, In Bollywood, Munshi Munaqqa, the comedian and Hakim Kairanvi, the hair dresser of many stars are notable personalities from Kairana.IN history and archaeology (Saleem Ahmad AMU,Aligarh).

In terms of People's representatives, this town has produced many able politicians who representated Kairana Parliamentary and legislative constitueny many times and had always been the growth engines for the over all development of Kairana. The most famous among them are Chaudhary Hukum Singh,M.L.A. Kairana and Ex. minister Uttar Pradesh, Tabassum Begum M.P Kairana, Late SCh. Munawwar Hasan Ex. M.P. and Bashir Ahmad^{[disambiguation needed ]}, former MLA.^[8]

Arshad Hasan is the executive director at Democracy for America (DFA). Democracy for America is a progressive, people-powered political action committee headquartered in Burlington, Vermont.

Arshad was born on November 18, 1980. He grew up in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and attended Red River High School.

Arshad attended the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated in 2003 with a BA in Political Science. While at Penn, Arshad received the Senior Bowl Man Award,^[1] and was part of the Sphinx Honor Society^[2] and Oracle Senior Honor Society.^[3] While in college, Arshad worked as a paid canvasser and managed teams of paid canvassers on issue campaigns in Minnesota and Pennsylvania.^[4] While at Penn, Arshad also wrote for the school’s online newspaper, The Daily Pennsylvanian,^[5][6][7] and was part of the LGBT community.^[8]

Early political career[link]

Arshad traces his Governor Howard Dean roots to February 2003 when he founded one of the nation’s first organized Dean groups, Philly for Dean.^[9]

From 2003 to 2004 Arshad worked as a statewide organizer for Green Corps on citizen engagement and democracy.^[10] Arshad organized statewide environmental issue campaigns on behalf of Clear the Air in Arizona, Bluewater Network in Washington, and Oceana in Florida.

From April to August 2004, Arshad worked as an assistant canvass director for the Fund for Public Interest Research in Rochester, New York. At this job, Arshad recruited, trained, and managed staff to achieve fundraising and campaign goals for issue campaigns.

From August 2004 to November 2004, Arshad worked as an organizer for MoveOn PAC/Grassroots Campaigns, Inc.^[11] He worked in New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Democracy for America[link]

Arshad joined Democracy for America in April 2005. Democracy for America (DFA), is a people-powered progressive PAC founded by Governor Howard Dean in 2004. It is headquartered in Burlington, Vermont.^[12] Arshad says, "I decided that I wanted to do something that I felt passionate about and I felt passionate about making a difference. We actually deserve better than what we have, so that’s what I work on."^[13] Whenever possible, Arshad like to take off from DFA and work on campaigns with staffers he’s trained. In the 2006 general election, Arshad worked as the GOTV Director for Jerry McNerney for Congress.^[14][15]

Arshad started at DFA as a training coordinator, was later promoted to training director. At this position he built DFA’s political training program from scratch, training over 12,000 people online in 43 weekend "boot camps". He remained at this position until October 2007, when his boss unexpectedly left and he was promoted to executive director, the position he currently holds.^[16]

Since taking over, Arshad has doubled the revenue of DFA, achieved budgets, grown the donor and activist base, and raised the organization’s public profile. He currently is responsible for fundraising, managing 22 staff, building DFA’s network, making media appearances, and providing strategic direction for the organization. Outside of the office, Arshad likes to practice Bikram yoga and visit Burlington hot spots.^[17] He currently sits on the board of directors for Outright Vermont.^[18]

Arshad has been heavily involved with Netroots Nation, a nationwide non-profit that organizes the progressive online community, since 2007.^[19][20] Arshad currently sits on the Board of Directors.^[21] On campaigning, Arshad stated at a Netroots Nation panel in 2010: "You have to listen to voters. You must go out into the district and see what is important to people, whether it’s property taxes or schools or whatever? Organize people where they are. If you figure out what people want, you may find commonalities even in conservative districts."

In the same panel, he expands of some of DFA's philosophy: "We can call and email, whether we use carrots or sticks. We need to flex our muscles. We can be supportive, or we can be annoying, but we must be there. Primaries are the ultimate 'stick.' We can give pressure from the other side by supporting progressives who more accurately reflect our message."^[22]

Park 51 Islamic Center[link]

In late 2010, DFA and Arshad received a large amount of press when the controversy over the Park 51 Islamic Community Center in downtown Manhattan started. DFA, usually agreeing with its founder Howard Dean, split with the Governor when he stated his opposition to the building.^[23] The disagreement between Dean and Hasan turned into a conversation about resolving religious and cultural differences.^[24] Arshad and DFA used the disagreement as an opportunity to engage Americans in difficult discussions.^[25] After their conversation, Arshad sent an e-mail to DFA members encouraging similar conversations. In an open letter to DFA members, Arshad writes:

DFA Member - Over the last week we've heard a lot from DFA members around the country asking for action to protect the rights of religious freedom for all Americans and I couldn't agree more. I don't get upset much. I mean, I get ticked off at Republicans and Democrats (and at really bad customer service!), but that's why I work with you at DFA. Because when we get upset, we don't stew in it and hope it goes away. We do something about it. The controversy around the building of a Muslim Community Center at 51 Park in New York City should upset all of us. It definitely upsets me. Shortly after the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks, much of this country came together. But there were a number of other, smaller tragedies occurring all over the country as a result of the attacks. People who "looked like terrorists" were victims of harassment, intimidation, and outright violence. That includes me, and every member of my immediate family in different instances. My response was to protest the coming wars. My family did something different, though. They started going to Mosque. It did more than renew their faith -- it provided a sense of community and safety during a very dark time for us. But for the last nine years, at least, people have been trying to block the construction of mosques all over the country. Now, let's be clear, the subject of the highest profile Muslim structure, 51 Park in New York City, will have a basketball court and a culinary school. Two floors will have a prayer room. The other eleven will host movie nights, performances, group dinners, etc -- it's basically a Muslim YMCA, open to everyone. These moderate Muslims are doing everything we could ask of them. They're trying to build a bridge in the communities they live in, trying to show the world that Muslims are cool and interesting and diverse, and proving that being a Muslim does not equal being a terrorist. But they're being thrown under the bus by our elected leaders, egged on by some of the ugliest elements of the right-wing. Well-intentioned leaders of the Democratic Party are getting caught up in the fray as well, some of them seeking to find common ground with an implacable opposition. It's not helping. This isn't just a Manhattan problem. Right now, there is opposition to mosques in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Southern California, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, and dozens of other locations across our nation. Where would they move? If public pressure can be brought to bear to take down the most high-profile Muslim community center in liberal NYC, then these other places don't even have a chance, Ground Zero connection or not. Frankly, this isn't about Ground Zero. This is about America. This is about freedom. This is about people and there seems to be no place that Muslim people can go without being harassed. The harassment has to stop, and that starts with you and me. I think most people agree that Muslims have the right to worship. But these efforts to harass Muslims are based in fear, prejudice, and ignorance. Removing a community center doesn't solve these problems. But talking about religious freedom -- really engaging people -- can open people's minds, and blunt the prejudice. I pledge to do it myself. I pledge today to stand up for religious freedom right now. We cannot wait another day to defend the rights of all Americans to worship if they want, where they want, and when they want. I will not wait for the conversation to come to me; I will start the conversation now. Please join me in making the pledge to fight for our universal American values of acceptance and respect for religious freedom. I need you, in your community, to have those challenging conversations with people you know. Take the pledge right now. It's time to be pro-active in support of the values that define what we stand for and who we are as Americans. After you take the pledge, please follow up and share the conversations you've had. Roshan Ara Begum (1917 - December 6, 1982) was an Indian classical vocalist. In Pakistan she is revered as Mallika-e-Mauseeqi (Queen of Music). As the daughter of Ustad Abdul Haqq Khan, Roshan Ara linked through her cousin Ustad Abdul Karim Khan to Kirana Gharana.

Early life and training[link]

Born in Calcutta in or around 1917, Roshan Ara Begum visited Lahore during her teens to participate in musical soirées held at the residences of affluent citizens of Chun Peer in Mohalla Peer Gillaanian at Mochi Gate.

During her occasional visits to the city she also broadcast songs from the then All India Radio station, and her name was announced as Bombaywali Roshan Ara Begum. She had acquired this popular nomenclature because she shifted to Mumbai, then known as Bombay, in the late 1930s to live near Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, from whom she took lessons in Hindustani classical music for fifteen years.

Her performance in Chun Peer's abode in early 1941 pleasantly surprised local heavyweights and connoisseurs with her expertise in rendering classical compositions. In Mumbai, she lived in a sprawling bungalow with her husband Chaudhry Mohammed Hussain, a police officer.

Career[link]

Possessing a rich, mature and mellifluous voice that could easily lend itself to a wide range of intricate classical music pieces, Roshan Ara employed her natural talent in the promotion of the art, which requires a high degree of cultivation and training. Her singing features a full-throated voice, short and delicate passages of sur, lyricism, romantic appeal and swift taans. All these flourishes were combined in her unique style that reached its peak from 1945 to 1982. Her vigorous style of singing was interspersed with bold strokes and layakari.

Migrating to Pakistan in 1948 after the partition of India, Roshan Ara Begum settled in Lalamusa, a small town from which her husband hailed. Although far away from Lahore, the cultural centre of Pakistan, she would travel back and forth to participate in music and radio programmes. Visual and audio recording-devices have preserved the richness of Roshan Ara's music — which often overflowed with tonal modulations — its sweetness and delicacy of gamaks and her slow progression of raags. Roshan Ara Begum also sang some film songs, mostly under music composers like Anil Biswas, Feroze Nizami and Tassaduq Hussain. She sang for well-known films such as Pahali Nazar (1945), (Jugnu (1947), Qismat (1956), Roopmati Baazbahadur (1960) and Neela Parbat (1969).

She died in Pakistan in 1982 at the approximate age of sixty-five.

Mahmood Khan is a Pakistani born singer, song writer, sound engineer, music producer and film maker. Originally from Lahore, Khan was the first Pakistani national to achieve mainstream success within the Australia music industry.^{[citation needed]}

Early career[link]

After moving to Los Angeles, America, in the late 1980's, Khan was employed as a second engineer at Jam Power, a music production house. Khan was employed at Jam Power for 12 years and was promoted to chief sound engineer and music producer. During this period Khan undertook the Seth Riggz voice training program to develop his voice. Khan also developed his song writing skills and was successful in entering several song writing contests in Hollywood.^{[citation needed]} Through his position at Jam Power, Khan was involved in producing music for developing artists, and his knowledge of the music industry subsequently increased.

Solo albums[link]

In 1995 Khan released Fairytale, his first solo album in the US. The album was released on Khan's own record label. Whilst Fairytale was not a commercial success, it attracted the attention of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who approached Khan in 1997 to propose a collaboration.^{[citation needed]}

Collaboration with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan[link]

Khan's second solo album, Only One, was released in 1997 and featured Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's last known recordings before his death. Khan was the lead vocalist, song writer, producer and sound engineer on the Only One album. Solid Records and Magna Sound India released the album to international acclaim, with the tracks Teri Yaad and Janeman featuring in the Sanjay Dutt film, Kartoos.

Khan's next album, Alive, was released by Vanilla Music, Dubai. The lead track Panah was distributed by Magna Sound India; however, the album was not commercially viable and was considered "ahead of its time."^{[citation needed]}

Whilst in Pakistan in 2000, Khan learned how to produce video clips. Khan's first video clip promoted his single,'Tere Baghair', and received air play on national Pakistani television. Khan subsequently produced and directed the music videos accompanying his next two singles,'Enuff Misfortune', a reaction to 9/11 events, and Kissi Manzil, a tribute to the Pakistani public school he attended.

9th South Asian Federation Games[link]

In 2004, Khan was commissioned by the Government of Pakistan to compose the music for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 9th South Asian Federation Games, hosted in Islamabad.^{[citation needed]}

Modern Funk[link]

Khan is credited with developing a new genre of music, "Modern Funk",^{[citation needed]} in collaboration with his band, Mahmood Khan Funk/MKF.

In 2007, Khan relocated to Sydney, Australia, to undertake studies at Sydney Film School. In 2009, he successfully graduated from the institute.

Live at the Sydney Opera House[link]

Khan's performance at the Sydney Opera House was recorded and a live album of the concert was released. The track, Like the River, from this recording achieved a number one ranking on the mainstream Australian music charts.^{[citation needed]}

Charity fundraising[link]

During his time in Australia, Khan was involved in a charity fundraising effort to benefit the Red Cross Society. Along with 40 Australian artists, Khan recorded the track, We could be paradise. Khan was responsible for producing and directing the video clip that accompanied the track.^{[citation needed]}

In January 2010, Khan was invited to sing the Pakistani national anthem at the opening ceremony of the cricket test match between Australia and Pakistan.

In early 2011, Khan's YouTube channel had received over 50 million views. To showcase his most popular tracks, Khan was invited to perform live on Australian television, an occasion marking one of the few appearances of a Pakistani musician on a national, commercial broadcast channel.^{[citation needed]}

Zsolt Nagy, a Hungarian film maker, has produced a documentary, Journey of a new sound, focusing on Khan's life in Australia. The documentary highlights Khan's experiences of being challenged and rewarded during his time in Australia, and is described by Khan as an example of "how under extreme pressure, the human spirit is able to beat the odds".^{[citation needed]}

As of 2012, Khan has resided in Los Angeles, America, undertaking work on a feature film, Labrador. Khan is cited as the writer, director, producer and music director for the film. Flip Kobler, feted for developing the screenplays for The Lion King 2 and Beauty and the Beast, has been engaged to develop the screenplay for Labrador. Khan will collaborate with the Showdown Staging Company to produce the film.^{[citation needed]}
