Isle Royale
Isle Royale /ˌaɪl ˈrɔɪ.əl/ is an island of the Great Lakes, located in the northwest of Lake Superior, and part of the U.S. state of Michigan. The island and the 450 surrounding smaller islands and waters make up Isle Royale National Park.
The island is 45 miles (72 km) long and 9 miles (14 km) wide, with an area of 206.73 square miles (535.43 km2), making it the largest natural island in Lake Superior, the second largest island in the Great Lakes (after Manitoulin Island), the third largest in the contiguous United States (after Long Island and Padre Island), and the 33rd largest island in the United States. It is defined by the United States Census Bureau as Census Tract 9603 of Keweenaw County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census there was no permanent population. After the island was made a national park, some existing residents were allowed to stay, and a few leases are still in effect. Ferries from Michigan and Minnesota land at Rock Harbor on the eastern end of the island; this has a lodge, campground, and information center. Ferries from Minnesota also run to Windigo on the western end, which has a visitor center and campground.

The Ultimate Isle Royale trip! See moose, otter, fox, fishing, hiking, eagles, loons, beautiful scenery and more in this backpacking adventure. Kindness from boaters and a sailboat ride too! We went to Isle Royale for 6 days in August 2013 to celebrate our 10 year anniversaries. We took the Voyageur II out of Grand Portage, MN to Rock Harbor. There were stops in Windigo, McCargoe Cove, Belle Isle, the Tobin Harbor mail call dock, and Rock Harbor. Our itinerary was hiking from Rock Harbor to 3 Mile the first night, then 3 Mile thru Daisy Farm to Moskey Basin for nights 2 & 3, Moskey Basin to Chippewa Harbor for nights 4 & 5, and picked up in Chippewa Harbor by the Voyageur II back to Grand Portage. TRIP DETAILS location: Isle Royale National Park route: Todd Harbor - McCargoe Cove - West Chickenbone Lake - South Lake Desor - Washington Creek - Little Todd - Todd Harbor dates: 8/19 - 8/23 miles: 61 difficulty: hard As part of a service project on Isle Royale I worked with the park's trail crew brushing and repairing trails for 6 weeks. We worked 10 days on and had 4 days off. During our second 4 day weekend I quenched my thirst for adventure and set off to see the island. This documentary is only a shadow of my experience and falls short of capturing the splendor of the pristine wilderness found in the backcountry of Isle Royale. *This expedition was a true challenge of my limits and I would not recommend trying this without being in excellent physical shape. Isle Royale Chronicles vol. III
This is volume 3 in the chronicles of our Isle Royale adventures. I have been going to the Island since I was a kid and have traveled there every way possible except the Sea Hunter (next year) and have done everything from solo backpacking to staying in the lodge. The Island is a very special place to me and is a family tradition that has brought unfathomable joy. This year I was very thankful that my wife Sharsie joined me. We had an amazing time as always. Saw the most wildlife of any trip I have ever taken to the island... more than 4 times any previous trip for that matter. The lesson always comes through. Practice practice practice. The Ultimate Isle Royale trip! See moose, otter, fox, fishing, hiking, eagles, loons, beautiful scenery and more in this backpacking adventure. Kindness from boaters and a sailboat ride too!
We went to Isle Royale for 6 days in August 2013 to celebrate our 10 year anniversaries.
We took the Voyageur II out of Grand Portage, MN to Rock Harbor. There were stops in Windigo, McCargoe Cove, Belle Isle, the Tobin Harbor mail call dock, and Rock Harbor.
Our itinerary was hiking from Rock Harbor to 3 Mile the first night, then 3 Mile thru Daisy Farm to Moskey Basin for nights 2 & 3, Moskey Basin to Chippewa Harbor for nights 4 & 5, and picked up in Chippewa Harbor by the Voyageur II back to Grand Portage. The weather was fantastic with only 1 partial day of rain. We were there during the perseid meteor shower and saw many "falling stars". There were mosquitos only in the evenings at dusk, otherwise we did not even apply repellant.

We went to Isle Royale for 6 days in August 2013 to celebrate our 10 year anniversaries.

Ultimately, I got to experience Huginnin Cove, which was new to me... I will save Lane Cove for another trip.
Also, this was my first time to Chippewa Harbor. This leaves only Lane Cove to complete all the non-paddling campgrounds on the island.
Maybe I will make it back next year.
I love the Island.
