Kevin Starr is the California State Librarian Emeritus and University Professor of History at the University of Southern California, where he researches California history, history of American culture, urban history, and government. More than 30 years in the making, his eight-volume book series titled Americans and the California Dream, 1850--1915 captures the enigmatic blend of dreams and hardscrabble reality that loosely define California. Starr earned his master's and Ph.D. at Harvard University and his master's in library science at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated from USF in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in English.

Professor Kevin Starr gave a tailored lecture titled, “Postmodern California: A Pat Brown Perspective,” to a captivated audience in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles, on October 14. In attendance was Kathleen Brown, daughter of former Governor Pat Brown, and former treasurer of the State of CA, who introduced Kevin Starr, the President of Cal State LA, students and many life-long fans of Starr’s work.
Kevin Starr holds a B.A. from the University of San Francisco, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, and a Master of Library Science from UC Berkeley. From 1994 to 2004 he was state librarian of California. He is currently university professor and professor of history at the University of Southern California. His many articles and books, including his Americans and the California Dream series, have earned him a Guggenheim Fellowship, membership in the Society of American Historians, the Presidential Medallion from USC, the Centennial Medal from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard, and the Humanities Medal from the National Endowment of the Humanities.

Kevin Starr
Kevin Starr (born September 3, 1940) is an American historian, best known for his multi-volume series on the history of California, collectively called "Americans and the California Dream."
Life
Kevin Starr was born in San Francisco, California. Starr received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of San Francisco in 1962. From 1962 to 1964 he served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in the 68th Armored Brigade in then-West Germany. He then earned an MA degree in 1965 and PhD from Harvard University in 1969 in American Literature. He taught American Literature until 1973, and then moved to California where he has lived since 1974. He received an M.L.S. degree from the School of Librarianship, University of California, Berkeley, in 1974 while he was San Francisco City Librarian. From 1974 to 1989 he was professor or visiting lecturer at numerous California universities, including UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Riverside, Santa Clara University, the University of San Francisco, and Stanford University. In 1989 Starr became Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Southern California, and was promoted to University Professor of History in 1998. Starr sometimes teaches at the USC State Capital Center in Sacramento, California.

Pat Brown
Edmund Gerald "Pat" Brown, Sr. (April 21, 1905 – February 16, 1996) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 32nd Governor of California from 1959 to 1967. Born in San Francisco, Brown had an early interest in speaking and politics; he earned a law degree in 1927, and subsequently began legal practice. As district attorney for San Francisco, he was elected Attorney General of California in 1950 before becoming the state's Governor in 1959. As Governor, Brown embarked on massive projects building important infrastructure and redefined the state's higher education system. While running twice for President in 1960 and 1964, finishing second and first in the primaries, respectively, he was never a serious contender in the national conventions. While losing his bid for a third term in 1966 to future President Ronald Reagan, his legacy earns him regard as the builder of modern California. His son, Edmund G. 'Jerry' Brown, Jr., was and is the 34th and 39th Governor of California, and his daughter, Kathleen Brown, was the 29th California State Treasurer.
