5 Most Destructive
Hurricanes To
Ever Exist!
Transcript:
Mother Nature can be wondrous and beautiful but she can be absolutely evil.
Evil to the
point of taking thousands of lives in a single day for absolutely no reason
... And that for you is a
Hurricane. So prepare because here are 5 Most Destructive Hurricanes To Ever Exist!
Lets...
Begin!
1.
Hurricane Katrina
When Hurricane Katrina was approaching
New Orleans in
2005 as a
Category 5, a mandatory evacuation order was put into effect. It had lessened to a
Category 3 when it finally hit, but the high water levels breached the city and the results were devastating with 80 percent of the city underwater. Called “the single most catastrophic natural disaster in
U.S. history” by
FEMA,
Katrina resulted in 1,833 deaths (40% from drowning) and $
108 billion in damages.... Ughh...
DAMN!
2.
Hurricane Sandy
Causing $65 billion in damages, Hurricane Sandy was the second-most costly hurricane in U.S. history.
Sandy had actually decreased to a post-tropical cyclone in
2012 after wrecking Jamaica, Cuba and
Haiti; but that was enough to cause 13 foot surges up and down
New York City and the
Jersey Shore.
Beaches were wiped, electricity lost for days, 650,
000 homes destroyed and
117 people killed in the
Northeast.
Canada and the Caribbean lost an additional 69 lives also...
Yeah, crazy....
3.
Hurricane Gilbert
Hurricane Gilbert spanned
500 nautical miles wide, making it one of the largest ever seen in the
Atlantic basin. This Category 5 originated off the west coast of
Africa before destroying
Jamaica in
1988 or at least 80% of homes there. After barreling through the
Cayman Islands and
Mexico,
Gilbert became a series of tornadoes in
Texas. The total damage came to about $
5.5 billion while 318 people lost their lives.
4.
Hurricane Camille
Only three
Category 5 hurricanes have hit the
U.S. since
1900, and
Camille was one of them. The
Gulf Coast and
Virginia were struck in
1969 by 200-mph winds and massive flooding even though it had weakened to a tropical storm since landing in
Mississippi. The heavy rainfall caused flash floods and mudslides galore.
All in all, 256 people died and $1.4 billion plus was done in damage. But thanks do this unfortunate hurricane, the
Wind Scale was invented which is used to rank hurricanes so people are able to better prepare.
5.
Hurricane Hugo
When Hurricane Hugo hit
Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina in
1989, it was a
Category 4 with winds at 135 mph. There had not been such a powerful storm to hit the north east coast of
Florida since
Hazel in 1954.
Moving quickly at
30 mph,
Hugo continued to cause damage as it moved north of
Charleston. In the end, 50 people died and some $8 billion of damage had been done in the U.S. and the
Caribbean.
