THE NATIONAL ANTHEM CHALLENGE (No.38)

[The story behind this challenge...
I started learning national anthems (other than the Philippines' where I come from) in 2009 when I was invited to sing both the Philippines' and Singapore's national anthem for an event in Singapore. Unfortunately, close to the event day, the organisers decided to use a recording instead of a live performance (guess they were unsure of me - haha! but thank goodness). Nevertheless, I continued learning the Singapore national anthem. Inspired by learning the new language, I got interested since then to learn more, especially those of the countries I have visited and the ones in my travel bucket list - as if they will easily let me in at the airport if I can sing their national anthem. Haha!
For an unknown reason, I became unstoppable. I kept learning new ones. Though I was leisurely doing it in the beginning (and would even stop for months), I didn't realise I have already mastered over 20 anthems. And then I started learning more.
There's a little magic learning the language in every anthem. It is challenging yet very addictive. Besides, I get to understand its origin and the country's rich history as well; a totally different approach to studying the world history. Every anthem is unique and I have fun memories listening to them - while in the train, the bus or even walking home. The experience is special and I simply want to share this beautiful experience to everyone - the feeling of having the world live inside me.]
ABOUT THE ANTHEM
The "Mexican National Anthem" (Spanish: Himno Nacional Mexicano), also known as "Mexicans, at the cry of war" (Spanish: Mexicanos, al grito de guerra), is the national anthem of the United Mexican States. The anthem first started being used in 1854, although it was not officially adopted de jure until 1943. The lyrics of the national anthem, which allude to historical Mexican military victories in the heat of battle and including cries of defending the homeland, were composed by poet Francisco González Bocanegra after a Federal contest in 1853. Later in 1854 he asked, Jaime Nunó to compose the music which now accompanies González's poem. The anthem, consisting of ten stanzas and a chorus, effectively entered into use on September 16, 1854.

On the 13th of August 1521, Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor was captured. The indigenous allies of the Spaniards raided Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec empire.
They didnt know it at the time, but they had been liberated from one oppressor and fallen in the hands of a much more powerful authoritarian.
This was the beginning of three centuries of Spanish rule. The new colony was named Nueva España, New Spain.
The years that followed were devastating. The conquerors brought with them diseases unknown to the natives. The epidemics that broke out as well as the merciless workload imposed upon the natives dramatically diminished the Indian population. There were approximately 20 million Indians inhabiting this territory before the Conquest, and after just one century of Spanish rule there were only 1 million left!
Colonial society was highly stratified. Spaniards born in Spain, occupied the higher echelons, followed by Criollos, those born in Mexico from Spanish parents; Mestizos, the mix- blood offspring of Spaniards and Natives; Indios, Native Indians; Negros, African slaves.
Each socio-ethnic group had different rights and duties. The privileged were the peninsular Spaniards. Discontent steadily grew, especially amongst the Criollos, who were always treated as second-class subjects of the Spanish Crown. It is no surprise then, that Criollos were the spark that ignited the Independence movement.
In 1808, Napoleon invaded Spain, and decided to impose his brother José Bonaparte, as king of Spain (1808-1810). The Criollos found in this circumstance the opportunity to seek their independence form Spain.
Influenced by the concepts of liberty, equality and democracy proposed by the French philosophers Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, and by the war of Independence of the United States, they decided to start a revolt. It was 1810, and their plan was to start the war on the 2nd of October. Unfortunately, their plans were discovered in early September. The movement was in trouble. They had two alternatives; either abandon their plans, or move faster and start the revolt Worldwide (All) Australia

They didnt know it at the time, but they had been liberated from one oppressor and fallen in the hands of a much more powerful authoritarian. This was the beginning of three centuries of Spanish rule. The new colony was named Nueva España, New Spain. The years that followed were devastating. The conquerors brought with them diseases unknown to the natives. The epidemics that broke out as well as the merciless workload imposed upon the natives dramatically diminished the Indian population. There were approximately 20 million Indians inhabiting this territory before the Conquest, and after just one century of Spanish rule there were only 1 million left! Colonial society was highly stratified. Spaniards born in Spain, occupied the higher echelons, followed by Criollos, those born in Mexico from Spanish parents; Mestizos, the mix- blood offspring of Spaniards and Natives; Indios, Native Indians; Negros, African slaves. Each socio-ethnic group had different rights and duties. The privileged were the peninsular Spaniards. Discontent steadily grew, especially amongst the Criollos, who were always treated as second-class subjects of the Spanish Crown. It is no surprise then, that Criollos were the spark that ignited the Independence movement. In 1808, Napoleon invaded Spain, and decided to impose his brother José Bonaparte, as king of Spain (1808-1810). The Criollos found in this circumstance the opportunity to seek their independence form Spain. Influenced by the concepts of liberty, equality and democracy proposed by the French philosophers Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, and by the war of Independence of the United States, they decided to start a revolt. It was 1810, and their plan was to start the war on the 2nd of October. Unfortunately, their plans were discovered in early September. The movement was in trouble. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM CHALLENGE (No.38) Country: Mexico (officially the United Mexican States) [The story behind this challenge... I started learning national anthems (other than the Philippines' where I come from) in 2009 when I was invited to sing both the Philippines' and Singapore's national anthem for an event in Singapore. Unfortunately, close to the event day, the organisers decided to use a recording instead of a live performance (guess they were unsure of me - haha! but thank goodness). Nevertheless, I continued learning the Singapore national anthem. Inspired by learning the new language, I got interested since then to learn more, especially those of the countries I have visited and the ones in my travel bucket list - as if they will easily let me in at the airport if I can sing ...

I started learning national anthems (other than the Philippines' where I come from) in 2009 when I was invited to sing both the Philippines' and Singapore's national anthem for an event in Singapore. Unfortunately, close to the event day, the organisers decided to use a recording instead of a live performance (guess they were unsure of me - haha! but thank goodness). Nevertheless, I continued learning the Singapore national anthem. Inspired by learning the new language, I got interested since then to learn more, especially those of the countries I have visited and the ones in my travel bucket list - as if they will easily let me in at the airport if I can sing their national anthem. Haha!
For an unknown reason, I became unstoppable. I kept learning new ones. Though I was leisurely doing it in the beginning (and would even stop for months), I didn't realise I have already mastered over 20 anthems. And then I started learning more.
There's a little magic learning the language in every anthem. It is challenging yet very addictive. Besides, I get to understand its origin and the country's rich history as well; a totally different approach to studying the world history. Every anthem is unique and I have fun memories listening to them - while in the train, the bus or even walking home. The experience is special and I simply want to share this beautiful experience to everyone - the feeling of having the world live inside me.]

The "Mexican National Anthem" (Spanish: Himno Nacional Mexicano), also known as "Mexicans, at the cry of war" (Spanish: Mexicanos, al grito de guerra), is the national anthem of the United Mexican States. The anthem first started being used in 1854, although it was not officially adopted de jure until 1943. The lyrics of the national anthem, which allude to historical Mexican military victories in the heat of battle and including cries of defending the homeland, were composed by poet Francisco González Bocanegra after a Federal contest in 1853. Later in 1854 he asked, Jaime Nunó to compose the music which now accompanies González's poem. The anthem, consisting of ten stanzas and a chorus, effectively entered into use on September 16, 1854.

On the 13th of August 1521, Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor was captured. The indigenous allies of the Spaniards raided Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec empire.
They didnt know it at the time, but they had been liberated from one oppressor and fallen in the hands of a much more powerful authoritarian.
This was the beginning of three centuries of Spanish rule. The new colony was named Nueva España, New Spain.
The years that followed were devastating. The conquerors brought with them diseases unknown to the natives. The epidemics that broke out as well as the merciless workload imposed upon the natives dramatically diminished the Indian population. There were approximately 20 million Indians inhabiting this territory before the Conquest, and after just one century of Spanish rule there were only 1 million left!
Colonial society was highly stratified. Spaniards born in Spain, occupied the higher echelons, followed by Criollos, those born in Mexico from Spanish parents; Mestizos, the mix- blood offspring of Spaniards and Natives; Indios, Native Indians; Negros, African slaves.
Each socio-ethnic group had different rights and duties. The privileged were the peninsular Spaniards. Discontent steadily grew, especially amongst the Criollos, who were always treated as second-class subjects of the Spanish Crown. It is no surprise then, that Criollos were the spark that ignited the Independence movement.
In 1808, Napoleon invaded Spain, and decided to impose his brother José Bonaparte, as king of Spain (1808-1810). The Criollos found in this circumstance the opportunity to seek their independence form Spain.
Influenced by the concepts of liberty, equality and democracy proposed by the French philosophers Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, and by the war of Independence of the United States, they decided to start a revolt. It was 1810, and their plan was to start the war on the 2nd of October. Unfortunately, their plans were discovered in early September. The movement was in trouble. They had two alternatives; either abandon their plans, or move faster and start the revolt Worldwide (All) Australia

The magnificent Catedral Metropolitana with its massive dimensions and fine stone masonry dominates the square, with equal prominence being given to the Palacinio Nacional, governmental seat of the Mexican President. In 1519, when the Spanish conquerors reached Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec kingdom, they discovered a lagoon paradise with floating gardens, Xochimilco, a labyrinth of lakes and canals, which today can be explored by boat. Known as the Pearl Of The Pacific, Acapulco is a world famous holiday resort of the rich and famous where luxury liners dock each day and endless golden sands beckon a swim under the Caribbean sun. Each evening, the famous cliff jumpers of Acapulco congregate when, from a height of 42 metres, they jump fearlessly from the top of the La Quebrada Cliff into the narrow bay below. In the legendary ruins of Palenque, numerous monuments of the Maya culture can be found such as a palace, and several pyramids and temples. From the air, there is a unique view of the lush growth of the impenetrable forests around Palenque, and of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul. Chichen Itza is thought to have been built by the Mayas around 450 AD and over 500 years later the fighting TOLTEKEN took over the deserted city, which led to two hundred years of prosperity. Located in the north, Tequila is situated at the foot of the likewise named volcano and is world famous because it is here that the Mexican national drink is produced. But Mexico is much more than a drink…it is a feast for all the senses!

Mexico City is a vivid metropolis and cosmopolitan city situated on a plateau in the central highlands at an altitude of 2, 286 metres, where the food is spicy and the Tequila flows freely! The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings.
Until the Spanish conquest, the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors.
Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took 250 years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the heart of the city have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico and has resulted in a synthesis of both old and new architectural styles.
An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a wonderful panoramic view that includes the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Juárez Monument.
Located 50 kilometres from Mexico City are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies. At its zenith in 500 A.D., it was as large as Rome and its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times. In 1988 ,Unesco attributed this complex as being 'one of the most important cultural centres of mankind'.
The author Pablo Neruda once said: 'No other land on Earth possesses such remarkable human profoundness than Mexico and its inhabitants'. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico has to be at the top of the list!

El cuento de “La lengua de las mariposas” de Manuel Rivas trata sobre la relación de un niño y su maestro durante los meses previos del Alzamiento Nacional del 17 y 18 de julio de 1936 que dieron comienzo a la guerra civil española. Empieza con el niño, Moncho (Manuel Lozano), quien tiene miedo de ir a la escuela ya que lo habían asustado al decirle que los maestros golpeaban a los estudiantes. Moncho no quiere ir a la clase porque teme que el maestro le pegue, como era costumbre en la educación represiva de la época. Pero don Gregorio no es así. Su maestro, don Gregorio, es un maestro que utiliza el método de observación como enseñanza. Durante estos sucesos, está ocurriendo la guerra en Madrid, y en el cuento, relatan sobre las bases políticas del pueblo.
Don Gregorio le enseña muchas cosas a Moncho, principalmente sobre la libertad. Cuando los fascistas sublevados en julio de 1936 se hacen con el gobierno civil y militar provincial, se llevan a varios republicanos en un camión, y también al maestro. En el camión, se encontraban varios republicanos, pero en particular se encontraba don Gregorio. Los padres de Moncho, especialmente su madre, le exhortaba a su familia que gritaran a los republicanos, mostrando su “postura” política. Le gritaban "¡Rojos! ¡Asesinos!" Pero al final, Moncho se fue corriendo detrás del camión, tirando piedras y gritándole a don Gregorio: “¡Tilonorrinco! ¡Espiritrompa!” Estas fueron dos cosas que Moncho aprendió con su maestro.
