THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL
SHOT LIST.
ACROSS WISCONSIN MONDAY MORNING, SAME-SEX COUPLES WAITED FOR CLERKS OFFICES TO
OPEN FOR BUSINESS. THEY
WANTED TO BE AMONG THE
FIRST TO
SIGN UP FOR THE STATE'S DOMESTIC PARTNER REGISTRY.
(
SOT:
Gary Waymire-Cooper/DOMESTIC PARTNER)
(2:08) This is like a milestone in our lives to step forward to give us some recognition as couple and a family here in Wisconsin.
GARY AND FORREST WAYMIRE-COOPER HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR NEARLY FOUR YEARS. THEY
SAY THE LEGAL PROTECTIONS THEY GAINED MONDAY ARE IMPORTANT. FORREST IS HIV-POSITIVE AND GARY HAS HAD TROUBLE VISITING HIM IN THE HOSPITAL IN THE
PAST. BUT THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THE REGISTRY HAS LIMITS.
(SOT:
Forrest WAYMIRE-COOPER/DOMESTIC PARTNER)
(3:38) We have to take what we can get right now.
Unfortunately.
THE CENSUS BUREAU SAYS THERE ARE 14-THOUSAND SAME-SEX COUPLES IN WISCONSIN.
IT'S THE FIRST STATE TO GRANT SUCH RIGHTS DESPITE A
BAN ON
GAY MARRIAGE OR ANY SIMILAR RELATIONSHIP IN THE STATE CONSTITUTION.
(SOT:
Katie Belanger/Exec Dir
Fair Wisconsin)
(7:10) This is a very critical set of protections for same sex couples.
Things like hospital visitation.
End of life decision making. The ability to take leave for a sick or injured partner.
(SOT:
Josie Osborne/DOMESTIC PARTNER)
(9:35) But now that it went through we're all just relieved that it made up a little bit for the pain that we felt when Wisconsin passed the anti-gay marriage and partnership amendment.
(SOT: kim cosier /DOMESTIC PARTNER)
(9:56) We look forward to a time in the state when we can actually be married. Like i said we were married in
British Columbia last year and made the choice to get married in
Canada because it's a whole country that actually is fair minded.
A GROUP OF SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES
WANT THE DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP HAS ASKED THE STATE SUPREME COURT TO INVALIDATE THE REGISTRY. THE COURT HASN'T SAID WHETHER IT WILL TAKE THE
CASE.
