The poverty threshold or poverty line is the minimum level of income deemed adequate in a particular country. In practice, like the definition of poverty, the official or common understanding of the poverty line is significantly higher in developed countries than in developing countries. In October 2015, the World Bank updated international poverty line to US$1.90 a day. In 2008, the World Bank came out with a figure (revised largely due to inflation) of $1.25 at 2005 purchasing-power parity (PPP). The common international poverty line has in the past been roughly $1 a day. At present the number of people living under extreme poverty is likely to fall below 10% according to the World Bank projections released in 2015.
Determining the poverty line is usually done by finding the total cost of all the essential resources that an average human adult consumes in one year. The largest of these expenses is typically the rent required to live in an apartment, so historically, economists have paid particular attention to the real estate market and housing prices as a strong poverty line affector. Individual factors are often used to account for various circumstances, such as whether one is a parent, elderly, a child, married, etc. The poverty threshold may be adjusted annually.

Poverty in America is probably not what you think. Emmy Award-winning producer Linda Midgett shows us in this groundbreaking documentary a new face of poverty in America. About 50 million people in the United States live below the poverty line (In 2014- $23,850 for a family of 4) and one in four American children lives in poverty. But what is poverty in America? What defines "the line" and how can the church and community make a difference?
The official poverty line, as I wrote yesterday, is a dated and crude statistical concept that in many ways fails to capture America's historical success at fighting economic need. It was based on the cost of food in 1963, mostly because the Department of Agriculture had some idea of what a basic grocery budget should look like, whereas there wasn't any real agreement on what families needed to spend on other essentials. Since then, it's mostly just been adjusted for inflation. People living below a poverty line don't have enough to meet their basic needs. Countries typically define national poverty lines, and we use the lines of a group of the poorest countries to define the international extreme poverty line of $1.90 per day. More at http://worldbank.org/poverty

For nearly 18 years, the Neufelds ministered to their ?big-hearted neighbors, ? most of whom lived below the poverty line. The stories in this collection recount the struggles and giftedness of the North Enders the Neufelds have known and served. Their vivid experiences of love and friendship powerfully demonstrate that the Good News to the poor is also Good News to the rich.

While 36 million Americans live below the poverty line, a much smaller percent of Western Europeans struggle with the same problem. Samuel J. Eldersveld seeks to discover why this variance exists by exploring various theories. To explain the larger percentage of American poor, he tackles the history of poverty in each of the featured countries along with examining the 'system theory' approach, the role of values, the political elite character in the United States compared to Europe, and the differential robes of the business elites in these countries. Poor America follows the issue of pover...

Angus Deaton has won the Nobel Prize in economics for his work on consumption and the way poverty is measured, notably in India. It is said that India changed its methodology for measuring poverty thanks to research from the likes of Deaton. Poverty alleviation is one of the fundamental objectives of a welfare state. Hence it is very important that one defines poverty in an acceptable manner. Correct definitions of poverty lead to better targeting of welfare measures and enhance the efficiency of poverty alleviation. Poverty has a special place in CSE syllabus also - “Issues relating to poverty and hunger; Welfare schemes for vulnerable sections of the population; Development processes and the development industry; Issues relating to development and management of social sector”- GS Paper...
Before heading off to another $12/hr. job, this old depressed collapsitarian sounds off about how he manages to survive just fine on $8K per year.
As the cliché goes, the poor are always with us. But just how many of them are there? It depends who you ask. Last weekend, after spending an hour or two at a poverty simulation workshop, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying declared that a three-generation family of five should be able to survive on HK$9,000 a month and still put money aside for a rainy day. Netizens and critics were quick to respond, saying, and this is at the polite end of their remarks, that he was more than a bit out of touch. Other officials insist many of elderly people are secret millionaires, “asset rich but cash poor”. The government also says that there are far fewer residents living in subdivided flats than the widely quoted estimate of 190,000 people. Meanwhile the waiting list for public housing was at a record ...
