From extremely humble beginnings as a poor farmer in remote southeastern Turkey, Dogan Uygur scrapped and scraped his way through primary school to earn a scholarship to a technical university in Istanbul, then eventually made his way to the United States.
Dogan’s inspiring experience reads like a movie - a poor immigrant comes to these shores with little more than a fierce determination to make a life for himself and, through hard work and well-timed assistance from key individuals along the way, seizes the moment when opportunity arises and becomes a living embodiment of the American Dream.
In this interview with his son, The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur, Dogan talks about:
- The hardscrabble life growing up as a rural olive and grape farmer in Kilis, Turkey
- Breaking out of the rigid Turkish class system he was born into

İlkokulu Siirt, Ezine ve İntepe'de okudu. 1938 yılında ilkokul öğrencisiyken tiyatroya başladı. Sarıyer, Çanakkale ve Manisa'da ortaokulu tamamladı. Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi'nin Heykel Bölümü'ne girdi. Fakat mezun olamadı. İsmail Dümbüllü tarafından keşfedildi. 1949 yılında Nejat Uygur Tiyatrosu'nu kurdu. Amatör ve profesyonel olarak 60 yıldan uzun süre tiyatro yaptı. 50'den fazla ödülü var. 2 kez ABD, 4 kez Avrupa turnesine çıktı. 35 yıla yakın bir süre Anadolu turnesi yaptı. 1998 yılında Kültür Bakanlığı tarafından 'Devlet Sanatçısı' unvanı verildi. 1950 yılında Necla Uygur ile evlendi. Beş çocukları oldu. Çocuklarından Süheyl ve Behzat Uygur, babaları gibi tiyatrocu. 10 Eylül 2007 tarihinde kısmi felç geçirdi.
18 Kasım 2013 tarihinde İstanbul'da vefat etti.

Uyghurs
The Uyghurs /ˈwiːɡər/ (Uyghur: ئۇيغۇر, ULY: Uyghur ;[ʔʊjˈʁʊː]; Old Turkic: 
;Chinese: 维吾尔族; pinyin: Wéiwúěr zú) are a Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia. Today, Uyghurs live primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, where they are one of 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities.
An estimated 80% of Xinjiang's Uyghurs live in the southwestern portion of the region, the Tarim Basin. Outside Xinjiang, the largest community of Uyghurs in China is in Taoyuan County, in south-central Hunan. Outside of China, significant diasporic communities of Uyghurs exist in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, and in Turkey. Smaller communities are found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
They practice Islam and are a physically diverse ethnic group ranging from Western Eurasian (Europeans, Middle Eastern) to a more mixed race and East Asian appearance.

Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi'nin Heykel Bölümü'ne girdi. Fakat mezun olamadı. İsmail Dümbüllü tarafından keşfedildi. 1949 yılında Nejat Uygur Tiyatrosu'nu kurdu. Amatör ve profesyonel olarak 60 yıldan uzun süre tiyatro yaptı. 50'den fazla ödülü var. 2 kez ABD, 4 kez Avrupa turnesine çıktı. 35 yıla yakın bir süre Anadolu turnesi yaptı. 1998 yılında Kültür Bakanlığı tarafından 'Devlet Sanatçısı' unvanı verildi. 1950 yılında Necla Uygur ile evlendi. Beş çocukları oldu. Çocuklarından Süheyl ve Behzat Uygur, babaları gibi tiyatrocu. 10 Eylül 2007 tarihinde kısmi felç geçirdi.
18 Kasım 2013 tarihinde İstanbul'da vefat etti.
