Urban Cowboy is a 1980 American western romantic drama film about the love-hate relationship between Buford Uling Davis 'Bud' (John Travolta) and Sissy (Debra Winger). The movie captured the late 1970s/early 1980s popularity of Country Music with John Travolta's starring after Grease and Saturday Night Fever.
Mickey Leroy Gilley (born March 9, 1936) is an American country music singer and musician. Although he started out singing straight-up country and western material in the 1970s, he moved towards a more pop-friendly sound in the 1980s, bringing him further success on not just the country charts, but the pop charts as well. Among his biggest hits are "Room Full of Roses," "Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time," and the remake of the Soul hit "Stand by Me". He is also the cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl McVoy, Jim Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Gilley is a licensed pilot, who holds an instrument rating with commercial pilot privileges for multi-engine airplanes, as well as private pilot privileges for single engine aircraft.
"Stand by Me" is a song originally performed by Ben E. King and written by King, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller, inspired by the spiritual "Lord Stand by Me,"[1] plus two lines rooted in Psalms 46:2--3. There have been over 400 recorded versions of the song.

Urban Cowboy
Urban Cowboy is a 1980 American western romantic drama film about the love-hate relationship between Buford Uan "Bud" Davis (John Travolta) and Sissy (Debra Winger). The movie captured the late 1970s/early 1980s popularity of country music. It was John Travolta's third major acting role after Saturday Night Fever and Grease. Much of the action centers around activities at Gilley's Club, a honky tonk in Pasadena, Texas.
Historical background and production
The film's screenplay was adapted by Aaron Latham and James Bridges from an article by the same name in Esquire Magazine written by Latham. The original Esquire article centered on the romance between two Gilley's regulars named Dew Westbrook and Betty Helmer. Westbrook and Helmer's real life relationship became the inspiration for the on screen romance between John Travolta and Debra Winger's characters "Bud" and "Sissy". The movie was directed by Bridges. Some film critics referred to the movie as a country music version of Saturday Night Fever. The film grossed almost $47 million in the United States alone, and temporarily recovered Travolta from the flop Moment by Moment (1978), but the film was nowhere near as successful as either Saturday Night Fever ($94 million) or Grease ($188 million).

Bull riding
Bull riding refers to rodeo sports that involve a rider getting on a large bull and attempting to stay mounted while the animal attempts to buck off the rider.
In the American tradition the rider must stay atop the bucking bull for eight full seconds to count as a qualified ride. The rider tightly fastens one hand to the bull with a long braided rope. It is a risky sport and has been called "the most dangerous eight seconds in sports."
Outside of the USA, bull riding traditions with varying rules and histories also exist in Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Brazil, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia, with the majority of them following similar rules, especially with the Professional Bull Riders organization.
History
The taming of bulls has ancient roots in contests dating as far back as Minoan culture. Bull riding itself has its direct roots in Mexican contests of equestrian and ranching skills now collectively known as charreada. During the 16th century, a hacienda contest called jaripeo developed. Originally considered a variant of bull fighting, in which riders literally rode a bull to death, the competition evolved into a form where the bull was simply ridden until it stopped bucking. By the mid-19th century, charreada competition was popular on Texas and California cattle ranches where Anglo and Hispanic ranch hands often worked together.

With a story, cast, and setting that were essentially Saturday Night Fever country-style, Urban Cowboy was poised to be a summer 1980 hit. Although its box office did not live up to Fever's legacy, Urban Cowboy did spawn a soundtrack album of country-and-western hits and helped spur a Western fashion vogue; people from all regions began sporting cowboy boots, and mechanical bulls started replacing passé disco floors. The first of Travolta's many comebacks, Urban Cowboy provided the star with a more "manly" image after his Moment by Moment (1978) fiasco, but it was neophyte co-star Winger who got even better notices. "You a real cowboy?" John Travolta traded disco for a mechanical bull in this adaptation by James Bridges and Aaron Latham of Latham's article on Western nightlife. Texas country boy Bud (Travolta) moves to Houston to work on an oil rig with his Uncle Bob (Barry Corbin), and he swiftly becomes indoctrinated in the nighttime rituals of drinking, dancing, and showing off cowboy duds at Gilley's, the enormous local honkytonk. There he meets and marries the sassy Sissy (Debra Winger), but the honeymoon quickly ends when Sissy starts spending too much time learning the men-only skill of mechanical bull-riding from ex-con Wes (Scott Glenn); Bud throws her out and hooks up with slumming Pam (Madolyn Smith). Under the paternal tutelage of Uncle Bob, Bud then learns not only how to master the bull but also what it takes to be a real man rather than just an ersatz cowboy. With a story, cast, and setting that were essentially Saturday Night Fever country-style, Urban Cowboy was poised to be a summer 1980 hit. Although its box office did not live up to Fever's legacy, Urban Cowboy did spawn a soundtrack album of country-and-western hits and helped spur a Western fashion vogue; people from all regions began sporting cowboy boots, and mechanical bulls started replacing passé disco floors. The first of Travolta's many comebacks, Urban Cowboy provided the star with a more "manly" image after his Moment by Moment (1978) fiasco, but it was neophyte co-star Winger who got even better notices. With its Western milieu and retro view of relationships, Urban Cowboy stands as a sign of the nascent Reagan era, as '70s icon Travolta learned bull-riding himself and replaced his white polyester with a black Stetson.

Things are much further away than they seem from looking on a map. it will take you at least a 15-30 minute walk to get to a different hotel than your own. The Las Vegas strip is 4 miles. Find the shortcuts between hotels (Bally’s to Paris). Bring Comfortable Footwear. Leave the 4 inch heels at home, or have a second pair. So we aren't in Canada no more! This weekend we actually escaped to Las Vegas so we are going to be spending three days just enjoying winter in the desert and doing cool stuff. And today we're walking down the strip and we're going to show you some of the sights. And the best part - no winter parka right now.
Enough walking for a while. I'm starving. Let's get some dinner. We're going to Shake Shack.
Tell, me. Tell, me! You know what? Nobody does fast food like Americans. They've got it down to a science. It's absolutely unhealthy but so delicious.
We're going to head back to the hotel and get ready for a show. We're going to be seeing the Michael Jackson Show at the Mandalay Bay but unfortunately we can't bring any cameras in there so we won' t be able to show you that but maybe after the show we'll hit the town again and show you the sights. Not maybe! Definitely!
It is so sad to be leaving but it is our last night in Las Vegas so we're going to go out and try and see as much as we can this evening. Let's go wild. Let's gamble.

What would a trip to Vegas be like without a little gambling? Sam, even looks like an old gambler today with that hat. Oh, I do. Guess what? We're such cheapskates we're playing with pennies. We're going to the penny machine. They don't even have pennies in Canada anymore, so let's use these American pennies up.
Shiver me timbers. I'm playing a pirate game. I'm going to win me some money.
Tell us? Alright, I was a pretty lousy pirate, so I'm going to try my luck with this Owl game. Hoot! Hoot!

So we're here at the Bellagio for the water show. And they have a lot of frequent shows in the evening so we're just waiting for it to start.
So we are now at the Cosmopolitan and we are visiting one of the coolest bars in all of Las Vegas. This behind me is the Chandelier.

Las Vegas! Vegas, Baby! With a weekend to explore Las Vegas we arrived hitting the ground running wanting to pack in as much as we possibly could over a short period of time. Nigh life, music, gambling, entertainment, dancing, walking the Strip and shows in the evening. Driving luxury cars, helicopter tours, exploring the Grand Canyon and marveling at Red Rock Canyon by day. Las Vegas was full of surprises. The following is a Las Vegas travel guide to experience the most out of your vacation to Sin City. It is the best things to do on Las Vegas Strip along with day excursions outside of the city limits. As they say, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
So we aren't in Canada no more! This weekend we actually escaped to Las Vegas so we are going to be spending three days just enjoying winter in the desert and doing cool stuff. And today we're walking down the strip and we're going to show you some of the sights. And the best part - no winter parka right now.
Enough walking for a while. I'm starving. Let's get some dinner. We're going to Shake Shack.
Tell, me. Tell, me! You know what? Nobody does fast food like Americans. They've got it down to a science. It's absolutely unhealthy but so delicious.
We're going to head back to the hotel and get ready for a show. We're going to be seeing the Michael Jackson Show at the Mandalay Bay but unfortunately we can't bring any cameras in there so we won' t be able to show you that but maybe after the show we'll hit the town again and show you the sights. Not maybe! Definitely!
It is so sad to be leaving but it is our last night in Las Vegas so we're going to go out and try and see as much as we can this evening. Let's go wild. Let's gamble.

Things YOU need to know before you travel to Las Vegas Nevada. Las Vegas is Big, so is the Strip. Things are much further away than they seem from looking on a map. it will take you at least a 15-30 minute walk to get to a different hotel than your own. The Las Vegas strip is 4 miles. Find the shortcuts between hotels (Bally’s to Paris). Bring Comfortable Footwear. Leave the 4 inch heels at home, or have a second pair. Use the free trams (Luxor to Excalibur) (Monte Carlo to Bellagio). The monorail is pretty convenient too. Don’t try to hail Taxis on the strip, they won’t stop, it’s illegal. Go to a hotel taxi stand to get a taxi, be prepared to wait in line. And traffic at 6pm is awful
2. Downtown Las Vegas
Is really far. $30 cab ride
But the Freemont Street Experience is cool
And it’s neat to see “old” vegas
People say the best slot machine odds are downtown (worst at the airport)
3. Hotels
Don’t pick the cheapest hotels… You’ll regret that $25/night rate.
If you want to be in the “middle” stay around Caesars Palace
Resort fees… ugh!
Many strip hotels are charging for parking, loyalty program might get it for free
If you like “peace and quiet” pick a non-casino hotel. I usually stay at Marriott properties a block or two off the strip, no resort or parking fees.
4. Gambling
Learn the games, lots of free classes at Casinos
Join the Player’s Clubs
Lots of free perks
Front of line, free parking, discounts on shows, food, etc
5. It’s the desert
Drink plenty of water, it’s dry all the time
Buy the water at a supermarket. Can be $6 a bottle at the casino
In the summer its really hot!
Wear suncreen
In the winter it can be really cold and windy! Bring a jacket Nov-Feb.
The casinos are always super cold… so bring a light jacket or sweater even in summer
6. When to go?
When there isn’t a convention in town… check the convention calendars
Mid-week and Christmas is also a slow time
Vegas doesn’t close… ever it’s 24/7
7. Food
Is awesome
Do some research before you go -- there are lots of good restaurants, but they aren’t the obvious ones
For example, Bouchon is hidden up some random elevator in the Venetian
If there’s a famous restaurant somewhere else in the world that you’ve wanted to eat at, it might very well have a location in Vegas
For Example HofBrauHaus from Munich
Can be expensive
But can be cheap. You can still find a T-bone steak for $4.95
Cheapest is usually downtown
Chinatown has good eats too
Breakfast is available 24/7
7.1. Buffets are great,
But just once a day
Twice a day is overdoing it!
The time at the end of lunch right before dinner is the best deal
IF you time it perfectly with the line
But the lines can be LONG, think hours, 1, 2, 3 hours even.
Eat dinner at 5pm or 8:30pm to avoid the rush.
7.2. You can drink alcohol anywhere
Leaving a hotel? Ask for a to-go cup and drink on the sidewalk
8. ATMs are super expensive
Standard Vegas ATM fee is like $6
Bring Cash
Bank ATMS are hard to find
9. Smoking
Seems to be allowed everywhere
larger megaresorts have higher ceilings and good filtration systems,
but the smaller, older casinos can get quite smoky.
