Jaisalmer जैसलमेर nicknamed The Golden city is a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located west of the state capital Jaipur. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert

There are many ways by which one can travel across the state of Rajasthan in northern India but the train is probably the most fascinating. This journey explores the history of India’s former maharajahs and mughals and begins in Delhi, India’s great capital city. The streets of Delhi are full of life and even though there is much poverty the city is currently enjoying a degree of cultural and financial prosperity. Many historic landmarks such as the Lal Qila, the Red Fort, are a reminder of the city’s glorious past. Due to its numerous magnificent historic buildings, Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is one of the most beautiful and impressive cities in the region. The facade of the city’s most famous landmark, the Palace Of The Winds, is one of the most photographed sights in India. Around forty-two kilometres west of Jaisalmer the Desert National Park helps visitors to experience the natural beauty of the remote Thar Desert. At night the inhabitants of the desert, accompanied by traditional and exotic sounds, display the oriental side of their culture. Traditional music and dance are part of the nocturnal ambience of the desert and create an evocative scene straight out of the One Thousand And One Nights. With around seven hundred thousand inhabitants Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan. The Meherangarh Museum contains an extensive collection of historic objects that once belonged to the rulers of Jodhpur. Agra is the most popular tourist destination in India. Between 1630 and 1653 Shah Jahan built a unique monument here that is one of the most famous buildings in the world, the Taj Mahal, a magnificent example of Mughal architecture that is synonymous with India itself. Historically, culturally and scenically the journey has provided many colourful impressions of Royal Rajasthan, the legendary kingdom of India’s Rajput and Mughal rulers.

Traveling India: Jaisalmer, originally a lonely remote outpost in the Thar Desert, located on the trade route to Central Asia. Jaisalmer was founded in the 12th century. The town and fort is built from golden sandstone, at sunrise and sunset the stone reflects a warm glow, a brilliant sight to see. We loved being here, exploring the desert, meeting the locals, watching the animals and Hotel Fifu was a fantastic place to spend the week relaxing. We loved Jaisalmer and would definitely return, it was a memorable experience we will never forget!

After an incredible introductory visit to India in October 2014 (we visited Kolkata), we decided to spend our Lunar New Year holiday exploring a different part of India. We flew in and out of New Delhi and also visited Agra (home of Taj Mahal!), Fatehpur Sikri (which is just a 1-1.5 hour drive by car from Agra) and three cities in Rajasthan: Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer. This video is an overview of the entire trip but we'll be uploading vlogs for each individual day of travel over the next couple weeks. Below is our trip itinerary:

pronunciation (help·info) (Rajasthani: जैसलमेर), nicknamed "The Golden City", is a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located 575 kilometres (357 mi) west from the state capital Jaipur. It was once known as Jaisalmer state. The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples are finely sculptured. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert and has a population of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District.
Jaisalmer is named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king in 1156 AD. "Jaisalmer" means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal". Jaisalmer is sometimes called the "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in every architecture of the city gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area.
District JAISALMER is located within a rectangle lying between 26°.4’ –28°.23' North parallel and 69°.20'-72°.42' east meridians. It is the largest district of Rajasthan and one of the largest in the country. The breadth (East-West) of the district is 270 km and the length (North-South) is 186 km. On the present map, district Jaisalmer is bounded on the north by Bikaner, on the west & south-west by the Pakistani border, on the south by Barmer and Jodhpur, and on the east by Jodhpur and Bikaner Districts. The length of international border attached to District JAISALMER is 471 km.

There are many ways by which one can travel across the state of Rajasthan in northern India but the train is probably the most fascinating. This journey explores the history of India’s former maharajahs and mughals and begins in Delhi, India’s great capital city. Many historic landmarks such as the Lal Qila, the Red Fort, are a reminder of the city’s glorious past. Due to its numerous magnificent historic buildings, Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is one of the most beautiful and impressive cities in the region. The facade of the city’s most famous landmark, the Palace Of The Winds, is one of the most photographed sights in India. Around forty-two kilometres west of Jaisalmer the Desert National Park helps visitors to experience the natural beauty of the remote Thar Desert. At night the inhabitants of the desert, accompanied by traditional and exotic sounds, display the oriental side of their culture. Traditional music and dance are part of the nocturnal ambience of the desert and create an evocative scene straight out of the One Thousand And One Nights. With around seven hundred thousand inhabitants Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan. The Meherangarh Museum contains an extensive collection of historic objects that once belonged to the rulers of Jodhpur. Agra is the most popular tourist destination in India. Between 1630 and 1653 Shah Jahan built a unique monument here that is one of the most famous buildings in the world, the Taj Mahal, a magnificent example of Mughal architecture that is synonymous with India itself. Traveling India: Jaisalmer, originally a lonely remote outpost in the Thar Desert, located on the trade route to Central Asia. Jaisalmer was founded in the 12th century. The town and fort is built from golden sandstone, at sunrise and sunset the stone reflects a warm glow, a brilliant sight to see. We loved being here, exploring the desert, meeting the locals, watching the animals and Hotel Fifu was a fantastic place to spend the week relaxing. We loved Jaisalmer and would definitely return, it was a memorable experience we will never forget!

In Bihar, heavy rain claims 60 lives in 48 hrs. Hot and humid weather conditions prevailed in several parts of the country on Thursday with Jaisalmer scorching at 43 degrees Celsius even as rain lashed Uttar Pradesh. It's ironical that how on the one hand the Centre is promoting electricity generation in non-conventional energy sectors while on the other, out of the 3,000 windmill units in Jaisalmer, several are forced to shut down for at least half-a-day as transmission lines have not been completed ...
