What is a diode and how does a diode work? Diodes exist in most electronic circuits if not all. It is what we call a PN junction, the simplest form of a semiconductor device. In this video I go through a brief description of how a diode is formed from silicon, the doping it goes through to give it the different properties and how a diode works in forward bias and reverse bias.
Diodes can be a PN junction diode, a zener diode, a schotty diode or even an LED. Even solar cells use the same principles as diodes. All of these work slightly different but all use the same principle of the flow of electrons and holes through a semiconductor. The more popular material used for diodes is silicon though germanium is also a material that can be used.

Diode
In electronics, a diode is a two-terminal electronic component that conducts primarily in one direction (asymmetric conductance); it has low (ideally zero) resistance to the flow of current in one direction, and high (ideally infinite) resistance in the other. A semiconductor diode, the most common type today, is a crystalline piece of semiconductor material with a p–n junction connected to two electrical terminals. A vacuum tube diode has two electrodes, a plate (anode) and a heated cathode. Semiconductor diodes were the first semiconductor electronic devices. The discovery of crystals' rectifying abilities was made by German physicist Ferdinand Braun in 1874. The first semiconductor diodes, called cat's whisker diodes, developed around 1906, were made of mineral crystals such as galena. Today, most diodes are made of silicon, but other semiconductors such as selenium or germanium are sometimes used.
Main functions
The most common function of a diode is to allow an electric current to pass in one direction (called the diode's forward direction), while blocking current in the opposite direction (the reverse direction). Thus, the diode can be viewed as an electronic version of a check valve. This unidirectional behavior is called rectification, and is used to convert alternating current to direct current, including extraction of modulation from radio signals in radio receivers—these diodes are forms of rectifiers.

What is a diode and how does a diode work? Diodes exist in most electronic circuits if not all. It is what we call a PN junction, the simplest form of a semiconductor device. In this video I go through a brief description of how a diode is formed from silicon, the doping it goes through to give it the different properties and how a diode works in forward bias and reverse bias.
Diodes can be a PN junction diode, a zener diode, a schotty diode or even an LED. Even solar cells use the same principles as diodes. All of these work slightly different but all use the same principle of the flow of electrons and holes through a semiconductor. The more popular material used for diodes is silicon though germanium is also a material that can be used.
