Peggy is a character used in ads for the Discover Card. In the ads, Peggy is a bearded man with an Eastern European accent and a moth-eaten sweater. Peggy answers the phone for "USA Prime Credit," for whom he gives evasive or unhelpful customer service. One early commercial implies he is perennially in danger of professional reprimand, which may take the form of physical discipline. He works in an unspecified frozen location, and his call center is a jumble of rubbish, outdated electronics, and stray personal effects. The weather, and some of the props (including a table-top hockey set with Cyrillic characters), might imply a location somewhere in the former Soviet Union.

The character of Peggy was created by the Martin Agency of Richmond, Virginia. He is played by actor Tudor Petrut, who was born in Romania and uses his native accent in portraying the character. Peggy has proven popular in other media, including Facebook, where he had over 47,000 fans as of January 2013. On that site, Peggy has given personal acknowledgments to several fans, up to and including voicing one fan's proposal to his girlfriend. The page's owners stopped maintaining the page in April 2013, having discontinued the character.

Ann (1797 ship)

Ann (or Anne) was built of teak in Batavia in 1797. How she came into British hands is currently unclear. In 1809 she made a voyage transporting convicts to New South Wales for the British government. On her return voyage she carried cargo for the British East India Company (EIC) from Calcutta to London. She then became a West Indiaman, trading between London and Jamaica.

Convict transport and EIC voyage (1809-1811)

Ann left Spithead on 25 August 1809, under the command of Captain Charles Clarke. She arrived at Port Jackson on 21 June. Before his departure, Clarke received a letter of marque on 21 June 1809.Ann stopped in at Rio de Janeiro around 15 November and arrived at Port Jackson on 17 or 27 February 1810.

Ann transported 200 male convicts, but unloaded two before departure. One died on the way and she landed 197 in Sydney. A detachment of the 73rd Regiment of Foot provided the guard. Among her passengers were the Reverend Samuel Marsden and the Maori chief Ruatara.

After she left Port Jackson Ann sailed for Bengal, and was at Calcutta by 21 September 1810. Homeward bound, she passed Saugor on 24 November, reached St Helena on 20 February 1811, and on 26 April was at East India Dock, in London.

Liebigs Annalen

Justus Liebig's Annalen der Chemie (often cited as just Liebigs Annalen) was one of the oldest and historically most important journals in the field of organic chemistry worldwide. It was established in 1832 and edited by Justus von Liebig with Friedrich Wöhler until Liebig's death in 1873.

In 1997 the journal merged with Recueil des Travaux Chimiques des Pays-Bas to form Liebigs Annalen/Recueil. In 1998 it was absorbed by European Journal of Organic Chemistry by merger of a number of other leading national European chemistry journals.

Wood

Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants.

It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees, or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in the roots of trees or shrubs. In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also conveys water and nutrients between the leaves, other growing tissues, and the roots. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber.

The Earth contains about 434 billion cubic meters of growing stock forest, 47% of which is commercial. As an abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 cubic kilometers of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building construction.

For the most part, the surname Wood originated as a topographic name used to describe a person who lived in, or worked in a wood or forest. This name is derived from the Middle English wode, meaning "wood" (from the Old English wudu). An early occurrence of this surname (of a personal residing near a wood) is de la Wode, recorded in Hertfordshire, England, in 1242. The locational name also appeared in early records Latinised as de Bosco (from the Old French bois, meaning "wood"). Another derivation for the surname is from a nickname of an eccentric or violent person, derived from the Old English wōd,wad, and Middle English wod, wode, all meaning "frenzied" or "wild". This derivation is considered to be much less common than the locational origin. An early occurrence of the surname derived in this fashion (from a nickname) is le Wode, recorded in Worcestershire, England, in 1221.
