THIS OLD MAN WOULD HAVE DIED had we not found and rescued his sinking soul. Forgotten by Everyone & Left for the Vultures! He lost his sweetheart 6 years ago and had no children. His land was taken from him by his brother who wished him dead. We're grateful for the opportunity to meet him and give him a touch of life. He desperately needs more help, he and thousands of old men scattered across villages in Africa who die like dogs as their properties are taken by people who wish them dead. It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers". These fleas live in the dust and dirt and take opportunity with those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives outside around warm blooded mammals and within the poorly constructed homes. It is encountered in the dust of the floors, cracks in the lower walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitarion measures, improvements in home construction and clean bedding. Jiggers are vicious and real! The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae drops out to hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering to the afflicted, interfering with sleep, causing itching and pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. As well as physical suffering, victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support. METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of qualified medical professionals. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger Infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until sufficient research reveals more improved methods. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or the surrounding Countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.
