The township of Esquimalt /ᵻˈskwaɪmɔːlt/ is a municipality at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. It is bordered to the east by the provincial capital, Victoria, to the south by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, to the west by Esquimalt Harbour and Royal Roads, to the northwest by the New Songhees IR No. 1A Indian reserve and the town of View Royal, and to the north by a narrow inlet of water called the Gorge, across which is the district municipality of Saanich. It is one of the 13 municipalities of Greater Victoria and part of the Capital Regional District.
Esquimalt had a population of 16,209 in 2011. It covers 7.08 square kilometres. It is home to the Pacific fleet of the Royal Canadian Navy.
The region now known as Esquimalt was settled by First Nations people approximately 400 years before the arrival of Europeans. The treaties of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), signed in 1843, refer to these people as the Kosampsom group, though they are now known as the Esquimalt Nation. The word Esquimalt is a transliteration of "Ess-whoy-malth," a phrase usually translated as "place of the shoaling waters." The Songhees people (then called Songish), who now have a reserve in Esquimalt, were originally located on the western shore of what is now Victoria Harbour, but were relocated in 1911. Both nations spoke a North Straits Salish dialect called Lekwungen (which is also an alternate name for the Songhees).
Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt (CFB Esquimalt) is Canada's Pacific Coast naval base and home port to Maritime Forces Pacific and Joint Task Force Pacific Headquarters.
The base occupies approximately 41 square kilometres (10,000 acres) at the southern tip of Vancouver Island on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, in and around the municipality of Esquimalt, British Columbia, adjacent to the western limit of the provincial capital, Victoria.
CFB Esquimalt comprises facilities including Naden (formerly HMCS Naden), Her Majesty's Canadian (HMC) Dockyard Esquimalt, Fleet Maintenance Facility – Cape Breton (FMF-CB), a Fire Fighting and Damage Control School, the Naval Officer Training Centre (NOTC Venture), and extensive housing including 716 personnel married quarters located at nine sites such as Belmont Park, Work Point, and Royal Roads.
The present dockyard and drydock, known as Her Majesty's Canadian (HMC) Dockyard Esquimalt, dates to the Royal Navy's Esquimalt Royal Navy Dockyard (1842–1905) and was the Royal Navy's Pacific Station until 1911; Today it serves as the Canadian Naval Headquarters in the Pacific.

The museum and bus tour at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, home of Canada's pacific fleet. I took a lot of photos at the museum a few years ago so I don't have a lot from there on this one but there's much to see in there. The bus tour was free and fun and informative. Kirby, our guide, was very knowledgeable. Cute too.

Here is a little known spot. It seems reserved for the few who know the Esquimalt, Victoria area - like me! I grew up in Victoria, until I was 8 years old and I used to play here when I was a kid. It's called Highrock Park. Or otherwise know as "High Rock Cairn" to the kids who were born in this area and played here. When you get to the summit, there is a 360 degree panoramic view of Victoria. Go see it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Bring a jacket - it's cold when it gets windy! :)
